The magelords are a formerly isolationist faction of mages who split from the Krax a while ago.  They distanced themselves from the ruined world, and spent a number of years peacefully researching obscure branches of magic.  They made significant advances in enchanting and binding, and were quite happy with their way of life.

All this came to an end when they were discovered by a band of marauders.  The mages were scholars, not battle casters.  Nearly everyone was wiped out, with any surviving spellcasters crippled and left for dead in the smoldering remains of their conclave.  With one exception, Boris the Blade, a rather adventurous soul.

At the time of the attack, Boris was exploring the nearby lands... an activity his elders frowned upon. When he returned to the ruins of his former home, he gathered all survivors, and led them to a spot he had found near a river.

Play-through (Turns 1 - ??)

The spot Boris chose for his new nation

Turn 1:  As the band of refugees neared the spot Boris had located, a pack of wolves attacked them. Boris was the only one in a state to fight and even he was surprised.  He did not have a chance to bring any of his enchantments up.  The wolves surrounded him, and managed to inflict quite a few grievous wounds.  All of a sudden, as his Krax blood flowed over his clothes, he felt himself becoming nearly impervious to the wolves teeth, and managed to dispatch them with his rusty short sword.

Unfortunately, the fight left Boris in no better shape than the rest of his companions.  After skinning the wolves the group barely made it to the spot Boris had chosen for the new conclave.  The refugees erected a makeshift fence around their camp as well as their wounds allowed them, and collapsed where they stood.  Boris was the only one who knew that the Magelords could not afford to rest.  He managed to trade the wolf skins for a few extra Gildars, and headed towards a tent he had spotted about a mile from the camp.

As he approached the tent, he was hailed by an Ironeer woman.  She introduced herself as Hannis, and appeared interested in aligning herself with the Magelords cause.  She was not willing to do so for less than 131 Gildars, but Boris did not feel he had much of a choice, beat up as he was.

The deal left him wondering how he would pay her salary, but Hannis soon proved that she was worth every Gildar.  She left the tired Boris behind, and headed towards the nearby remains of a long abandoned caravan.  It must have been quite the caravan, in its day.  The remains were strewn over three square miles.  Hannis had time to check only two of the most promising locations. She found a fending blade, and a dragon cloak.

Meanwhile, Boris was busy organizing the refugees' camp into a functioning community.  The first thing he did was to give the camp the lofty name of "New Conclave" and abolish all taxes.  None of the other mages were in a state to go out and adventure, but they were all perfectly happy to focus their efforts into researching some practical applications of magic. Boris used the "Inspiration" enchantment to speed up their efforts, but he was still told that it would take more than two years to learn how to harvest elemental shards.

He got pretty much the same estimate from the people whom he had tasked to build a workshop. He considered making enchanted hammers for them, but decided that his mana would be better used for a "Regeneration" spell to speed up his recovery.

The Magelords' corner of the world

Turns 2-9

Once he assigned a task to everyone in New Conclave, Boris set out to catch up with Hannis.  On his way, he searched the last area with caravan debris, but he only came up with some salted pork.

This was enough to convince him that he should leave looting to Hannis, and concentrate on the more violent aspects of exploration.  Once he caught up with Hannis, she was only too happy to give him the cloak and the blade, and agree to let him take care of all fighting.

Soon enough, they both proved to be quite good at their assigned tasks.  Hannis found a sharp dagger in a beast's carcass, while Boris dispatched another wolf pack and a darkling lurker.  In the latter fight, he was careful to allow his "Regeneration" to seal all of his wounds before he finished off the enemy.  All this fighting seemed to improve him, and he felt even better about his potential.

Near the darkling camp, Boris met Leadanna, a traveling Mancer merchant.  Unfortunately, she requested 134 Gildars for her services, which Boris was nowhere close to having.

Hannis focused on exploring the lands north of New Conclave, but found nothing but dead woods haunted by a number of fearsome cave bears.

Boris kept heading southwest until the reached the ruins of his old home.  From there, he tracked the brigands who had killed his friends.  After dispatching the raiding party and the group guarding their lair, he found a leather cap that fit him.  The experience made him stronger.

In the north, Hannis found a dark wizard's tower surrounded by a number of dangerous creatures. She spotted a forest drake, some cave bears, an army of brigands, as well as the Imperial hero Kulan and his tame mire skaths.  But Hannis was a master scout, and managed to sneak past all the dangers and even retrieve an ice staff from a treasure chest.  She also noticed two elemental shards, a library's ruins and a old battlefield.

With great danger come great rewards

Turn 10: In the Summer of 161, the researchers in New Conclave finally figured out how to exploit elemental shards.  Hannis had a great place in mind for an arcane monolith, but the mana reserves were insufficient at that moment.  Instead she searched the lost library and uncovered a treasure trove of information on Civics, which would make running and expanding the Magelords' fledgling city much easier.  The news seemed to attract more people to New Conclave, and the city council decided that Agricultural improvements should be the researchers new priority.

