My steam CD key doesn't work

I have just brought Sins of a Solar Epire:Trinity of steam. When i loaded it i created and account and as i went to type my cd key (the one steam gave me) into the place it tells me it didnt work. i tried changeing 0's to O's and changing the -'S to spaces or not spaces at all but still it hasnt worked. i tried to get the key of stardock but i said i didn't own the game. Anyone know how to fix this because i want to play the game!!

If you contact your place of purchase, they should be able to give you a replacement key.
