EMAIL IS OUT!

EMAIL IS OUT!

  Dear Stardock Customer,

If you're receiving this letter, it means you purchased Elemental: War of Magic before it was released.

Elemental: War of Magic was a game we had very high hopes for. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment both to us, as well as to many of our customers. Stardock's success in its nineteen years of existence has been because people know if they buy something with our name on it, it'll be excellent. With Elemental: War of Magic we failed that expectation.

For the past year, Stardock has been working on something new -- Elemental: Fallen Enchantress. We went back to the drawing board to create not an expansion, but rather a new game in the Elemental universe.

Fallen Enchantress is currently in beta. Both the beta and the final version will automatically be added to your Stardock account free of charge.

Tomorrow, January 19, at approximately 3:00 PM EST you'll be able to download the beta version by visiting: download.stardock.com.

We hope you find Elemental: Fallen Enchantress to be a game that lives up to the expectations you had for War of Magic. We thank you for your support and look forward to your feedback.

Sincerely,
Brad Wardell - President & CEO
Stardock Entertainment

Now it's time to wait for the download to show up in my account!

AHAHAHAHAHA.... so what is this, now!??!

I just got the email.

I truly hope that Stardock delivers what it set out to with Elemental:WoM. It was very generous to offer Elemental:FE free of charge to those who trusted enough and wished to desire new voices in the game industry to buy WoM relatively early in its beta.

I'm not lying when I say this: I had concerns with WoM from the start. Why? Because simply there wasn't anything equivalent to a clear rubric to demarcate the vision the designers had in mind for the final game.

What was the result? Unfocused, ad-hoc development. Features that were added because maybe "they seemed cool" but derailed other aspects of the game or stuck out like a pimple, unable to incorporate into the structure of the game as a whole.

Demigod was designed in much the same way. The final product turned out to be alright, certainly not as great as was advertised, but still that was fortunate. I suppose in some ways its style of game was more forgiving of unfocused development than 4X style game Elemental was panning out to be.

So, my LOUD, RESOUNDING ADVICE TO STARDOCK, IN BOLDED CAPS:

KEEP DESIGN FOCUSED TO A PARTICULAR VISION. ALL THE GAME'S DESIRED FEATURES SHOULD BE DELIBERATELY CHOSEN FROM THE START AND INCORPORATED IN AN OVERALL, FRAMEWORK DESIGNED FROM THE BEGINNING, ONE THAT MAGNIFIES EACH FEATURE'S POTENTIAL AND MAKES THE WHOLE DIRECTED TOWARDS A PARTICULAR GOAL, MUCH STRONGER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS.

WHY WAS DEMIGOD ONLY OK? WHY DID ELEMENTAL:WAR OF MAGIC FAIL?

BECAUSE BOTH GAMES WERE DESIGNED WITH AN AD-HOC PRINCIPLE THAT ONLY CONSIDERED HOW FEATURES WERE TO INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER AND THE UI AFTER THE FACT WHEN IT WAS TOO LATE

ALSO MAKE SURE USER INTERFACE CONSIDERATIONS COME FIRST, NOT LAST!!!!! THAT'S WHY TRUE GENERALS FAILED IN DG!!! THAT'S WHY ELEMENTAL:WOM WAS A MESS!!!!!

Thank you, and I sincerely look forward to your FUTURE SUCCESS IN ELEMENTAL:FE.

Mine was ordered on... Monday, October 11, 2010.

What if the world ends before next week rolls around!?

The cruelty is unbearable.

LoL I've jokingly pondered that while awaiting the final book of the Wheel of Time series. Will it arrive before the Mayan calendar ends!?! Or before the radical oligarchs rip our world apart with their imperialistic and fascist aims?!? I read the first book upon first printing, 21 years ago.  I've gotten every following book as soon as it was possible. Finally, after all these years, the story is just one book away from reaching a world sundering climax that has been building from book one.

Hmmm... sometimes an ad-hoc can be a refreshing approach and can develop into very unique designs (see most indie games). The problem is when there is a first time engine without enough background in designing a particular type of game (going from space to ground environments).

A company like EA would be a great example of planning everything out ahead of time and not really doing much else.

I have the exact same date, so apparently they haven't gotten to us yet.  Judging from that email, we won't need the email to get the beta, but a little reassurance wouldn't hurt.

What a day of expectation that was :d And what a let down the release was..

And now they have gotten our panties in a twist again...

You don't need the email if you're here already.

The beta gets added to your account automatically. You don't have to do anything.

If you have any questions, just go to the download.stardock.com page and check your WOM data.

While I agree with your point that UI design should be included from the outset (and should be iterated on consistently throughout the process) I find it a bit amusing that someone complaining about bad user interaction systems chose to write what they thought was the important part of their response in a manner that is more difficult to read than normal text.  It honestly caused me to skip what you said until someone else made an interesting comment in response to you.

Anyway, EFE's interface looks to be a major improvement.  And the best part is that we'll get to find out whether it is or not in about six hours.   \o/

I gots E-Mail :). Where me game? Bizzaro wants play game!!!

er...wait a minute, been watching too many cartoons, my bad. I did get the E-Mail though :D

Sigh, you know I am really regretting now ordering when I did, on August 28 :-/ Can't even remember why I didn't preordered it.

Saddest thing is I was half sure I had preordered due to a mail dated on sept 1st with the release add (I'll blame Google for storing my very old emails).

Still, guys let us know how bloody awful and chock full of decease (singular, but of variable nature, according to froggboy's post) the game is

Well I expect the game to fail at a lot of things. Mu curiosity is how much better it is compared to the first.

illauna: nice idea to use the fallen enchanteress as an avatar. I could also do that since it looks very similar to mine.

So I got mine on the 28th of August, but it still says [pre-order] in the invoice, so I should be getting an e-mail today? Do I need to e-mail stardock or something? Is there a cutoff date for what pre-orders count?

I am guessing if it says pre-order, you are good, after all that is the cut off (as far as I understand it)

Wow, must say I love Stardock Central. So practical and straight forward. Thumbs up. Can't wait for the download to arrive! :D

(Damn, it's hard to live in Norway when Stardock follow eastern US time...... still 3.5 h to go I guess.....)

The email that was sent out yesterday went to those who pre-ordered Elemental: War of Magic (purchases before August 24, 2010). If you did pre-order War of Magic and did not get an email, don't worry....be sure to check your "My Downloads" page at 3:00 PM EST today. The Fallen Enchantress BETA 1 should be there, waiting for you.
