Do you have problems looking at modern LED LCD monitor for extended periods of time?

Eyestrain, dizziness, headaches

Extremely interesting read. After my old Dell 2209WA became defective, I tried to find a new monitor I could use. To my surprise, I have found out that the modern LED monitors are extremely unpleasant to look at, and I started to look for the source of the problem. It seems that all the flickers PWM and temporal dithering introduce to a computer screen is very harmful for the neural system - at least in case of sensitive people, and long-term.

Do you have a similar experience?

Lost my old 17inc LED Phillips monitor in the Christchurch Earthquakes :(( it could even do 75hz which seemed alot nicer than the 60hz it could do. The new ips one only seems todo 60hz.

As I wrote in a PM to you, my new CCFL Benq G2420HD is just fine. It's not perfect, it has all the TN monitor drawbacks, but it induces absolutely no eyestrain, unlike all the LED panels, and I game on it for hours regularly.

I recommend a German site prad.de (most reviews are in german, use Google Translate if necessary) - they started to include "backlight" section into each review, measuring the PWM flicker with osciloscope and providing accurate information about its characteristics.

The one monitor that should be satisfactory is HP ZR2440w - it features over 400Hz PWM duty cycle, which should provide comfortable and stable image. It's not exactly a gaming monitor, though, due to the high resolution (1920x1200) and rather large input lag, but for strategy games it may be just fine.

Important news - it appears that starting with August 2012, there are new monitors on the market that don't seem to use PWM for brightness control. The models I have found so far (according to tftcentral.com reviews and prad.de):

DGM IPS-27001WPH, Samsung S27B970D and Dell U2713HM, HP ZR2740w

There may be others, and most importantly, others will probably come. That's wonderful news!

Thank you.  The strain that decades of computer use has had on my eyes is really bad, and I am always looking for ways to diminish it.

One year later, the problem has been actually noted by the manufacturers, and the offer of flicker-free monitors is growing!

Tftcentral is kind enough to manage a database of flicker free monitors, and examines the backlight of all reviewed monitors with great care:

prad.de also provides detailed information aboujt backlight quality.

I am currently considering the purchase of Dell 2414H, since it seems to have all the nice characteristics I have been looking for - reasonable gaming performance, flicker-free backlight, AH-IPS panel, and a very reasonable price.