Warlord Verga and his pioneers invade the Magelords' lands

Turn 11-12: New Conclave finished building the workshop complex.  Immediately a group of hardworking citizen began constructing tools with which to erect an outpost north of the city, where Hannis and Boris had found an elemental shard and a hive of twilight bees.

Hannis got news of their project and tried not to smirk at their efforts as, with a few motions of her hands, she summoned an arcane monolith into existence.  It would do just a good job at exploiting the two shards near the dark tower as any outpost constructed by mundane means.

Hannis tried not to think of the fact that she had completely drained her nation's mana reserves, and that, until the two shrines were completed, the Magelords would be starved for magical energy.  Instead decided to check whether the old battlefield concealed anything of interest.  She was very happy when she found a pair of long stride boots, and considerably less happy when she discovered an outpost flying Ythril's colors further east.

Soon enough, Warlord Verga himself made an appearance, leading a group of pioneers toward New Conclave.  It was clear that the Empire of Ythril meant to invade the lands near New Conclave, and attempt to stifle the fledgling nation.  War was only a matter of time.  Unfortunately, Boris was rather far away, circling the mountains south of New Conclave.

He's only asking for a thousand times as much money as we have

Turn 13-16: Uppermost in Hannis's mind was to get the long stride boots to Boris, so that he could move faster and attempt to prepare for the inevitable war with Ythril.  She managed to cross the lands surveyed by the Ythril outpost without being noticed.

As soon as their tools were ready, the pioneers built an outpost north of New Enclave, and then decided to erect a shrine over the air shard and domesticate the twilight bees nearby.  The outpost also surveyed a crystal crag, but the Magelords were running out of cash, and decided to delay developing that resource until later.  Their labor in New Conclave was instead directed toward the construction of a tower which would serve as a symbol of the Magelords' dominion.

Boris had just found a midnight stone in the lair of a darkling lurker when he received a message from Yithril.  Warlord Verga insulted the Magelords' nation, and demanded 3200 Gildars as tribute.  The sum was of course preposterous.  Boris had two Gidlars chasing each other in his pockets, and no intention whatsoever of letting himself be extorted by a fallen beast.  He refused, and rushed toward the border.

Meanwhile, Harris was doing some rushing on her own.  Using her superior speed, she managed to loot the camps of a darkling and some bandits before Verga could do it.  Given that he probably had cleared them himself, her actions probably did not do anything to improve his feelings towards the Magelords.  In any case, the camps provided her with a pair leather vambraces, and another midnight stone.

Turin had an enviable capacity for absorbing damage

Turns 17-20: Hannis finally reached Boris, and gave him the vambraces, the boots and useless gear loot she had gathered in her exploration.  She then headed toward Yithril, while he set North, to destroy the lairs that she had spotted and marked on her map.

On his way North, Boris stopped at New Conclave to sell the wolf skins and the loot that he did not need.  Had it not been for that, he would have not been able to pay Hannis the following season.  While he was there, Boris used the opening ceremony for the tower of dominion to gather volunteers for a new squad of settlers tasked to prevent Yithril from settling too close to the city.

But Boris could not afford to rest in the city.  Warlord Verga was approaching the camp of the Imperial hero Turin Mafaru, who could not be allowed to join the enemy.  Unfortunately, Boris did not have the mana to turn his skin to stone, as he had wished to do before he started fighting stronger opponents, so he took on Turin with no other enchantment but "Regeneration".

Turin's capacity to absorb damage was enviable, and despite Boris's superior swordsmanship and equipment, the battle was going poorly.  Once again, Boris was saved by his Krax blood.  As it flowed over his clothes, it hardened to the point where Turin's spear barely did any damage.  Eventually, Boris dealt the final blow, and there was one less recruit for Verga's horde.

Immediately afterwards, Boris attacked an defeated a troll.  A few times, it looked as if the troll would be victorious, but Boris was so much faster that he could run around the meadow in which the fight was taking place, and regenerate his wounds.  Of course, so did the troll, but eventually Boris's blade found the troll's heart.  The experience from the fight convinced Boris that his way of fighting would be best served if he followed the Path of the Assassin.

In comparison, New Conclave is a hamlet

Turns 21-22: Verga must have been close enough to observe Boris's fights, because it turned around and headed back to its own lands.  Clearly the trog must have been a coward, for all its posturing.

Emboldened, Hannis entered its teritory, intent on scouting the future enemy's resources.

Meanwhile the Magelords rediscovered the secrets of Agriculture, and thus pushed back the fear of food shortages in New Conclave.  Eager to attract more people to their cause, they started figuring out the intricacies of effective Administration.

The squad of pioneers finished training, and headed south.  New Conclave began the construction of an inn with which to attacts even more people.

Boris found a simple wooden shield in the troll's lair.  He then entered the woods North of New Conclave in search of cave bears.  As soon as he spotted one, he turned his skin to stone, and attacked.  He barely made it.  His Krax blood, his equipment, and his enchantments kept the bear's claws from more than drawing blood. Even so, bringing the bear down took forever, and even scratches can kill a warrior, eventually.

