Essence of units

What is the essence of units? I'm playing Elemental: War Of Magic v1.4, there is no essence anywhere, but some buildings help to improve that. How could this be?

Essence was removed in an earlier patch, but it was not purged from all the buildings by sloppy designers.

Did they do the same with bows? Apparently I dont have bows in game...
