Border or no border?

I always want the wallpaper to fill the screen, but that is a persoanl preference.  Whatever desktop icons I did have I moved into a couple of Fences.

Haveing said the above I can see where if you don't use Fences then a border (color the compliments the wall) would make it easier to see desktop Icons. 

Here is something you might try also that would give you some added flexibility in the size of the boders.  Try setting a solid color up as your wallpaper, then open up a DX Object like the Core Picture Frame, grab any wall you want and then you can size it for how large you want your borders.

In general I prefer no border (fill the screen) and wallpapers that are subdued enough to still see the icons clearly!

Definitely no border.

Wallpapers without borders...what a concept. Who'da thunk it.

My reply was soley from a user point of view and not a skinner's nor about uploading a wallpaper. 

No border for me

Visually [in a design sense] there are three main problems with borders.....[not in order of significance]

1. They tend to give the impression of less desktop realestate - the screen looks smaller.

2.  Almost always their size and/or placement WON'T suit people's icon/gadget placements so objects will overlap their 'borders' and look decidedly odd.

and

3. All wallpapers already have a border.....it's the one on the monitor screen itself....and EVERYTHING fits quite neatly inside THAT one....;) 

No border 4 me neither. My screen is small enough as it is.

hm, do you know those picture frames with large singlecolored "borders" inside (actually a paper overlay that is put behind the glas, but infront of the actual picture)? the visible area of the photo is pretty much ...say 60% or less of the area of the picture frame. this is mostly used for photos of single objects, portraits and similar stuff. the large monocolored border centers the viewers attention to the object in the middle and with some motifs this might work great. anyway, a computer display is not a picture frame - at least to most of us... never the less i would conclude that if you want to use a border, than do not do things by halves and make the border large! also the border should have sufficient contrast to the motif. if not, you can enframe the motiv with a more contrastful color, but contrary to the border this should be rather small and unobtrusive.
