What Constitutes Spam

Spam is 'unsolicited advertising'.

That's the general/accepted terminology for the definition of spam.

On Stardock's skinning site - Wincustomize.com that excludes 'all' threads relating to skinning programs and their promotion, as they are specific to our 'game'.

Someone promoting their new Windowblinds skin release...whether a premium [paid-for] or freely released skin is NOT spam.

Someone linking to an off-site skinnable [such as the recent Gaia skin] is NOT spam. [its removal was due to other issues].

What 'appears' to be advertising, if it originates from legitimate sources [Stardock's Moderators/Admins] is also not spam.  It is social communication to fellow members who may be interested and thus benefit from this communication.

No matter the source/origins what you see on the site will always be 'policed content', and typically verified for safety/security prior to its posting.

REAL spam is removed. as are its authors.

You, as a site member/contributor can feel safe that anything posted publicly is NOT detrimental to your well-being and/or site enjoyment.

That's why we are here...;)

And, if you DO spot a spam post/thread on the forum just report it.

DO NOT REPLY TO IT!

guess there is a reason for this thread?

providing information and recommending a product (free or otherwise) seem to be two different things. one could be considered a public service and the other spam. guess it depends on your point of view. Some time the edges get a little blurred when providing content is more important than providing a service.

IMHO, rather than touting a single product possibly a comparison of similar products would be considered more of a public service.

what is this, :banhammer:   Maxwell's silver hammer?

Ditto GMC, I also stated this in a private e-mail to a Mod. Give options and comparisons so user can determine what is best for their needs and wants.

Does it really bother you that much? I mean seriously.

Someone posted an article about a piece of software and one or two people get themselves into a twist about it.  If you don't like it, just don't read it.  Simple as that.  It's just information.

my gosh, you all start a thread about what your definition of what a public service announcement is to which I have some disagreement with. I just stated my opinion, you're the one getting into a snit over it.

Quick related question-

When one of these jokers spams a half-dozen or so posts pretty much at once, reporting just one of them will do the trick right?

Don't want to spam the mods with reports about spam. \o/   Sometimes I'm not sure though.

Pretty much reporting one will do as we check the spammer for other forum posts and comments.

This may be a dumb question but why would it matter. When a Mod deletes the thread, all reply are deleted as well, correct?

For one it keeps the post active instead of falling off the 'recent posts'.

it may also encourage the spammer, don't give them any satisfaction, negative or otherwise.

The labeled ingredients in the classic variety of Spam are chopped pork shoulder meat, with ham meat added, salt, water, modified potato starch as a binder, and sodium nitrite as a preservative. Spam's gelatinous glaze, or aspic, forms from the cooling of meat stock.[1] The product has become part of many jokes and urban legends about mystery meat, which has made it part of pop culture and folklore.[2]

Varieties of Spam include Spam Classic, Spam Hot & Spicy, Spam Less Sodium, Spam Lite, Spam Oven Roasted Turkey, Hickory Smoked, Spam with real Hormel Bacon, Spam with Cheese, Spam Black Pepper, Spam Garlic, and Spam Spread.[3] Availability of these varieties varies regionally.

Now you know.

That make's sense. Normally you Mods delete them pretty quickly but I suppose they could take a life of their own if posted during the off hours.

Now, what would reply 75 in this thread be consided?

OK....someone hit him....;p

This thread wasn't prompted by the TWO people that considered the sky was falling because a Mod posted information about some software....it was prompted by the two spam reports we received claiming that Gaia thread to be spam.

Since that thread was subsequently removed [due to issues some were having with the use of the linked product] those who reported it may have assumed the removal was a vindication of their claim.

Specifically we will accept skin-related news, no matter it's commercialism or not...[that's exactly what posts re Master skins are all about] because they are relevant and may be of interest to all.

The reason mainly to not reply to spam is that often it is an old thread that's hit...and the subsequent spam deletion pushes the thread back to it's 'position' in time....more comments added keep it current and thus on the 'front page' when typically the thread has no current relevance.

Wow interesting thread. All this cause of the nice colorful earth friendly Gaia10? The person who posted that thread was ME aka "NOT a SPAMER EVAR" and all I wanted to do was show/share their cause and how nice it looked since they even supported Windowblinds by having a skin made for that software. Plenty of choices offered by Gaia10 websites supporting many products.  It was in no way spam. I haven't been active member here but since i saw all these new Stardock goodies coming up, i got back into the skinning. I never new they had a faulty mod installer. My apologies, but there are always risk with any software. I am also very discouraged to even post anything now about any skin found outside this website. That's how I feel now after coming back to Wincostumize.com.

Rood, no need. That's why there are Gallery Mods here who do a seriously excellent job in their judging as well as what they do to protect us all. No one ever thinks about that aspect of their work, so maybe it was a "silver lining" event in a way. Now people seeing and reading this will have a greater appreciation of what they do, day after day... year after year.

It also serves to illustrate why WC is so special and so safe... heck, even the grammar is Moderated. ;)

Don't you wish other places were this safe?
