How to update Sins - Retail?

How to update Sins - Retail?

I have tried both Stardock Central and the Gamestop PC app to update my retail version of Sins of a Solar Empire that I bought years ago. Stardock Central does not register any Stardock software on my PC, while the Gamestop app recognizes the software and but will not update without a registration key, which I have but cannot figure out where to enter on their blasted app. Their support had no answer at all, and directed me here.

That said... anyone have an idea as to how to update this game? I would really like to play it again, but with all the patches/fixes from over the years. The game seems to run fine otherwise as version 1.00.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/help.

Hi everyone,

I went through pretty much everything that you all mentioned.  After many wasted hours I finally got my retail copy of Sins of a solar empire trinity registered with Stardock.  I downloaded the stand alone patch, was incredibly excited after much frustration, clicked run and.... "sins of a solar empire-trinity could not be located on your system.  re-install sins of a solar empire-trinity and then run this patch again." .... WHAT?!?!   -_-

I tried reinstalling, downloading and running the patch through the Stardock application, editing registry entries to maybe help the patch find the game which is most definitely on my system etc.  But no luck sadly.  And I cannot just download the entire game from Stardock because I have a data limit on my internet :(  In desperation I downloaded the gamestop app and wasted another hour linking my accounts.  It showed sins, sins entrenchment, and sins diplomacy on my computer but of course I could not update them because my product "was not registered".  Finally found the stupid hidden secret register button and registered my sins.  Which then shows up on my games list below the other 3 as 'sins trinity'...but says its not installed and wants me to downlaod 2 gigs of the game...which like I said I cannot do.  :(

I did email stardock but have not heard back yet.  However, that was only a few days ago.  I was just hoping someone here might be able to help me :)  Thanks guys!

G'day

I went to the https://www.sinsofasolarempire.com/ Forums,

looked up the topic [reference files] sins 1.193 , entrenchment 1.053 & diplomacy 1.34 rebellion 1.1 now( with the stop game 1.37 trinity refs now

Then clicked on the link for the update i wanted to play the mods, its not auto install patch's you have to find the right spot to install them, i used Gamestop to find the folders the main game is in, then downloaded the update files, copy them to the main folders now works.

I have the same problem with the gamestop app. Updated my Retail boxed version of SINS ok but when I try to update or register my DLC Entrenchment which was bought at the end of 2009 through the app, it says the key is already registered to another user. BS !  The email with the key was printed out after the DLC sale in 2009, put in a file folder and locked in a cabinet so it's not like it was shared or got out somehow. They screwed up the transfer from impulse to gamestop. Also tried to re-register it through stardock and that does not work either.  Submitted a ticket to stardock support but I will probably have to wait until the wookies come home before I hear back. Who knows.

DeltaMike...

Many, many, many thanks.  Snotty email still sent to Stardock though.  This is an absolute joke for a LEGALLY BOUGHT game.

Doing your trick, update for (Trinity Edition) is now downloading through the Gamestop App :)

For your Info and anyone else having the problem - it seems my upgraded Impulse App was messed up. I uninstalled it, downloaded the Gamestop App and installed it. The App is different - even allows product code to be inputted. The games had to be reinstalled but everything is working okay now.

I don't think you can. Mine did the same thing as yours there's nothing helpful on gamestop you can download the game again for a fee on there but cannot enter the cd key of your hard copy. I've spent hourssssssssss trying to figure this out. I Goooogled where could I download impulse conveniently they don't exist and all purchases made with them gone. Haha might as well burn your game in the back yard it's more entertainment then what you'll be getting from you hard copy of sins that's what should've popped up on my screen would've saved me some time. I've come to understand they don't want you to play their game. I wish I never would've even looked at the game as much headache as it's caused. Whatever happened to putting a game in entering a key and playing simple. Now it's enter in a key to install it enter in the same key with an incomparable site which will require you to rebuy the game on their site just to play a game you already purchased. It's utterly disgusting.

I was having this same problem but I found a novel solution to it.

I have a retail box copy of Sins - Trinity.  I reinstalled in on my machine after a while of not playing, and I had to convert my old Impulse account to a Gamestop account.  After doing this, my Gamestop app showed three games installed, regular Sins, Sins Entrenchment, and Sins Diplomacy, as three separate games.  Both Entrenchment and Diplomacy needed an update, but I got the "game is not registered error" as described above.  So I followed the instructions to make a Stardock account and registered my game, which worked.  However when I tried to run the update patch I got the error messaging saying that the game was not installed on my system, same as mentioned above.

Now, in the Gamestop app I had a fourth game listed as available for download, Sins TRINITY.  It was a ~2 GB file, so not wanting to download it again I tried something.  I went to the settings menu and clicked on "Detect Application" and chose Sins TRINITY from the long list in the dropdown menu, then browsed to my game folder (just the upper level folder, not the subfolders for Entrenchment/Diplomacy, etc).  After doing this, the Gamestop app recognized my version of Sins TRINITY as being locally installed, I just needed to click "UPDATE" to get the updated version.  I had a few bugs during installation but I quit and restarted the Gamestop App and continued the update successfully.  Afterwards when I tried launching the game I needed to enter my Stardock account info and the game code again, but it worked.  Now when I run the game I see 'Trinity v1.37' in the corner, so it seems to have worked!

Hope this is helpful.

This is exactly the kind of BS that causes people to avoid paying for retail games. My key doesn't work on steam or in the activation page mentioned in this post for Stardock support. It's fine to say wait for a reply, but that's really a horrible way to treat a customer.

This is also part of the reason SoaSE:Rebellion didn't go retail I'm sure. ;)

I'm also having difficulties; I purchased a box set of Sins: trinity, used an old email to register, yahoo has since deactivated my email I used with impulse. and have since forgot my impulse info. I recently purchased a new computer and cannot update my Sins because it says my Serial Number is invalid, its the one that came in the box

Do you still have access to the Stardock account that has the same name as your old impulse account? If so, you can log into your account on the Stardock store and redownload the game there.

Also IIRC Yahoo will let you reactivate old email accounts, which should allow you to password reset your Impulse, which is now Gamestop account, or your old Stardock account.

There was a glitch with your account, which I sorted out. You can now sign in here https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products with the same credentials you used to sign into this forum. You will find the most current version of the game for download there.

I am experiencing a similar issue.  Trying to update, but the registration is stuck between two accounts on Stardock.  I just emailed support with the details, so hopefully I hear back soon.

Same problem except  my retail box doesn't have a cd key anywhere, only has 1 pamphlet with impulse stuff on one side and elemental war of magic stuff on the other side.

There's no chance someone could have taken the key? If you bought the game used it is probably already claimed. Even if you got it new retail, there have been cases of jerks buying the game, removing and claiming the CD key, then returning the game to the retailer, who then resell it because they don't know any better.   :S

you shouldn't have to email anyone to get your game to update.  Why don't you just say it, "they dropped the ball big time"
