Player vs AI Games

Anyone out there fancy playing Coop vs the AI? I tried hosting a few games on Ironclad but don't seem to get any takers. Preferably looking for players in Europe to prevent lag.

I have all of the expansions and am available most evenings after 7PM GMT Mon-Fri or anytime over the weekend.

My ICO name is Karail.
You can also contact me via Steam: BulletMagnetz.

I downloaded the Distant Stars mod the other night and am really enjoying it. I would love to have a game with that enabled. What is your IGN?

Cool. Distant Stars is a good mod for long games. I am glad you released it and not with held it while you patch. Like Dawn of Victory and The Last Stand (both over 4 years in production). Sins 2 will probably be released before those mods are.

I'll be happy to test you mod addon and offer some advice, Although I am not much of a modeler/texturer but do GUI stuff for a company that makes games.

I'll be on tonight at about 7pm-8pm BST (GMT+1)

I am RipsterUK and have already added you 'Karail' and 'Raevian' on my friends list.

Sure. Do you have Steam? If so, add me (name above) otherwise PM me and we can arrange a game. I find it easiest to get games arranged on Steam as I am on that even when I am not playing.

Ditto for interest. I usually play with Distant Stars but I'm fine without it.

I'll send you a PM mate.

Ryat, sorry for the delay in my response. I have played a number of multiplayer games with the above Flagship mod and have had no problems with it what so ever. The ships seem pretty well balanced and its a huge amount of fun watching them demolish the enemy in combat.

It's a great edition to Distant Suns. Thanks a lot for making it :)

Hopefully you'll be ready to go against other people soon without any AIs.

Good day folks.

I'm also new and interested in PvAI. I can also use Distant Stars when others will.

If you want to play against a mindless opponent that has one arm tied behind its back, then suit yourself.  You an delete your botched-up name with the extra space and make a new name if you want to, btw.

As long as the AI gives a proper challenge on the higher difficulties i don't see why it matters how "smart" it is. It will still be fun to those who like co-op and who don't need the pride of winning over other players.

If you aren't limiting yourself, then once you have good fast early expansion down, there isn't really any challenge at all against nearly any AI: a starbase at each choke point will melt nearly any AI fleet. The game gains a LOT more depth when you have to actually use good strategy to win - once you know how to beat AI, there's very little challenge to it anymore.

Playing against humans instead of robots makes the game much more interesting and unpredictable. (Much, much harder, unfortunately, but also more interesting)

If/when you've mastered beating robots, please don't completely dismiss the possibility of playing pvp to add a new dimension to the game. The whole game gets much deeper  :)

(note I'm not saying "you're too scared to handle humans", I'm saying "humans make the game much more interesting") If beating bots gets boring, at least think about pvp.

That's the rub.  Eventually you'll get to the point where it's just no longer entertaining or interesting to play against the AI.  The AI is completely retarded compared to a human player.  I've seen it do the silliest things, like wasting money trying to build a starbase in a gravity well that already contains a large enemy fleet, etc.  It also has no concept of how to deal with starbases, both its own and enemy starbases.  Most of the time it just suicides on them.

All of the strategic and tactical variables and considerations in this game are just too complex for an AI.  You could play against the Cruel and Vicious AI, and I can see how it might be fun to do that with friends, but it's really still just a mindless opponent that gets a huge eco-cheat.  At some point you might crave a game where all players start out without an eco buff and where winning and losing is based on strategic choices and not on an eco buff or on tricking the AI to attack a beefed up starbase (which isn't real hard to do) or to wade its fleet into a Level 6 Marza missile barrage.  Over time you might just tire of running the same strategic algorithms through your head all the time.

The larger games, the 5v5 games, also have team-based strategy that you just won't see in a game against AI.  The opponents are much tougher, but the games are much more interesting, suspenseful, and intense.  But, it's not for everyone.  You probably do need to have some sort of a competitive streak to want to play online multiplayer PvP in any game.

Sometimes it's fun late-game seeing how long you can get the AI with its entire 800+ supply fleet to chase a single scout around the gravity well. Usually their fighters rip it to shreds in a few seconds, but you can probably prolong it almost indefinitely in a plasma storm (no SC).

"AI leader, our homeworld is being bombed to pieces and the starbase and other structures are getting torn to shreds! Should we do something?"

"No, tell every ship to keep chasing that enemy scout - we're sure to catch up with it soon!"

I would like to get together with some ppl to play vs a very hard AI team.  I live in Europe right now and have time in the evenings.  I wouldnt want to play every evening maybe a few times a week.