Nevertheless, the fight was worth it.  In the bear den, Boris found an amulet of Frost.  His celebratory mood lasted barely a moment, because he received a report from Hannis.

Hannis had found the capital city of Yithril, and had been shocked by its size and population.  New Conclave had seemed really tiny in comparison.   She had visited the marketplace, and found horses, wargs, chainmail armor and burning axes.  And to really drive the point home, she had overheard a rumor that the Kindom of Altar had constructed the Merchantcross Bazzar, which had made her realize that Yithril was not even the most powerful enemy the Magelords must face.

Boris knew that the reports of Yithril's power would dismay the population of New Conclave.  He decided that he needed to address the nation, and show them that there was a way out of the situation.  He started to write his first "State of New Conclave" speech.

Out of character comments on the first turn.

Wow.  I do not know whether this is a consequence of insane difficulty, but both my attempted starts were weird.  The first time, I had NO tiles to settle on.  An AI must have settled within 6 tiles, or the starting position generator is messed up.  I have a save to prove it.

The second time, I was attacked by wolves before I got control of my character.  Thus him fighting without any buffs.  On the plus side, his Krax blood and armorer profession gave him 15 armor once he dropped below 50% hps.  On the minus side, if the fortify ability worked, I failed to see it.  He did not dodge even once.

And speaking again of the random generator - there were three abandoned caravan locations next to each other.  Not that I am complaining, but seriously, it must have been quite the caravan.

I think the devs should make it so that monsters don't get a turn in the first season.  Too many times the AI or human has been attacked before even being able to put down a city!  Having the monsters skipping the first turn would be a simple fix that would make a huge difference, in my opinion.

Or just adjust the turn order to be Human, AI, Monsters, rather than Monsters, Human, AI.

As to not seeing any tiles to settle on, that's probably the result of devs taking out sub-par tiles.  So if you start in an area that would otherwise be overrun with 3/2 tiles, you'll see a vast expanse of tiles unable to get settled.  Not the best way to fix the problem IMO.

Actually, the current order is Monsters, AI, Human.  I agree that it would be better to have Human, AI, Monsters.

Tuidjy, can you show me what your custom factions/sovs for Capitar and Umber looked like (stats, traits etc)?  Also did you use fast pacing?

Best regards,
Steven.

2-9) Until I found that treasure trove in the North, the landscape was pretty bare, and strangely boring.  Four cave bears, which at this difficulty have 111 hps each, and three brigand lairs.  I'm starting to realize that I may have real problems leveling my character, and that taking Potential instead of Adventurer's boon may have been a mistake.  Both Strength and Potential I are long term traits, and I may end up VERY pressed short term.

10-16) Fortify tile is definitely not working.  The dodge bonus should be noticable, and I have not seen a trace of it.  Also, I think that there's something wrong with the AI's looting camps it has cleared, as I managed to loot two camps next to Verga, in one turn.  One may have meant that he ran out of moves.  Two is suspicious.

By the way, I got an ultimatum on turn 16, by a warlord with 150hps to Boris's 27hps. Furthermore, he managed to clear quite a few of the monsters I hoped to level on.  This play-through may be coming to a quick end very soon.

StevenAus, the custom sovereigns are as follow:

Lena the Light: Brilliant but Clumsy. Apprentice of Life and Air, disciple of Fire and Earth.

Urko the Mighty: Brilliant, disciplined, hardy and cruel.  Apprentice of Death and Air, disciple of Earth.

They are both sovereigns that I have played to win on Ridiculous.  They may not be what the AI will play best... but we'll see.  Urko will be a powerhouse with the x5 hp bonus.

The State of New Conclave (Winter of 164)

Citizens of New Conclave!

You have heard, by now, that a tribe of Fallen, led by Warlord Verga, lives to the Northeast of our city.  They have been encroaching into our lands, they have tried to extort us, and they have threatened us with war.  It is true that their capital Ahilga is larger than our city, and that the filthy beasts breed like rabbits.  It is true that Verga is a huge monstrosity and that we would have a hard time to bring it down.  It is true that their miserable hovels seem to be blocking the only way out of the peninsula on which we live.

But we have one huge advantage over the Fallen beasts!  They are lazy and cowardly, and their minds are sluggish.  They failed to back their threats with force, and Verga slunk home with its tail between its legs.  The brave Ironeer Hannis has, at great danger to herself, managed to sneak through Ahilga, and is currently watching their far border.  With our superior magic, we will shut the animals in their pen, and starve them to death!  When they start eating each other, we will offer them our wise leadership, and they will strange Verga themselves.

The future belongs to us!  Our blood is pure, our minds are sharp, and our hearts know no fear!  Magelords forever!

Play-through (Turn 23-39)

Boris is getting very skilled at killing bears.

Turns 23-26: Someone must have noticed Hannis in the market, because she was ordered to get out.  Still dazed by Yithril's power, she complied, and was escorted to the border.  When she came to her senses, she realized that she had been taken to the East border of the Empire, and was now very far from home.  But master explorer as she was, she took that in stride, and proceeded to do what she did best, namely scavenge 30 Gildars from an empty darkling's camp.

