Updated Custom Map Pack is now available! (July 14, 2012)

------------------------------------------

July 14, 2012:  An updated map pack is now available!

Special thanks goes to the modder Harpo

for updating the maps for me.

-----------------------------------------

I have created an auto-install file that should install my custom map pack into the proper folder for Rebellion.  You can find it here:

http://TinyURL.com/Sins20

If you want to host one of the maps and other people want to join your game but don't have the maps, it's no problem!  Tell them to go to that address or just use it as the title for your game.  They don't have to close Sins and it only takes 45 seconds to download and run the install file!  (It's easy!)  Just remember this:

TinyURL.com/Sins20

These maps were designed with online multiplayer PvP in mind. Everyone gets an equal start (as equal as possible) and in most maps you start near your allies and not wedged between enemies (few "suicide" spots). Many of the maps were designed to encourage and facilitate (require?) team-play.  Enjoy!

Screenshots--cllick on this link

Maps in the pack:

Asteroid Belt -- comes in different sizes from 1v1 on up to 5v5.

Buzzsaw -- a 5-on-5 map in three versions -- random starts, staggered player starts, and all allies together ("team together")

Circle of Death -- a 5-on-5 map with the random, staggered, and team together options.

Death~a~Whirl -- a 5-on-5 map with the random, staggered, and team together options.  It's multistar.

Diamond -- a 4-on-4 or 2v2v2v2 map where you start with your ally.  On the Near version all allies start together, on the Far version they start in groups of two.

Gateway to Paradise -- a very popular map that has been played several times online.  This is a take-off on the standard 3v3 map Gateway.  All allies start next to one another with the opposing sides starting on opposite sides of the map.  The idea of course is to take ownership of a lucrative empty star.  The original version was 3v3, but there are also two 4v4 versions and a 5-on-5 version.

Race to Paradise -- this is a 5-on-5 map of Gateway to Paradise, but with most of the center area excised so that the teams aren't very far away from the sun and each other.  It should lead to early combat.  It was created at the suggestion of the player 1st Warfleet.

Kaleidoscope -- a 5-on-5 map with the random, staggered, and team together options.

Nowhere to Hide -- a linear, circular 5-on-5 map where there is literally nowhere-to-hide.  It comes in the random, staggered, and team together flavors.

Red Crush -- my first map for 5-on-5.  It comes in two flavors.  Allies start next to one another and face off against the other team, separated by a couple chokepoints.

Ring of Risk -- a 3-v-3 map that comes in two flavors.  Allies start together and are separated from the opposing team by a circle of planets that must be traversed.  On each side of the ring is a long, lucrative string of planets.  So the map has two chokepoints, basically.  Ring-of-Risk-2 doubles the number of chokepoints.

The Mosh Pit -- 5-on-5 map where allies start together separated by a ring of interconnected planets.  It has 5 or 6 chokes.

Warring Systems -- my pride and joy.  This is my 5-on-5 interpretation of the standard 2v2 map Systems of War.  The original map had too many planets to be practical for online multiplayer (too much lag mid-game), so I cut some out.  The v4 has fewer planets than the v3 and is probably more playable.

If you are a savvy guy and want to see the little title pictures (like the Gateway to Paradise title box) I designed for each map, you can take the .TGA files in the TGA folder and add them to Rebellion's "Textures" folder.  Then you'll see a little title box for each map when you go to set up a game.  Putting the .TGA files (Targa graphic files) in the right place is 100% optional.

Any screen shots, explanations, expected play styles or game styles etc?

They're the same maps as my previous packs--they just auto-install into the right place for Rebellion now.  No one gets a screwed starting position on any of the maps and for most of them you start near your allies.  Highlights include a (now playable) 5v5 version of the standard 2v2 map Systems of War called Warring Systems and different versions of the map Gateway to Paradise (inspired by the standard 3v3 map Gateway).  The biggest edition might be the map Race to Paradise, which is  Gateway to Paradise but with a dramatically reduced center area on the main star, which should lead to frantic action and earlier combat.

Well for those that have no idea what your previous map packs are all about and would like a comprehensive list of what this one includes, screen shots of what it is and how what is unique about it (such as a few things you mentioned there in your previous post) you might want to post it up in the OP, especially for new players. Just a suggestion. You'd probably get more people to DL it that way that have otherwise never tried any custom maps.

hmm... I didn't know you made map packs, Sanchezz, and I've been on the forums for a 1.5 years+ or so now.  So none of the new players (most likely) will know of you map packs.  It'll be interesting to try out though.

Its great to see other map makers out their I have two maps in developement that are aimed towards the occupation victory^^ I may give your maps a look.

