Music in EWoM

It's not as good as Conan the Barbarian or The Lord of the Rings. 

Not sure I would want it to sound like Harry Potter, but it's not that level of quality either.  I don't remember the music from 300, which may be a good thing and may be something that Elemental should aspire to.  I'll explain...

Here's my opinion, from someone whose clock radio and car radio are both set to the classical music station, and goes to opera several times a year: Elemental's music is okay.  It's nothing that I would buy a soundtrack to.  Yeah, I'm a bit of a snob. It's not offensive, not right away, mostly it fades into the background, with some exceptions, like when battles starts up I usually remove the headphones at that point.  The music is best when it doesn't try too hard.  When it picks up the melody to try to create a sense of tension or excitement, that is where it falls short of the mark.  For the most part I'd like to see softer background melodies.  At least the in-game music nails the renaissance feel pretty well.

Put it this way: a bigger music budget wouldn't have hurt, but I'm not expecting Stardock to hire Danny Elfman.  If I interpret "melancholical epicness" as "sounds like Lord of the Rings," I'd say, in general the music tries to be something like that with a little more of a renaissance festival flair, and you might like it. 

is it possible to swap out mp3 files to change the in game music?

For your question, I think it's closer to The witcher in term of music (without the dark aspect of course) (wich by the way is a very good game, I'm still waiting for the 2 to come out... really soon :))

The music files for the game are all MP3 format, so you can replace them with your own files & they should work OK. There are three Music subfolders in Program Files\Stardock Games\Elemental.

What I tend to end up doing after I get bored with a game's built-in music is just to turn it all off and run my own playlist in another app. That way, I can easily switch back to the game's music when I forget how long ago it got boring for me.

For your question, check some gameplay on youtube and listen to the music if possible. Even if it's beta gameplay, music hasn't change.

Good idea Goldmos. Why I didn't think of that? Maybe I was affraid that chatter would drown out the game sound? But I found gameplay movies without chatter.

After listening for about 30 minutes of different tracks I can say that this game's music is very decent. It reminds me of nice Guild Wars music. Nothing brilliant like Age of Wonders 1 or Baldur's Gate. So, yeah, like Fearzone I would't buy a soundtrack. But I wouldn't mute or replace it either. BTW, the game itself is also very decent, but I guess I'll wait for 1.1 and make sure, they fixed it. No free expansions for me then.

I think the music is great.  If you like GC2's music, you'll probably like Elementals...

There are some games, which I missed an opportunity to play. Currently I'm reducing backlog and playing Master of Magic (from gog.com). Next will be Age of Wonders 1 (at the moment I only know the demo version and the music from it). I will have to wait for Gallactic Civilizations 2 and its music for a while then. BTW, do I want to play GC1, or just skip it and start with GC2?

I bought GC1 but put it down pretty quickly because I felt boxed in by only being able to play as the Terrans. I miss some little things that got lost on the way to GC2, like detailed influence info on sectors and the auto-patrol command ships and sensor drones. But mostly GC2 is much more fun for me because it has playable factions that are pretty distinct, especially if you include both expansion packs.

I recently got interested in Stardock games, so sooner or later I'll play GC. I guess I'll skip GC1.

To return to game music - I forgot about Diablo 1 music, especially Tristram Theme (I don't ever remember the rest od the tracks) - I just adore it!

(But frankly it's sometimes hard for me to distinguish excellent music per se from excellent music just for me. Sometimes I just love not the greatest music since is recalling good memories. The same problem is with old games: when I'm asking if (for instance) Master of Magic is good, I never know if the person I'm asking says its fantastic because he/she associates this game with his/hers good old times when everything was simpler, better etc. )

Gosh! Diablo 3 music sucks sooo much. It sounds like a bad Halloween... trick!

I know that Master of Magic is an excellent per se, because I'm playing it right now  . Now I understand better context of EWoM. Kael has a tough nut to crack imo.

I've never played GC1, but I still feel confident recommending going straight to GC2: Ultimate.  If just that you can choose from many races to play.

WOAH... considering the layer tendancy of the music, I'm weirded out by the concept of switching out the music. I played with that during the beta to receive very crazy effects in the menu.  I'm not sure if they still layer it like that though.   It used to be that the files were like 3 different files for a single song.