The pioneers built an outpost near the wild twilight bees South of New Conclave, then settled gathering honey.

Boris took out another bear, and found another amulet of Frost.  He was not surprised to find himself becoming better at dodging, given that getting out of the way was the only way of surviving a bear's assault.  One the other hand, he was quite surprised to spot a friendly grave elemental emerging from an Earth shrine and heading towards him.  Boris decided that with the help of the elemental, he may be able to take on a dark wizard.  To prepare for the fight, he attacked a bandit camp, making sure to let his "Regeneration" fully heal him before he dispatched the last bandit.

Hannis found a pair of naja skin gauntlets in the remains of a slain beast, then decided that she was tired of just sneaking around, and attacked a wildling archer who for some reason had decided to camp inside an old library.  Once she started fighting she found she enjoyed it, and took out some bandits, acquiring a new pair of leather boots in the process.

Monoliths can certainly be used offensively

Turn 27-29: Between the improvements in Administration, the new inn, and the prestige gained from Boris's victories, New Conclave growth nearly doubled... to about a fifth of that of Ahilga.  It was clear that the Magelords could not hope to outproduce Yithril, so Boris ordered the researchers to concentrate of warfare, namely on domesticating horses.  To attract new talent, he commissioned a mansion for the best sage of New Conclave.  As for himself, he continued to train the only way he knew, by exterminating the pests that infested the Magelords' homelands.

After throwing a dark wizard off his tower, Boris found an obsidian shield  which seemed to be particularly good at deflecting magic.  Then, with the help of his grave elemental, he killed yet another bear, and got even better at dodging.  There was a shield in the bear's lair, but it was much inferior to the obsidian one.

Once her "Regeneration" went up, Hannis had absolutely no difficulty clearing a bandit camp.  There she found a summoning token, and used it at once to summon a wolf she named Custos.  Then she erected a monolith surveying two shards and an iron deposit right on Yithril's border.  To insure the monolith's safety, she destroyed two more groups of brigands.  As she fought, she felt her power grow and resolved to fully develop her potential.

A crow demon emerged from the shrine near New Conclave and flew to Ahilga's walls to observe the activities of the Yithril.

The Magelords' peninsula

Turns 30-32: Killing the bear allowed Boris to go around the mountains.  He had barely emerged from the narrow passage, when a Capitar scout handed him a message from Lena the Light.  He was not surprised to find out that this kingdom was also more powerful than the Magelords.  When he offered a non-aggression pact, Lena tried to extort hundreds of Gildars that Boris did not have.  After watching Capitar recruit Janusk, a merchant he would loved to employ, Boris swore vengence, and instructed the grave elemental to deny Capitar access to the Magelords' lands.

Hannis rushed to block Verga and his pioneer from circling the new monolith to the West.  Custos was sent to do the same to the East, and discovered a new road that curved to the South.  She was tempted to follow it, and learn who was trading with Yithril, but decided that containing the Yithril pioneers was more important.  Once Hannis and Custos were in position, Boris had all would-be colonists escorted back to their lands.

Custos followed the road South, and found a Magnar outpost - another hostile empire on the Magelords' doorstep.  Immediately the wolf found a narrow land-bridge and started snarling at any Magnar pioneers that came close.

If anyone ever settles here, it will be the Magelords

Turns 33-35: Boris headed East with the intent to destroy the number of shrill lairs threatening the shard shrines at the Yithril border.  On the way, he destroyed three or four groups of mites.  When he was halfway to the first shrill lair, he understood why Yithril was trying so hard to send pioneers West.  There was a patch of arable land between the two Magelords monoliths, which meant that Hannis had to stay in one place, blocking any Yithril pioneers from founding a new Fallen city.

Custos patrolled the road between Yithril and Magnar, interfering with the movement of scouts and outright stopping any pioneers.

The crow demon near Ahilga kept sending messages about the prestigious buildings built by the Empire of Magnar and the Kingdom of Altar - Vaults, Mills, Forges... At some point, Boris got tired of bad news, and dispatched the crow demon to look for Leadanna, the Mancer whom he had met West of New Conclave, years ago.  The demon found her, and she accepted 134 Gildar to join the Magelords' cause.  While physically weak, she earned enough as merchant to pay both her own and Hannis's salaries.

Eventually, Boris accumulated enough mana to erect a monolith near the arable land, and prevent Yithril from settling the spot.  This freed Hannis to search a couple of lost libraries that Custos had spotted.

Boris the Blade, dodger extraordinaire

Turn 36-39: In the first library, Hannis found a treatise on horse husbandry.  It was enough to allow the scholars in New Conclave to move on their next project, namely industrial mining and smelting.  Amazingly enough, that project, too, was helped by some materials Hannis found in the second library.

On his way to the shrills' lairs, Boris dispatched a darkling shaman, but did not bother looting his camp.  He left that to Hannis.  In the first lair, he found a strong healing potion, in the second, some adept robes.  All that fighting was good training, but he realized that there were no other monsters nearby.  He could not hope to improve in the near future.

