A database of modding elements

Could it be eventually possible to build up a database of elements that could be used for modding.

For example, let say I want to have a race of lizard mens in my game and I need a 3d Model.

Maybe somebody already have a lizard men model in his mod.

So instead of searching for all the mod that could have potential content in them, what if there could be a database where people could upload model, music, pictures, tiles, etc. that could be downloaded by modders for their own mod.

I could even see XML content in there. Let say I design various spell book, I upload them in the database and if other people find my spells interesting, they could download the XML and extract the spell they want to use in their mod.

What do you think?

I think that sounds like a great idea. Kyogre currently has "something" close to that with his master mod list. Granted it's not a list of mod resources, but it does list mods that have been made or are being made. People can look at that and see what's there but then have to dig a little deeper to see what all is in the mod they're looking at.

If you could refine it some perhaps. Maybe get a list going of what custom goodies have been made and are available. If you do that, and the devs see fit to help us out, I'll even see about getting it stickied for you ;) . No promises though.

Thats good idea actually, and not only for EWoM, such DB could be cross-game one, listing all "free" assets to use.

Should not be hard to develop one, altho I'm quite limited on my time right now myself.

Well for example if the 3D models used have the same file format, I think yes it could be done. But each game could have file format specific to their game.  In that case it would complicate stuff.

Depending on how modular the mod is it would be good to have the individual elements submitted so that people can do the elements that they are best at, and others can use them.  That might help start off some more community projects like the elf one.
