Diplomatic Victory?

Hi I'm new to the game and I do love it. I'll keep this post brief to save time for everyone.

(I have tried searching for the answers to my questions already and I apologise if they exist somewhere but I have not found them!)

I very confused about how the relationships system works.

I do understand to some degree how and why each faction likes/dislikes you (that box which tells you these things such as different race e.t.c.). I also have understood that the number of points required for this type of victory depends on the amount of players, specifically 75 x (no. of players)

But I don't understand what the numbers add up to. E.g. I might have 10 relationship with faction A, 2.5 with B, and 0 with C.

How does is this calculated to affect my rate on normal diplomacy speed? (and fastest if you know it) I've had 12 before and somehow this was worked out to 0.4 on normal.

Also the rate itself doesnt tell me much, because I don't see the points growing by 0.4 for example every second, but by a completely different amount every 30 seconds or so. What's that about?

I ask all this because I love this game and want to know it all inside out, but also because I played a 1v1 against a computer AI on normal. We never attacked each other's planets or main fleets for the entire game, because fortunately he was "blocked off" by the pirate base. The only conflict we had with each other was the destruction of each other's scout frigates. After about 1.5 hours playing, he won by achieving 150 diplomatic victory points. How did it do this if we never had any relations with each other?

I'm just so confused about the diplomacy in this aspect, and I love different ways of winning a game, I dont want to turn off diplomatic victory, I just want to learn it.

I greatly appreciate all help :)

As are we all.

The diplomacy aspect is a bit elusive even to us veterans. Most of us just shut it off.

Really!? Haha that's funny xD

Never had this kind of response in official boards before, usually everyone can answer my query right down to the tee with a list of data and mathematics. Thanks for your reply though, unfortunately I'll have to shut it off too if someone can't properly explain it as I don't want to lose some random way without knowing how it really works.

Does it go without saying then that I should pretty much ignore the diplomacy tree if DV is switched off? Or is it still useful?

One or two items are in a 1v1 (pirates and such). When you get more players involved some of the pacts are nice. But the diplomacy victory is rarely ever used because it is a bit odd.

Ask about caps, counters and other things. You will get all that here.

Diplomacy in this game is anti-climatic to say the least.

Most people do in fact play with Diplomatic Victory off, but still use the diplomacy tree.  DV is just a stupid victory condition that you get when you accumulate enough Diplomacy points.  It is very anticlimatic, will happen without any warning, and is just an arbitrary number (1750 pts I think).

You probably need to play against several unlocked AI's, and if you play a long enough game it may just happen to your surprise.  I don't know if you can get it in a 1 vs 1.  You accumulate points by raising relations - by sending Envoys, completing missions, getting pacts, researching techs that raise relations.

Even in locked team games, the diplomacy tree can be very usefull.  Pacts can bring huge bonuses.  Envoy bonuses are often nice.  And feeding is unlocked with a tier 3 tech.  It is often used online, in locked team games, especially in long deadlocked games.

The AI gets a bonus to their relationship rate, which is why most people have never bothered playing with Diplomatic victory on because it basically forces you to spam envoy cruisers to stand a chance at winning.

Fortunately the Diplomacy tree is still quite useful without Diplomatic victory. With unlocked teams you'll need the relation bonuses to form ceasefires and alliances. The ability to send tribute is an essential one in multiplayer. And the pacts can be worthwhile even on locked teams.

Thanks all for your input! I'll just switch it off for the moment, and leave it on if I go online in locked teams as you've suggested.

Yeah i'll make another topic to discuss counters.

You've misunderstood our comments about playing online.  You don't need to leave it on for online.  You don't need DV enabled to use the Diplomacy tree.  Those techs can also help acheive a military victory, largely by increasing your economic power.

In fact, nobody online plays with Diplomatic Victory on, and I think it gets automatically switched off once you lock teams.  I just wish a few people would try unlocked team games online.

I think people would try Diplomatic Victory if it wasn't so confusing.
