An assessment of my modded AI

Eight players - no human

As some of you may know, I've been part of a group of modders who have been trying to fix some of the problems with the TOA AI, most notably the various errors with the tech trees. I've stopped working for a while, but I'm aware there's still problems with the AI, so I decided to run an AI vs. AI game to see how they all stacked up in a vacuum. While it's possible to use cheats to have the AI play itself, this is hard to follow and frequently crashes, so I went with the method detailed by Tolmekian in this post: use cheats to reveal the map, summon a Vegans-style minor race, then take control of that minor race in order to effectively remove yourself from the game. I also gave myself all the techs in order to make sure the AIs would leave me alone.

Settings for the game:

I elected to test 8 AIs here - the Terrans, Drengin, Altarians, Arceans, Torians, Yor, Korx, and Drath. The Korx and Arceans have been having particular problems, so watching what happened to them would be interesting.

All the minor races were modded to colonize and behave more like major races. Unknown to me when I set things up, the race config file I was using was one where I had replaced the Paulos and Snathi with minor race versions of the Drath and Korx (as per the events of the Dark Avatar campaign), so I wound up with two separate Drath and Korx civilizations - one major, one minor.

Starting out

I summoned the Vegans and took control of them with no problems. These were the starting positions of each major race:

The Terrans, with lots of minor races nearby. The blue shield in the left corner is "me" as the Vegans. The minor Korx and Drath are up there as well.

The Drengin - their cluster is fairly small, but they've got a lot of room to expand.

The Altarians near the bottom of the map. Fittingly enough, they're close by the Drath.

The Arceans at quadrant center. Their position wound up being just as heavily fought over as you'd expect.

The Torians way off to the side.

The Yor.

The Korx - their starting location, as you can see, was pretty awesome.

And this was the Drath, between the Arceans and Altarians.

Overall galaxy.

I'll continue this tomorrow as soon as I figure out how to post thumbnails - these images right now are too big.

What's happened to your AAR Qrtxian?

Check the time, it's only been three nine hours. ;)

I couldn't figure out how to create thumbnails, so I went with direct links. A bit ugly, but should work, and it's preferable to taking up tons of space with the big screenshots I was using.

By July, the situation looked something like this:

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/qrtxian/GC2TA_Vegans_1308617513.jpg

The Drengin and Torians were emerging as the leaders.

What each race was researching:

Terrans

Drengin

Altarians

Arceans

Torians

Yor

Korx

Drath

The first UP meeting - I voted for the Yor more or less at random.

The galaxy as 2228 began:

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/qrtxian/GC2TA_Vegans_1308618448.jpg

What everyone's region of space looked like at this time:

Terrans

Drengin

Altarians

Arceans

Torians

Yor

Korx

This massive unclaimed cluster next to the Korx would wind up giving them a huge advantage later on.

If you would seek peace, prepare for war: the good races were the first to research weapons:

Various racial wonders were built during this time:

The Arceans remained the small man on the field, with truly awful research:

So, I've played a lot more of the test. I'll put up a more detailed report later on, but a quick survey of the situation:

The year is now 2232. The Arceans are gone, crushed by the Drath and Torians (they surrendered to the latter). Two main wars are raging - the Drengin vs. the Torians and a ton of minor races, and a quasi-alliance (no formal one yet - in fact the only races with Alliances are the bad guys) of the Drath, Altarians, and Terrans vs. the Yor. The Korx have stayed mostly out of it, but are currently beating up the Scottlingas. The Yor war was going in the "allies'" favor, but the Yor might turn things around now that they've got Black Hole Guns. The Drengin have overrun several of the Torian border colonies, but the Torians have much better weapons techs and look to have stopped the onslaught for now.

Since I had cheats on, I decided to trigger a mega event about half a year ago to see how the AIs would take it: it was the galactic plague. Most of the major races responded pretty fast, as did some of the minors, though the minors that didn't react immediately are still affected (and aren't even researching the cure). The Terrans and Drath don't have the cure yet either.

Other observations:

  • I may have gone overboard trying to cure the Drengin's failure to research their manufacturing techs, as they are now obsessed with them to the detriment of almost everything else. So far, this hasn't hurt them too much, but only because they did well at the start.
  • Ion Cannons (Drengin unique mass drivers) are truly horrible. I don't know what the exact problem is yet, but the Drengin have never gotten beyond Ion Cannons III while everyone else has third-tier weapons at the least. I'm fairly certain that this is going to come back to bite them hard.
  • As mentioned, weapons are at a much higher level overall when compared to a normal game. Defenses are almost nonexistent. This may or may not have something to do with the absence of a human player. Weapons types are split almost evenly between missiles and mass drivers with no beams to speak of.
  • The Drengin have been unusually diplomatically active. Among other things, they apparently traded Plague Cure to the Korx and have exchanged both treaties with the Yor - one way I see the game ending is a Drengin-Yor-possibly Korx alliance mopping up the good guys, who have, again, failed to research any yellow techs.
  • The Korx look like the sleeping giant of the game - largest planet count, huge economy, but they haven't done much.
  • The Arceans truly stunk. I'm going to have to check them out pretty thoroughly, as this is all too typical of some of their recent performances.
  • Attention to hull techs was pretty good, but attention to extreme colonization techs wasn't: the only races to actively pursue it were the Torians, Yor, and Korx, although some of the others are getting into the act now - too bad most extreme worlds are taken.
  • Overall, despite some flaws, AI behavior is vastly improved over my last test (which featured an unmodded game).

And again: what happened to your 'other' AAR? The one that you were going to come back to a few weeks ago? Has it gone the way of so many here?

It hasn't been abandoned - I will finish it eventually, since I have all the notes for the game saved on my computer. I just don't have much interest in it right now.

Ok that's gonna have to suffice I guess for the mo lol

Hey keep up the good work!  I haven't played GC2 for years but your mod made me reinstall it again.

I've never posted my mod anywhere - it's along the same basic lines as some of the ones that have been released, but except for the colonizing minors (which I didn't post either, but I did give instructions for reproducing) I've never released it in any way. You must be thinking of Tolmekian's or MarvinKosh's mods.

I will provide a more detailed summary of the events leading to the current point in this test sometime tomorrow. No, really, this time I mean it.

Ah, you're right I had it confused with Tolmekian's.

War was beginning

The second half of 2228 saw the first wars break out, as someone paid the Torians to attack several races.

The map looked something like this at this time:

In Terran space, the Lentzlandians did unexpectedly well at colonizing, beating the Terrans to several planets.

The game's first random event. This may have had something to do with the unexpectedly high weapons research of the late game:

Another UP meeting came to nought:

The Drengin began thugging other races for cash:

Trading in the early game, including the Torians and Scottlingas and the Terrans and Drengin

The Akilians steal the Drengin's techs. While the "trading planets" part of this event has never worked right, it can still be fairly significant, as it provides a massive boost in research to the lucky minor race involved.
