The Thief who would be a Monarch (AAR)

This is an AAR of my first sandbox game of Elemental. I played the beta a bit, and I've run through the campaign, but if you're looking for good strategy, you'd best look elsewhere.

Also, big flashing warning, this AAR is incomplete, there are only going to be four updates. This is due to the 1.0.6 patch breaking my save. I'd built up these updates as a buffer so as to keep a constant rate of updates, but now I'm afraid that it's all you're getting. Seems a shame to waste all that effort, but it will stop rather abruptly part way through. You have been warned.

Out of character text will be presented in italics.

Episode 1: In the beginning, there was the pickpocket

So… where to start? My name is Muris. I guess that’s a good start.

Muris

I’ve started writing this journal because… well I dunno, I guess it’s the sort of thing that Kings do right? You know, like for the future generations you know? Just as long as no one from the current generations gets hold of it of course because that might turn out a little awkward because I‘m not exactly running entirely on the level here.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m a thief. Or at least, I used to be. Although actually I still am in a way. Anyway, I usually just pick a few pockets, rob some houses, you know, just make off with whatever I can grab. But this one day, some foreign guy tracks me down in a bar to offer me a job. Turns out he wants me to get hold of some old books for him, offers me some silly money for them.

It wasn’t my usual sort deal, but I didn’t really care one way or the other. He pointed me at the house where the books were held, and so off I went. It went well enough at first, I broke in all quiet like and found the books the man wanted. But when I picked them off the shelf I felt… something. Something weird. A sort of static charge. Took me by surprise, and I dropped the books.

Did I mention that I was on top of a ladder? Yeah, well I was on top of a ladder. So when I drop the books I try to grab them, but that doesn’t go quite to plan and so I end up falling off the ladder. Definitely not all quiet like any more.

So some old guy runs in and he does not look happy. I’m still a little stunned from my fall, so I’m just mumbling trying desperately to come up with some explanation. Then I mention what happened with the book, and everything changes. Oh boy, that has got to be the understatement of the century right there because EVERYTHING changed right then. Next thing I know, the old man is on his knees in front of me looking at me like I’m a god or something, and he’s babbling all about channelers and prophecy and a chosen one. Then he invites me to stay in his house, or rather he begs me to stay.

Well, I had no clue what was going on, but I figured that if I hung around I might be able to sneak off with the books a bit later when the old man wasn’t paying attention. Not that I’m saying that I couldn’t have taken him, you know, just that beating up old men isn’t my style. I‘m a thief, but I’m not a monster. Besides, it’d been a while since I’d had a chance to sleep in a real nice bed.

When I woke the next morning, I tell you I got the shock of my life. The old man was sitting there watching me. Now that was creepy. But it was in no way as creepy as the fact that he was not alone. I had a whole room full of crazy people trying to worship me.

Fortunately, I finally got something resembling an explanation. These people were all refugees, from all over. They called themselves ‘The Wanderers’, and they had some sort of prophecy to do with finding a channeler who would lead them and help them build a nation. Apparently, my reaction to the books was some sort of sign that had convinced them that I was that man.

The Wanderers

There was a bug with the faction editor which reset that description to its default, so I had to edit the xml document manually to get it in there.

Needless to say, my first reaction was to get out of there as soon as possible. But then I got to thinking- this could be a pretty sweet deal. I mean, countries make loads of money right? Taxes and the like? So I play along for a while, wait for the money to roll in, then who’s going to stand in the way of the King making a quick trip to the treasury? I could probably order them to load it onto a cart themselves and then just ride off into retirement!

So I accepted. And that’s how I found myself wandering in a field, trying to find somewhere to found a Kingdom. MY Kingdom.

It begins...

Thanks for the AAR I am looking forward to the updates. To bad the patch broke the saved games, but thank goodness for the patch.

Thanks for the reply, I was worried noone had read this :p

Episode 2: Kingdom Building for Dummies

So frankly I have no idea about a good place to set up a kingdom, but personally my eye was drawn to this.

