New skin creator here.

Hello, all; I've been reading this forum for a while, and have been studying the excellent tutorial found here.  I'm on p. 5 at the part where the author talks about slicing the start menu for reassembly in SS.  My start menu isn't exactly square like the illustrated one is, so I'm not very sure about how to go about slicing it.  Is it safe to publish an image here of a work in progress, or is that not recommended for security reasons?

peace,

Mally

I was taking a stab in the dark. I saw that the image count layer was a variable, and I thought since I was using two layers at each part of the whole start menu, this looked like the most likely place to make that setting.
The image count part there should actually read 'frame' count in SKS, because that is what it's really referring to. It has nothing to do with layers.

The 'layers stacked vertically' checkbox is used for when you have more than one frame in your image and they are stacked instead of being side by side.

While we're on that subject, and before I go too deeply, am I in anyway "cheating" by using either bits of other people's photography, or by not making the graphics 100% on my own?
Jafo is the best person to answer that question, he seems to be the local expert on the subject. However, it's always best to make your own, that way there is no question as to whether it's ok or not. It really depends on where you get the images, and what sort of permissions you need to use them (if any). I know there's gotta be a thread around here on the subject....

Time for a rehash of all my graphics and approach to this.  I know more this time.  Anyone know how I can put my trial software on pause?  :time:

You're braver than I are Mally. I took one look at SKS and ran the other way. Maybe one of these days.lol

I know you could do it Uvah, you make SMX. SKS isn't really any more complicated than that, it just has more images.  ;)

A lot more images Lady X. I counted, in PS7 it has a folder browser where it displays all the tga images. a skin with 329 images as opposed to the one I'm working on now with a little more than 100. I guess that's why I like doing this stuff. I like a challenge. I'll get around to it eventually.

Not brave, Uvah, just a tad off my rocker is all.  o_O   Come on, it'd be a whole lot of fun to have someone work with me learning beside me.  You'll ask questions I haven't thought of, and maybe visa versa.

It sounds tempting Mally. But right now I've got my hands full. Perhaps when I'm done.

I hear ya, Uvah.  I remember thinking that I could make a skin in just a week or two.  Then I started reading.  By the time I made up my mind about which direction I was gonna head software-wise, I was well into my 3rd week, and hadn't even made a single graphic yet.  Only thing that was clear in my mind is what I wanted my skin to look like.

Right now, I'm wearing Steampunk by k10w3.  I like it very much, and it's easy to read for me.  I like much better Xiandi's Dark and Dirty, but in a few programs that I use everyday, the text color changes from black to a very pale gray with the D&D blind, but the background of the windows in that same software remains white.  One of these days, I'll dig in and see if I can change that without totally damaging the blind simultaneously.  Learning how to fix that will teach me something about my own skin when I get to that part.

peace,

Mally

Need some advice, friends;

This week I'll be working enough to buy Stardock Office Desktop.  I'd like to hear some recommendations for or against the Ultimate version as opposed to the standard version.  I mean, what does that extra $US 20 buy me?  The only things I know I want for sure at this point are, of course, SkinStudio Pro, WindowBlinds, and the Icon Maker tool.  Beyond that, like most folk, I like to get the most bang for my buck, but I don't necessarily need overkill, either.

I'll look forward to your thoughts.

peace,

Mally

Overkill is not always a bad thing Mally. It all depends on what you'd like to do. Making icons, WB's and the like its usually a good idea to have the pro versions to take advantage of the additional functionality as opposed to say a public or free version or a trial version. I use the public versions of some like Logon Studio, DX, Rainlendar and sysmetrix.

I absolutely agree, Uvah.  I'm not even sure there is a public version of WB.  I'm pretty sure the copy of SKS I'm using has limited functionality, and have seen a couple of times instances of things only available in the pro version.  Don't know yet what would have happened if I couldn't have purchased the retail version of WB at the end of the trial month, but fortunately, I won't have to learn.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there are 2 different "classes" of Object Desktop anymore.

I did some poking around the website, and I think you're right; I can't find a reference to the Ultimate version that was still being marketed as late as last year, at least according to a casual Google search.

That settles that question, Tim; thank you!  As to the guy who bought his Ultimate at 50% off, and still had his subscription extended another year as well, I can only say I wish I'd found such a great deal.

Look at this way Mally. If you were to buy all the programs separately it would cost you over 200.00 US. Buy the package and save 150.00 US. Can't beat that. In fact check this out. When I first discovered Wincustomize I bought Object Desktop for 50.00 US back when Windowblinds was version three or four, forget which one but I got a ton of programs with it. I spent an entire night just changing things up. Icons, Windowblinds, Logons, Bootskins, everything. I was in heaven I had so much fun. Check out my gallery and go to the last page. You'll see some of my earlier screenshots.

My current WIP has 369, and it's not done yet.  ;) Think of it this way Uvah, if you made 3 SMX's, you have already made enough graphics for a blind!

Cool! You won't regret it, you're gonna have a blast.  Just remember that you need to uninstall the trial before you install the full version.

Thanks, sydneysiders!  Actually, so am I.  I'm going with the same basic idea, but am reworking all of my graphics from the ground up.  I'm also thinking about building some of them in 3D in Second Life where I can easily texture individual components of each build, then photographing those for use in my blind.  Know of anyone who's doing this?

meanwhile... I'm sure this thread is helping more people than yourself also....

That's cool to think about.  I hope you're right, and that they feel comfortable about bringing their own questions into the thread.  It'll be better when other people are asking related newbie questions so we can learn together.

peace,

Dave

Thanks for the encouragement, Xiandi.  I will remember to uninstall the trial versions I'm using.  Except for apps that update themselves like Foxfire does, I make a practice of uninstalling an older version before installing a newer version.