How are you guys making maps besides from scratch?  If you use the in game map builder then try to edit those maps with the tools the editor crashes out and all you get is a big white screen with a big Red X in the middle of the screen.

I wanted to make some of my older maps for the new game, but I really don't want to sit and make it from scratch.

I pimp them fairly often.  Most people get them when they see a game hosted with one of my custom maps and a title like:  5s TinyURL.com/Sins15   Some people figure out that that's a URL.  People see other people and sometimes their friends joining the game and wonder what they have to do to join and ask about it.  I also make a lot of noise in the Lobby encouraging people to go to that link and download and install the maps.  (It takes less than 45 seconds and you don't have to close the game!)

I'm hoping I can actually play a custom map game online.  I've play-tested two or three of my maps in Rebellion and they run fine.  I don't see why there would be a problem if more than one person were playing them online at the same time, so hopefully they're ready for Rebellion prime time.

You need to go find the new edition of Galaxy Forge.  I think it's built into the Rebellion files, somewhere in your Steam folder, but I haven't actually dug it up yet.  The maps in my pack were made with an older version of Rebellion (sorry, no Moons).

Cool looking maps Sanchezz. I think I'll be downloading this pack.

I should probably point out that many of the non-home asteroids on those maps have extra militia on them, as do some of the planets.

Lol I want to see these maps played out in ICO.

Awesome stuff! Just move this into your OP and you'll be set. ^_-

Thanks Sanchezz!

Can anyone tell me why this crashes in the rebellion galaxyforge and not normal sins galaxyforge? Seems odd when you can play these maps in rebellion.

What do you mean, crashes?  I hope you mean "places in the folder".  (To install the maps in your Vanilla/Entrenchment/Diplomacy folder, go to http://TinyURL.com/Sins14)

Basically, when I create the auto-install file, I can choose a path where it will add the files.  The locations are different for Rebellion and Vanilla, Entrenchment, and Diplomacy.  So, the entire point of this particular auto-install (at Sins15) was to put them in the right place for Rebellion.

how about test the maps that are new to Rebellion and give feedback on those.  Custom maps are great, but Beta test what's in first rather than use Beta as an opportunity for self-promotion.

Create the maps, put together a new Galaxy Forge for Rebellion primer, explain how it is different from Trinity Galaxy Forge.

Here's a screenshot for the new map Race to Paradise, which can be played for 4v4 or 5v5.  As you can see, there aren't many gravity wells separating the two sides, so hopefully it will result in faster-paced, furious games.  It's basically the same as Gateway to Paradise but with less stuff in the middle.

hes not a good pimp though, them hoes ain't bringin him no money!!

Beta testing custom map functionality for online play actually is part of the beta...if there is a bug there the developers need to know about it.

From looking at you maps via the picture you provided, I have a few questions. Using your "Race to Paradise" map as an example, from what I can tell, the planets on both sides of the red star (I am drawing the line right down the middle) seem to be perfect mirror images. How did you accomplish this? Did you use trigonometry by any chance, or is it a trade secret?

Also, great work on your map pack! I can see that a lot of creativity and originality has went into these maps.

I have two types of maps and some that mix elements of both.  The easiest maps to make are like Race to Paradise where both teams start on opposite sides.  The way I like to do it is to set the star at coordinates (200, 200).  Then I design one side of the map and try to place things on a 5 unit grid.  (You can specify the exact X-Y coordinates of a celestial body in Galaxy Forge.)  When I go to design the other side I just invert the numerical units around the (200, 200) point.  If I want to invert the other side along the X axis, then a planet at (100, 100) would be places at (300, 300) on the other side.  If I only want to mirror the Y axis then it would go to (300, 100).

The other category is the circular maps.  For this I actually did use trigonometry and tried to place planets on diameters separated by 9 degrees.  I think I actually created a table for all of the different angles and distances from the center.  That's how I made Kaliedoscope and some of the other maps.  If I remember correctly, most of those circular maps were designed from one or two templates with planets being added and deleted.

I'm somewhat of a science geek, so I don't mind messing around with numbers.  I will state that making Sins maps is very easy compared to making FPS maps.  I can make a Sins map in about 2 hours, but it might take me 200 hours to make an FPS map.  I've released four capture-the-flag maps for the original Unreal Tournament (1999).  Here are some screenshots:

Somebody necro'd this thread when it shouldn't have been bumped.  The map pack worked in the Rebellion Beta, but they did something to the required format for the maps and now the game crashes when you attempt to go to the Galaxy Forge menu.  Hopefully a cool modder named Harpo will release a map update for us soon.

Bump for updated map pack!  The maps will now work with the current release of Rebellion, thanks to Harpo!