As if to underscore Boris's concerns about his neighbors, combined Capitar and Yithril construction crews ran a road between the two nations' capitals... and did so right through Magelord territory, passing less than a mile from New Conclave!  Boris decided to take a break from adventuring and address the nation again.

Out of character comments for turns 23-39.

At this point, there's no way for Boris to gain experience, and for the Magelords to compete without taking out Yithril.  I will wait until all Life shrines come on-line (for the Regeneration boost), and attempt a straight assault on their city.  If Boris cannot do it, the game is lost.

The random number generator is screwed up.  Boris got three amulets of Frost and four shields, there were too many lost libraries to count next to each other, and he has been getting dodging all the time, but no chance to get any Life path for Heal or Shrink.

I have learned quite a few things about playing on Insane.  First, the enemy HP is so high, that unless you can win a fight without losing HP at all, you better not bother.  Boris achieves this with high initiative and running around healing when he gets beaten up too much.  At the end of most fights, I have him ignore the last opponent until his HP is maxed.

Further, this is not an optimal race for Insane.  Master scout, Life magic, Enchanters are absolutely necessary.  Binding is so/so. The elementals make no difference in fighting (HP too low), but are useful as scouts and especially to block neutral AIs movement. Scholars are useless.  The AI gets x4 population growth AND x4 research/construction, which means that there is no way to compete except through force of arms.

Finally quests and heroes get grabbed before I can reach them.  Capitar has been taking them all.  Had I know, I could have used the grave elementals to sit on the quests... but I play with no restores rules in this game.

Anyway.  I hope someone is reading this.  If not, it's still a thread where I can point people when I want to argue a point in another thread.

Yeah, I've discovered just how hard a map with 10 Insane AIs on it is.  I've played at least 4 games right through to the end, and all the times I have been beaten when a massively superior force assaulted my only city.  If you are lucky with the town battle and have saved your mana and have the right units and spells, you might just be able to win it.  But I haven't really got past the first big battle yet, except one game where I beat a powerful force (the first, not the second) by kiting a powerful slowed unit that was affected by poison.  I haven't yet tried what happens when you build more than one city, might make it easier, might make it harder.

I always read your AARs, Tujidy.  Seeing what the game is like on the much harder difficulties is interesting, and I like the narrative you're crafting for your kingdom.

The State of New Conclave (Winter of 168)

Citizens of New Conclave!

We can no longer ignore the Yithril beasts from the North!  When the cowards realized that we will not succumb to their extorsion, when their efforts to corral us on this peninsula failed, they appealed to Magnar's base nature and to Capitar's mercenary instincts.

We have all seen the road Capitar built near our city - a road that will allow Yithril's hordes a quick way into our lands.  Our scouts have followed that road past Ahilga, and it leads straight into Magnar's territory, to better allow those burning monsters to support their cowardly brethren.

How long shall we tolerate the Fallens presence at our gates?  Should we wait for them to out-breed and overwhelm us?  Must we wake up one night to the cries of our children being slaughtered by the Yithril?

No!  We must strike now, and show these Fallen beasts they cannot afford to threaten pure Men!

Messengers have been sent to Capitar.  Our best diplomats will appeal to their greed, and persuade them to remain neutral in this fight.  I, myself, will attack Ahilga, and attempt to leave Warlord Verga and its army stranded, and without a home base.

Victory or Death!  Magelords forever!

Play-through (Turns 40 - 46)

Boris, before the assault on Ahilga

Turns 40-41:  The scholars in New Conclave made great advances in mining and smelting, and started focusing their research on new methods of construction.  No results could possibly come in time to aid the war effort, but they would be instrumental in speeding up the development of the Magelord capital... if Boris's assault on Ahilga happened to succeed.

Boris supervised the final preparations for war.  By the Fall of 169, the third Life shrine would be finished, and that was his target date for the assault on Ahilga.

Custos rushed through a patch of Magnar lands, and continued Southwest.  Following the trade road, she passed an outpost flying Gildar's colors, and soon ended at the wall of the capital of Resoln.  Unfortunately, Hagudst bared further progress, and Custos had to turn back.

Meanwhile, Magelord diplomats met with Lena the Light, and demanded to know why Capitar had constructed a road from New Conclave to Yithril.  Lena was polite and friendly.  It appeared that she had finally realized that Magnar and Yithril were a threat to her own kingdom.  She blamed the construction of the offending road on greedy Fallen sympathizers, and promised that Capitar would be firmly on the Magelord side in the upcoming conflict.  She did not go as far as to promise military assistance, but she did offer 222 Gildars for the war effort.

Boris accepted the money, and true to his word, declared war on Yithril.  Immediately afterward, he purchased a horse, and attacked a throng of Yithril pioneers led by the Urxen Annia.  Annia had a burning battleaxe, but between his Dragon and Nature's cloak, Boris did not care.  The battle still lasted a long time, because Annia managed to cast "Gift of Iron", which armored her minions.

