Beta 2 General Feeback

I just wanted to give some general feedback -- nothing too specific. I was itching to play SOASE again and noticed Rebellion had been listed on Steam with the beta option so I bought it. Here are my impressions.

The Great:

  • Really like the titan class ships. They help prevent the game from dragging on but can also easily be over-relied upon.
  • New music is very nice. There is a particular new track that plays for TEC that makes me think of some great sci-fi franchises.
  • Responsive UI. I have not encountered any bugs, crashes, or strange behavior. I am on a high-end system (i7 3820, Radeon 7950, 16GB RAM, 2x SATA3 SSD RAID0).
  • Game can be played in a window set to any size the user desires. I really like this. It lets me chat with friends outside of Steam while playing the game. Rebellion will just keep running even when it doesn't have focus.

The Good:

  • New corvettes give an answer to the robotics ships. One of the things that really irked me about the original SOASE is that a TEC player with a legion of robotics ships was nearly invincible because of them all repairing everything so quickly.
  • Steam account integration makes it easy to play with friends. No issues interacting with the Steam overlay during gameplay.
  • Strike craft pick targets much more effectively than they did in the original SOASE. They don't sit around idle when there are enemy targets around.
  • AI has gotten a lot better at picking its targets. The Dunov and Kol combo is not nearly as lethal as it used to be.

The Bad:

  • Mines cannot be targeted even when detected. I really hate the way mines were implemented.
  • No new planet types. This seems like such a simple thing. Put in some water, forest, rock/dead, and other types of planets. There isn't enough variation. You didn't change any of this stuff from the original. Please add to it. Maybe add nebula zones that obscure other ships that are too far away from your own and force shields not to function. You could also do some neat graphical effects with this idea. Vary the size of gravity wells. Add moons. Please do something to bring more variation to the maps.
  • Hard to tell when boarding party is being used. I found myself randomly capturing pirate ships and not realizing what was going on.
  • No map preview still. I can't memorize every map layout based on its name and little postcard image. Please add some sort of map layout preview. Dots connected by jump lines is fine.

The Ugly:

  • New TEC capital ship is hideous. Please tell me that's not the final model. It does not fit in with the others at all.
  • Not enough new content or changes from Trinity. It is going to be hard to convince friends to buy.
  • New corvettes are hard to target. They move around so quickly it's hard to manually tell ships to attack them.

I played my first game as TEC rebels earlier today after purchasing Rebellion on Steam. I intend to play a game as Advent in the next day or two. The first thing that struck me is how much stuff was similar to Trinity. I don't really want to get into a discussion about balance. I do want to underscore that I think the game needs more content to differentiate itself from Trinity. So far I like the beta, but it will be a tough sell to friends to get them to buy unless there's more new stuff.

Keep up the good work! Looking forward to a Beta 3.

+ 1 on the touch sell - im trying to win over my lan crew but no such luck

they all stress about a dsync that happend in entrenchment and wrecked the game (just under 50 hours in) and noone wanted to reload using autosave because we couldnt work out how far back the dsync happened

50 hours in?

A stupidly stupid long game of sins lasts 5 hours. 0_O

that said.

Lan groups are the BEST GROUPS, because they can notice desyncs easy, and gathering files to send in the to devs so the devs CAN FIX THE ISSUE is really easy.

so get your friends to play, and desync again and get it FIXED.

...What kind of game are you playing? I've had nearly 100 hour games back in Trinity with the toughest AI in a 10 man FFA. 50 hours is reasonable.

On a large enough map I suppose I could stomach a long game over the course of a couple weeks. I'm not sure that 50 hours would be acceptable. I tend to like my matches to stay around 2 hours. If they go longer than 3 I get annoyed. At the other extreme, I stopped playing Starcraft 2 against other humans because matches lasted 5 to 10 minutes. That's just way too short. 1 to 2 hours is pretty much the sweet spot for me.

I have about 70 Steam friends. I chatted with about a dozen with regards to SOASE Rebellion and the lack of change, particularly positive change, dominates the conversation. I had played 7 Deadly Sins quite a bit with friends before Entrenchment came out. That expansion effectively killed the game for myself and pals because nothing was done to stop robotics cruiser repair spam and mines were unbelievably annoying. Had I not been in the mood for a space RTS game I doubt I would have purchased SOASE Rebellion to be honest. It needs more content to differentiate itself from Trinity. Ships and map variety are critical. There's still time to address this!

I hadn't considered bringing up the game to LAN party friends. Between 20 and 30 coworkers get together for LAN parties on the last weekend of every month. UT2004 is generally the most popular game especially with the custom maps and weapons myself and another individual have built. I would be open to doing the same with SOASE Rebellion, but there's a limit to how much stuff I want to change.

Seriously 2 hour games?

I guess I like long space sim games...

In any case, I explained Rebellion to my friend this way.

"Did you like Sins? Then you'll like Rebellion. Did you not like Sins? Then you won't like Rebellion."

At its core it's still Sins... it's just not enough new stuff. Simple as that. I bought the original Sins on day fucking 1 and I love and support this company quite a bit, but that needs to be addressed. We need new -stuff-. And options. Seriously, just like, give us a page that lets us turn off or on everything in the game. Planet types, ship types, techs etc. That'd make things a lot more interesting.

The game starts normal, but when i want to start a saved game it opens the loadscreen and a "beep" rings... nothing happends...

I'm playing via Steam, before that update i had no problems..

please help.

It states in the update notes that saves prior to April 17th patch will not work.

Yep, 2 hours. I have to work for a living and there are other things I want to do in my time off. I'll save and pick it up again later on at some point, but in general I prefer games to last through a sitting. Playing at the higher speeds certainly helps a lot.

I've also been around since the start. I almost got into modding on the original. I remember posting ship models on these forums several years ago. I never stuck with it unfortunately. I could certainly get back into that for this game, but there's a limit to how much stuff I want to change or add to. At some point I feel like my time would be better utilized coming up with my own game (which I'm doing).

Apologies if that sounded like it was directed at you ZJB. It wasn't, it was simply a general response to the thread.

Just like there is no maximum scale to a Sins game universe map ( well the limit is what your computer can handle ), there is no set limit to how long a game can last. In the end it all really comes down to how long you actually want to be playing that specific game, or the quality of your opponents.

This does not belong in this thread.  Anyways, read the patch notes.  They said that the new version would invalidate old save files.
