Purchase Star Ruler for Desura or GamersGate?

Hate Steam, and D2D doesnt seem like it'll work seeing that I would be required to have a GF account.

On second thought, if the Steam version doesnt use steamworks then Id get it (meaning no mandatory updates etc.)

Thoughts?

I have the GamersGate version. All it's patches are available there, on the game's page. If you like something client based, you could get the Desura version. I personally prefer GG, since it doesn't have one.

It's also available on Impulse, in spite of the devs saying they wanted to pull it after the Gamespot deal.

Note you can also purchase Star Ruler from BMT Micro off our website: clicking the Buy Now button will get you there.  It just gives you a zip or exe I believe when you complete your purchase.

We did pull SR, to clarify unacomn's statement.  One of our distribution partners, IGS, put it back as was their right per the agreement we signed.

We're not happy about it but it was their decision to make.  We are unlikely to return thanks to both the breach of contract by Impulse and the discussion we had with I believe GameStop's CEO.

Unfortunately, I cannot find a job anywhere and so have no money (despite being 18 I might add). My parents must purchase it for me. In this case, could my mom purchase it under my email, or would she have to buy it as a gift and give me the code? In the past I did something like that with impulse and the account got all screwed up because she didnt purchase it as a gift.

Don't feel too bad.  I was jobless at 18 myself in spite of my attempts to get another and was dead broke.  :p

Either case.  The "code" it gives you is really a URL that links to the game's download if I recall correctly.  So in either case you'll get the goods.

Also, we don't employ any DRM of any kind so feel free to back that file up in a secure location that you can get it from.  The URL shouldn't expire either though, so as long as you've got that link you should be good to go.

If anything does happen to screw up, you've got us on speed dial if you hit up our forums, our e-mails, and etc.

So ive purchased the game in the manner that youve told me and... what the hell... am I only allowed to download the game once? How is that not DRM in itself?

Make backup copy of installer to another HDD or DVD.

You could have bought from Steam and you wouldnt have any problem redownloading as many times as you wanted :)

Not to my knowledge.  The URL should be valid forever.

Besides that, as the others have said:  How could that be considered DRM?  You're allowed to back it up any place and any where you wish any number of times you like to whatever devices, storages, and so forth you desire.  It will always install and run, it will never ask for any user/pass/serial what-have-you, and it will never prevent you from playing, updating, modding, or so forthing it.

It's about as not-DRM as it gets, imo.

Well then maybe there's just some problem then that I need to get fixed up with the staff (or you if your willing). I confess I wanted to play the game with my brother and so that is why I wished to redownload the game. Other than that though, it does pose a problem in that I was planning on wiping my computer due to malware.

Do you not have any external media the game installer could be pushed to?  You could just upload it to a filesharing service and send yourself the link to it and/or your brother.

Well... im not sure how to do that. Im not dumb though, I could figure it out I guess.

This prevents you from doing so how?

The game doesn't prevent you from installing it somewhere else if you installed it somewhere already.  It doesn't delete the setup EXE/ZIP when you install it.  Just give him a copy of the installer. :P

Hes in another state. He could buy it from amazon but im not sure what DRM scheme it uses so i told him to wait because we might not be able to play eachother. From what I understand, games that come from different digital distributors dont use the same server.

No copy of Star Ruler uses DRM to my knowledge [exception: Steam].  Amazon *might* have DRM but games I've grabbed from them haven't had DRM installed.  That of course doesn't mean it's guaranteed, just my anecdotes have that experience.

If he bought from BMT Micro he'll get the same thing you got.  Star Ruler is Star Ruler no matter what distributor you got it from as far as connections go; the only potential problem may be Steam if the new patch goes out and Steam doesn't update before anyone else.

Of course you could just give him the link to your uploaded copy for him to hold on to the file while you format your drive.

We've reset the password for now but ask that you place tighter control on the links you purchase from BMT or, if you're using a proxy or VPN service, to turn it off if you're attempting a re-d/l.  Please let us know if you need further help. :)

I havent gotten a new email, so what does that mean?

What do you mean tighter control? What caused the link not to work?

That the password should function.  Re: Tighter control:  We believe that the password was auto-blocked because there were two IPs that attempted to download the file; each IP was multiple states away from the other.