While Boris was striking the first blow against Yithril, Hannis was keeping just out of Verga's reach, hoping to make it chase her around.  As for Leadanna, she was traveling toward Capitar collecting an army of elementals spawned by the Magelords shrines.

The battle of Ahilga

Turns 42-43: Warlord Verga and his two henchmen clearly did not have the courage to face Hannis, and chose to destroy a nearby Earth shrine instead.  This weakened Boris's "Stone skin" but he had no choice to proceed with the attack.  He remembered to take down and recast his Regeneration spell so that it could benefit from the recently built Life shrine.

The battle for Ahilga was grueling, but at no time was the outcome in doubt.  Boris immediately cast "Haste", and killed Annia before she could get a single spell off.  The defending militia's maces were mostly missing him, but when they landed, they inflicted heavy damage.  This wasn't much of a problem, though, because every time it happened, Boris would ride around the Fallen,  regenerating and picking out those who strayed from their comrades.  The archers were not a threat, as more often than not their arrows bounced off.  Once healed, Boris would charge, and kill a number of defenders before he had to retreat again.  All the riding around was good exercise, and when the last defender fell, Boris that he becoming even better at learning from his experience.

More than a hundred of the citizens of Ahilga chose to remain in the city, and accept Boris as their leader.  Unfortunately, even among those Fallen the unrest was high, and the two shrines adjacent to the city had been destroyed.  According to the city council, they would take five years each to rebuild, but it could not be helped, short of razing the city to the ground, and Boris felt he had done enough killing for the moment.  He even offered Venga surrender terms, which, somewhat to his surprise, it accepted.

Boris was gracious in victory.  He allowed Verga to retain his axe, and even gave him some friendly advice about what armor would work best.  He did ask the Warlord to relinquish his title, but also granted all Torgs citizen privileges, and forbid anyone from referring to one as 'it'.  These actions significantly increased the Magelords prestige amongst the nations of the world.

Hannis searched the camp of the warlock killed earlier by Boris, and found a staff of the furnace.  She then purchased a horse, and headed East, because it was clear to everyone that Magnar was upset by the loss of his ally, and likely to create trouble.

Custos traveled along an unclaimed strip of land between Magnar and Gilden, and caught a glimpse of Emperor Magnar itself.  It had an incomplete set of leather armor and a rather poor staff.

Leadanna found an axe in a monster's corpse, then killed a group of bandits and kept one of their sharp daggers.  She then started to follow a road to the North, scouting the Capitar buildings along it.

With friends like these...

Turns 44-46: Boris headed East, but soon reached the Magnar border.  The Empire had expanded to fully block all travel East, and some of their outposts were pushing back the Magelord dominion.  Even one year of peace looked unlikely at that point.

Hannis and Verga joined forces, traded equipment, and headed East.  Hannis was wondering whether Verga would actually fight against his former allies, but leaving him in the rear with Boris and Hannis facing the Magnar would have been a recipe for disaster.

Leadanna was adventuring on the edges of Capitar, killing bandits and ogres, and acquiring some decent gear - a pair of naja gaultlets, a darkling cloak... Sometimes, her travels would take her into Capitar territory, and she could not resist to check the markets.  She could only dream of the gear on display - battle wargs, plate worthy of any champion, magical weapons of the highest grade.  Of course, everything was priced out of her reach.

Two arcane monoliths were erected, and the construction of three monuments began, but unfortunately, the construction times were extremely high, because all workers had to come from Ahilga and the Torgs had not quite accepted their new leadership.  Thus, the Magelords decided to found a new settlement city North of Ahilga, and draw workers from there.

One of the crow demons reached the edges of the Northern Wastes, but had to flee from a mob of ice wargs.  Almost at the same time, threatening messages arrived from Capitar and Gilden, asking for thousands of Gildars in tribute.

The Magelords were once again corralled in their little corner of the world, surrounded by enemies.  Boris knew that stagnation would doom them, and that further expansion would have to be through force of arms.  He took a roll of parchment, and started composing another address to the nation.

Once again, the Magelords have no choice but fight to expand.  This time, the Magnar are nowhere as well scouted as the Yithril were, and they have Boreal blades and chainmail, at the very least.  Still, nothing else will work.  Boris is of course the only unit that can actually do anything.  Hannis, Verga and their elementals can trash outposts and kill pioneers, but that's about it.

There is a big problem with all new outposts defaulting to the former Yithril city.  Because of the high unrest, the new shrines will not be on-line until 16-20 turns from now, i.e. no boost in spell power will be coming any time soon. There should be a way to set which city is being 'fed' by an outpost.  Maybe by having outposts being linked to wherever the pioneers came from, which would give built outposts an advantage over monoliths (which would default to the closest)

The extortion by the AI is ridiculous.  What purpose is served by them asking for 4K?  If they had at least declared war, it would not look so ridiculous.  Not that I could survive if everyone who has asked for tribute declared war.

By the way, monsters DEFINITELY do not attack AI pioneers, and the AI definitely is not looting properly.  It seems that one champion clears the lairs, and then another champion has to loot it.

