2 online games in 1?

Seem to be playing 2 different games in 1 game.

OK...I just bought Diplomacy as did a friend of mine. We both have CD version of Sins and and the downloads of xpacs. Everything has been fine until we started playing Diplomacy tonight. After about an hour of chatting on vent we figured out something weird ... It seems that we were like ... in 2 separate games. He was seeing a completely different version of the galaxy as i was. Even after we allied and shared vision, neither of us saw the same thing in game. He had planet X, Y and Z on his version but when i looked zoomed out it belonged to a completely different player. Has anyone else seen this extremely weird issue? And if you have WTF!??!

It happens sometimes. Its known as a desynch. You need to send the save game file somewhere ([email protected] iirc) to help them track down the issue. We almost have it beat but not quite. Hopefully the rest of your games will not do this. Its a rare issue now.

Yes, desyncs have had quite an infamous history in Sins. The Dev Journal does the best at explaining it as well as the kind of thing that can cause it. While most of the big ones have been fixed, a couple of the desync prevention strategies developed before my still be relevant for this one.

1. Disable autosave: while if you get a crash this makes it more damaging, historically this could prevent some desync bugs.

2. Restart Sins after every game. Again this is probably fixed but for a time it was by far the best method to prevent desyncs.

Also are you using any mods? While its pretty rare for mods to change things enough to cause them, it is possible, and as most mod teams do not test their work online and certainly don't have the manpower to fix one if it comes up, it may not be known.

What horrible luck.  Your first time playing online you get a desync.  The best way to avoid those is to just close Sins and reload it before you start your game with your friend.

Also, if you or your buddy ever come online to play public games and receive a Mesh File error when you try to join people's games, in all likelihood you have the mesh problem and need to fix it, which isn't real hard.  More information here for future reference:  http://TinyURL.com/Sins10

Keep up the good work!  Those desyncs are worse than a minidump, at least you know something wrong happened when you mini. lol

Indeed indeed, it was just bad luck on our part it seems. Have not had the issue for the last few games we have played...other then the absurd lag, and that's a horse of a different color. With any luck they will turn that horse to glue with the next patch.
