Forum Update - March 22, 2011 - Spoiler tag, Youtube tag, and some fixes

Hey everyone! I recently pushed an update to the forums to make some bug fixes, and figure I'd add a few new features along the way. Here's what changed:

1. You can now give karma to users even in locked posts.

2. For those of you that do not know, you can quote only specific parts of a user's text. It works like this:

A. Select the text you wish to quote, then hit the quote button:

B. The selected text will then show up in the reply box:

If you wish to quote the entire text, simply hit the Quote button without anything selected.

This feature previously did not work on Chrome or IE9. It does now, so enjoy!

3. A Spoiler tag has been added to the editor. It allows you to mark sections of your post/reply as a spoiler, which are then hidden. Here's how it works:

A. Select the text you wish to hide and hit the spoiler icon in the toolbar:

B. You can also simply surround your text with the spoiler tag, like below:

C. The text will be shown in your post/reply as black text on a black background:

D. On websites that already have a dark background behind the post/reply, the text and text background will show up as white, as shown here on the Sins of a Solar Empire forums:

E. If a user mouses over the text or highlights it, it will appear:

This should hopefully help to prevent spoilers for not only Stardock game discussions, but any game discussions.

4. A Youtube/video tag has been added to the editor. It allows you to show a Youtube video inline. Here's how it works:

A. Click the Youtube icon in the editor's toolbar:

B. In the popup, paste the URL of the Youtube video you want to show:

C. You can also simply surround the Youtube video URL with the video tag, like so:

D. When you submit, the Youtube video will show up inline with the rest of your post/reply:

5. Some minor CSS/Color changes and bug fixes here and there.

I hope you guys enjoy these changes! Please let me know if you notice any problems with the above changes or anything in the forums. Feel free to create a new topic in the Forum Issues category if you encounter anything.

I've used it twice. I see it works on my end. Plus I use FireFox.

Great work, Bara!!! Killer update, great features. :)

Yeah!   About time those features were added!      Now I can call people n00bs without most people realizing!

Interesting.  The first time I look at a page with the spoiler tag, it shows everything as part of regular text.  After looking at other posts and coming back, (reloading the data I assume) the text is now blocked out as it should be with the spoiler tag...

Youtube is the only supposed video for now, I'll see about adding more services later. Any suggestions?

Vimeo.

It would be nice that when you do a selective quote (like above), it would still show who you're quoting and from which post.

Hmm....just posted this and it took me back to the first post instead of to the one I just posted.

Happens to me too. Every time I submit a response it goes back to page one.

Oh and I noticed that on a multipage thread, when I post I have a tendency to revert back to the first page for some reason. The post goes through but then I am looking at the first page and not the page I posted up at.

Oddly enough I've noticed the same problem. I'll take a look and see what the cause is.

I've found the problem and will be pushing a fix tomorrow morning to resolve it.

Spoiler Blocker doesnt block smileys :P

Why a spoiler though? You're hiding text but not hiding text.

Confusing.

I love these new features.

Hell Yeah, the YouTube feature works great....

This has been fixed.

The spoiler text feature isn't working in the Sins forums.  (Using Firefox if you need to know.)

It was a caching issue. I've forced it to clear the CSS cache, so you should see them now.

I'm not too worried about smilies. I think it's fine as it is.

EDIT: Hmm... looks like the spoiler tag doesn't work in quotes. I'll see about fixing that.

Vimeo.

I'll look at adding Vimeo support in the near future.

Does quoting a spoiler reveal the spoil?

- Edit - apparently so.

YouPorn

PornTube

Megashare

Novamov

MovShare

:P .... LoL J/K on those.

Seriously though, maybe Hulu and Fancast and GameSpot could be useful as they legally show TV shows we often talk about, movie trailers, and of course game-play from video games.

This has been fixed.

Even after the above fix, clicking on the 'Go to last read reply' link in the article list isn't working; takes you to the top of page 1 of the article.

EDIT: Clicking the Submit button for this reply (and edits) still took me to the top of the current page (not page 1), so maybe it's not quite fixed after all.

Just clicked "Quote" with Opera 11.01 and it crashed twice. This is most likely a browser issue...but I hadn't seen it before now.

Lets see if it works. Yup. Workin'

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll add them to my list of potentially supported video services.

Quoting spoilers should work now. You may need to do a hard refresh for it to start working, however.

Go to last read reply just worked (coming here).

I'm using IE8 at the moment.