And of course, the other AIs are growing like crazy - Magnar is over 2000, which is kind of silly.  They may be strong, but they are not 20 times stronger than the Magelords.

Address to the Confederacy (Fall of 170)

Fellow Citizens!

The Confederacy is in dire peril!  The Empire of Magnar refuses to allow us out of our peninsula, spreads all over the known lands, and grows in power faster than all Kingdoms combined.  The militaristic Quendar have been equipping their champions for war, and raising troops our scholars cannot hope to match.  They hate us and look at us as the easiest target for their Imperial ambitions.

What about our fellow Kingdoms, you ask?  Oh, they are ready to accept our tribute, and leave us unmolested... they just each ask for about a thousand times our yearly income.  Each.  Even Capitar consider us warmongers, despite being the ones who financed our campaign against Yithril and insisted that we declare war.

We cannot count on anyone but ourselves.  If we wait, we will be swamped by our hostile neighbors, when they decide they have the force of arms to back up their insulting extortion.  There are only two paths open to us.  We can either surrender our sovereignty and pay tribute to a greedy Kingdom, or we can per-emptively destroy our most aggressive Empire neighbors one by one.

What are our chances of success?  Slim.  But I would rather die free than live in servitude!  Most of you have joined our confederacy because you have heard of my struggle for the common good.  I always lead from the front, and I am bound to be the first to fall if our strength proves inadequate.  Once I'm gone, you can choose another leader... But as long as I live, the Magelords will not kneel to anyone.

Death to Magnar!  Magelords forever!

Play-through (Turns 47-53)

One by one, the enemies fall

Turns 47-49: Lady Irana of Tarth hated the Magelords, but was a lot more afraid of Magnar.  She sent 35 Gildar to Boris, asking the Magelords to declare war on the Quendar.  The amount was an insult, but Boris was already so angry at the world that it made no difference.  He declared war, and headed towards Curgen's Hold.  He was going to start at one end of the Magnar Empire and either die, or come out at the other end.

First he rode down the defenders of Curgen's Hold.  Next, on the road to Imperium, he met the Karx champion Klavarra and showed her that agility and regeneration can overcome brute strength and magical equipment.  During the fight, he felt that he was getting even better at learning from his experience.  Then, he engaged an army, which included the champions Sulowa, Nochd and Ruka.  When the dust settled, he was the only one standing, and felt that with all the dodging and weaving he had done, he could have as well be an acrobat.

Meanwhile, Verga and Hannis were adventuring in Gilden's lands - killing bears and bandits, harassing Magnar's caravans and hiding from Lord Markin's watchmen who kept escorting them to the border.  Still, these expeditions did a lot for the party equipment.  Leadanna was doing exactly the same, but in Capitar's lands.

Conquest was not the only way the Confederacy was growing.  The city of Northbay was founded on the north tip of the Magelord Peninsula, across from the Kingdom of Capitar.  This city was meant to provide workers for developing newly acquired resources, as not to rely on the rioting Torgs or Quendar.

If only the city could have retained its income after falling into Magelord hands

Turns 50-51: The Magelord scholars concluded their research on new construction methods and began perfecting Trading practices.  Their research was aided by ancient manuscripts discovered in lost libraries by both Verga and Leadanna's parties.

Boris assaulted Imperium, and was nearly overwhelmed by defenders' numbers.  Twice he was cornered and barely managed to force his ways through the enemy lines.  He had long ago realized that his mobility was the only thing keeping him alive, and wondered how he would manage against numerous mounted troops.  But no one in Imperium was mounted, and after a long fight, the Magnar capital fell to the Magelords.

The wounds received and healed during the fight improved Boris's ability to absorb damage, and the time he spent hasted advanced his understanding of Air Magic.  Boris was becoming a powerful champion, the like of such had not been since the times of the titans.

Imperium was quite the prize.  It was home to the Treasury Vault and the Iron Works, and despite the unrest, showed a lot of production potential.  Boris personally guaranteed that Imperium would remain a manufacturing center, and even authorized another major project - the Great Mill.  The construction would take forever, but he figured it would keep the Iron Workers Guild happy and too busy to plot a rebellion.

Meanwhile, Magnar was chasing Custos in the woods south of Imperium.  The wolf could have easily ran away, and Boris could have easily defeated the would be Emperor but they decided that it was best to keep Magnar chasing shadows while Boris took over the last Magnar city.  On the way there, he noticed a forest drake that was ravaging Gilden's countryside, but decided that we would take care of Magnar first.

The rest of the Magelords were not sitting idle. Leadanna's party was slowing making her way to the Northern Wastes.  The crow demon who was scouting ahead of her actually made it through the wastes, and into the ancient battlefield of the Titans.  It was not clear whether her elementals could handle any of the beasts found there, but at least she would map the area.

Verga's party was doing a great job pacifying the former Magnar lands, and all the fighting was shaping Hannis into a fearsome Warrior.

But the most unexpected victory was won by a crow demon exploring the Magnar-Resoln border.  It was attacked by the champion Vasim, and managed to defeat him by a combination of Thunderstrikes and superior mobility.

