BOINC/Folding@Home

Just wondering if anyone here crunches for BOINC projects or folds.

I used to fold then took a break for awhile and then switched to BOINC as I like the variety of things I can contribute towards.

If there is a lot of us maybe we can start a Stardock team or something and get some friendly competition going on.

I was thinking about it, when i was buying my current compy about a year ago...but i decided not to do it, mainly cause of the power consumption. I know there is the "light" version for these things, which utilizes only one CPU core, whenever allowed, but frankly its kind of waste to run it only on one core, when i have the i7 sixcore CPU.

BTW last time i checked, there was no hybrid CPU/GPU client hich you could just download and run and do not care about anything, you had separate clients, you needed to set it up for every CPU core etc.. really unless  the people who program these things put their shit together and create something, you wont need to read shitload of webpages before using it, i am not in.

Disclaimer: As i do not want to look like a prick, looking at my previous words, i really care about good of human race. I had colleague, who died to brain tumour and if somebody told me he could genuinely find the cure to cancer to save him and all the others, i swear to God i would give him all money i have right now on my bank account (not much, but thats not the point) to do it. If at some point at the future ill have my own house/flat and would pay the power bills myself + there will be some obvious knowledge gained off the F@H (not sure it is right now), i will join this no matter how user-unfriendly the whole thing is.

I haven't done folding for a few years so I can't really say if it has improved much, but I agree it was a pain in the ass to maximize your output and run cpu or gpu clients at the same time.

The BOINC client is much easier IMO. I just attach to whatever project I like and hit go and it does its magic more or less. No having to read websites or do command line craziness. There are also gpu enabled projects and that seems to work real good as well(if you have the right gpu of course). Also, If I feel one is more important than another I can give it extra resources via the resource share. There is lots of stuff you can tweak if you so desire, but the basic setup and functions are super easy.

Also, I don't see you as a prick or anything. To each his own. It's a volunteer effort that you will probably never get any credit or thanks for in person and maybe you won't ever see any tangible results either but that doesn't discourage me any. I have a lot of friends that suffer from diseases and my own family as well. One of my good friends mothers died from cancer and recently his sister has it now too. So I have incentive to crunch in hope that someday we might find a cure and others wont have to suffer like those I know do.

As for power; Yeah it does use more, but I can easily afford it (don't eat out for a couple days at lunch time easily makes up for it) and its for a really good cause.

The science experiment type stuff is fascinating to me too so I like to contribute towards that as well. There is some really cool stuff people are doing.

Also, I'm surprised that no one has really responded. I was hoping to get a team going. :(

My local computerenthusiast site SweClockers has a Folding@Home team that's in the top 20 or so. Think they were top 17 last I checked.

They had an article about people joining in loads when they make an article about it (when it's cool'n'stuff) and then slowly dropping of when the computer crash (almost everybody got overclocked systems) due to what they believe to be the programs fault.

Many said in that thread that it's just too much hassle to make it work. And those are computerenthusiasts who are used to configuring computers and such and THEY couldn't endure the config of getting the program to run correctly!

I said that as long as I don't get any reward then it's a nogo as that program makes your CPU & GPU run on full power which increases your electricitybill and they can just FORGET that!

Some samaritans and clueless people ofcourse complained about my stance but others understood it.

A suggestion is to give 1 point for a certain amount of workunits of a certain size that you can then cash in.

could try foldit - thats more like a puzzle game but uses people to do the folding rather than raw machine power.

Well, unfortunately it seems that most people aren't interested so no team I guess. :(

I totally understand the extra power costs and why some people wouldn't want to do it. I used to think the same thing, but the reasons I crunch now out weight the extra power costs.

Anyway, if anyone wants to crunch some projects with me on BOINC, send me a PM.