The Magelords are lucky that more of these had not been built

Turn 52-53: As soon a new set of Trading laws were in place, a road network began developing between the Magelords cities.  The scholars in New Conclave were well aware that the confederacy had a majority of Fallen citizens and focused their effort on Cooperation.

Boris assaulted Khaffara, the last Magnar city.  Every champion defeated in the last year had been recuperating there, and took arms.  But they were not what impressed Boris the most.  A single unit of seven Quendar Defenders had been trained and equipped in time for the last stand.  They wore full champion plate, and held Boreal blades.  It was clear to Boris that he had taken on the Magnar Empire at the last moment when victory had still been a possibility... it also realized he may need a new strategy for the next war.  But first, he had to end the current one.

Despite the powerful Quendar troops, Boris prevailed.  As a matter of fact, the hardest part was to get through the Defenders armor.  He spent so long hammering on their plate, he had the time to work out a few Air spells.  Having reduced the last Magnar stronghold, Boris joined Verga's party in pacifying the former Magnar lands.

One by one, he took down a group of umberdroths, an Earth elemental's army and a forest drake. They were no match for him.  As a matter of fact, he did such a quick job of them, he felt himself growing faster and faster.   In the umberdroth lair, he found a ghost shield that he gave to
Hannis.  She was not powerful enough to use it yet, but she and Verga were adventuring together, and were slowly but surely getting better at it.

A report that Magnar had just destroyed an iron mine reminded Boris that there was a war going on.  He immediately asked for Magnar's unconditional surrender, and received it.

Still, Boris knew he could not relax.  All neighbors hated the Confederacy.  They had all insulted, threatened and tried to extort the Magelords, and were only then realizing that they may have to pay the price for their arrogance.

Boris remembered every single insult.  Seething with cold anger, he started writing his next speech.

Everyone is seeing the writing on the wall. Let us hope it's too late for them

Boris has become more or less unstoppable.  Of course, there is only one of him, so it's very important to get to Air IV so that he can cloud walk.

The magelords have grabbed enough land and resources to be competitive, but the high unrest in their captured cities is making exploiting any resources very, very slow.  On the other hand, razing the cities is a recipe for disaster.  Without a good power ranking, it is very likely that all those hostile nations will declare war.

War is, as usual, inevitable.  I will try to take out Resoln quickly, before all the Kingdoms get around to declaring war.  I assume that it will not take them long.  I would sign a non-aggression pact with Tarth, but they would not talk to me.  By the time they do, it is very likely that they would have outpaced the Magelords, and will ask for too much money for the pact.

I keep encountering bugs.  One of the most annoying is the one where shrines have to be rebuilt when they are taken over, and when a city grows to touch them.

I'm curious whether I could switch to a peacful strategy, but I doubt it.

Just an observation - to me it looks like only Magnar is set at an insane AI. The others look like they're at default.

How is it possible to have an attack 13 in the Winter of 164, but then when you killed the cave bear, less than 3 turns later, your attack listing is 215?

To Frogboy:  It's possible, though unlikely.  Yithril & Magnar were definitely Insane, because they had the x5 hp and x4 population/research/production.  You can see that on some of the screenshots (Verga invades the homelands, New Conclave is a hamlet)  As for the rest, with Resoln's capital at 509 population on turn ~50, I do not think they are at default either.  In any case, I cannot check until the end of the weekend, but I will post a screengrab of the save file info then.

To Winnihym: The 215 is not his damage, accuracy or attack.  Judging from that screenshot and the battle recaps from turns 47-49, it seems that the number is the damage dealt times two.  Why times two, I do not know.

Yes, all the AIs are insane. At least, the tooltip on the save game file thinks so.

May I ask why you thought that the other AIs were on the default setting, Frogboy?

Address to the Confederacy (Summer of 172)

Citizens of the Confederacy!

I know that most of you are celebrating the end of the Magnar campaign, and wish for a long period of peace.  I know that some argue that we have dealt with the immediate threats, and that our neighbors have learned to respect us.  I know that many think that we should go back to the days where all the Magelords had to worry was their research.

I disagree.

All our neighbors believe that their nations are stronger than ours.  In a few seasons, they will colonize the minuscule strips of land still left between their borders, and look for new ways to expand.  In their infinite arrogance, they will reach for our lands.

I cannot stress this strongly enough.  Through surgical strikes, we can defeat a single enemy.  We cannot withstand a flood of armies targeting our outposts and resources.  Even the defenders of our cities do not stand a chance against the line soldiers of our potential enemies.

We have no choice but to strike first, and neutralize all Empires, one by one.  The Empire of Resoln is isolated, geographically as well as politically.  If one of our Eastern or Northern neighbors attacks us, Resoln would be perfectly positioned to invade and subjugate our undefended cities.

No one deplores the necessity of a per-emptive strike more than I do, but the responsibility for our country's safety lies with me.  Thus, I will immediately move toward the single city of the Resoln Empire, and assault it as soon as I reach it.

Magelords forever!