GOLD

There’s gold in them hills. Now I’m not a miner, but hey, that’s what subjects are for right? There’s more gold nearby too, so I can’t think of a much better place to start building my treasury than right here. I’m not one for flashy names, so I name it the same as my last hideout.

The Den

So the Wanderers  get to work putting together ‘The Den’. Apparently there’s quite a lot of them spread around the surrounding countryside, but it’s going to take some time to gather them all up. In time this’ll be a big city, but for now it barely qualifies as a village.

Now, I was hoping that this whole ’King’ thing would be a sort of figurehead role, but apparently they really do expect me to be deciding on absolutely everything. I ask them to build a gold mine, but apparently they don’t have enough resources to do that right now, so I set them to work building a workshop instead, which they can apparently use to build whatever it is that is needed to start mining.

GettingStarted

By this point, I’ve already a little tired of all this ruling. I don’t know how long I’m going to be able to keep this up. I need to get out of here. Fortunately, nobody seems to be making any effort to stop me leaving. I mean, I am a king I guess. Of course, I can’t expect to go for too long without meeting another loony.

Janusk

Yes, yes, channeler, chosen one, great destiny, whatever. Still, he seems a little less crazy than the Wanderers and he claims to have a good head for figures. I’ll keep him around as my head tax collector or something.

Now, back to what I do best. Thieving. Or, in this case, looting. I figure that straight out thievery probably isn’t  a very kingly thing to be doing, and I should probably be careful I don’t tip these guys off that I’m not quite what they think I am. Still, if someone is dead, it’s not really thievery at all is it? I mean they don’t need it any more. With the world the way it is, it doesn’t take me too long to find some unfortunate soul with no more need of his belongings.

PhatLewt

Jackpot! 20 Gildar for my new Kingdom. Although wasn’t the kingdom supposed to be generating money for me, rather than the other way around? Oh well, I guess these things take time…

Tumbleweed blows through the Elemental Fiction forum. I guess people are too busy moaning in the other forums. Well unfortunately for you, ignoring me will NOT make me go away!

Episode 3- Exclamation Mark

After a hard day of kinging and adventuring, I decide to make a quick stop at a local tavern. I bring Janusk along for some conversation. He’s a little posh, but it’s nice to have someone else around who at least treats me as a human being instead of a god on earth.

Pub

In the inn (ha!) there’s some old guy blubbing about how he lost his horse or something. Gets me to thinking… what’s a king without a horse? The guy says I can keep it if I ‘rescue’ it. Not that he has much choice in the matter, frankly.

On my way back, I drop in to see how the Den is coming along. The mine still isn’t ready yet, but the town is starting to build up. The old man from before insists that I sit down and take a look at those books again. I decide to humour him, but then I go and surprise myself by mastering a couple of the spells. Maybe there is something in this channeler thing after all…

Learning to Spell

I go for a teleportation and a haste spell. Useful for getting myself out of trouble.

With my subjects appeased for now, I head out to where the old man said he’d lost his horse. Unfortunately, it appears that he wasn’t exaggerating when he said it needed rescuing…

Round 1- FIGHT!

Normally I’d turn and run in a situation like this, but I don’t think that would impress Janusk much. For some reason, I’m anxious not to disappoint him.

Take that

And that

Fortunately, they aren’t as tough as they look, though Janusk does most of the work. I really need to get myself a weapon… But the important thing is, I’ve snagged myself a sweet ride!

Gee up

I feel a little awkward riding with Janusk running along behind, but a king can’t exactly go around sharing his horse now can he?

Riding home feeling rather proud of myself, I’m pleased to see that construction has finally started on the mine:

Home sweet home

Looks like things are finally falling into place…

Episode 4- Meet the Neighbours

First thing’s first, I grab myself a weapon.

Armed and ready

It’s not much of a weapon, though. Time to do my King thing, and order my loyal subjects to get me some better equipment.

War! (Research)

Not a moment too soon, either. It seems I’m not the only guy running around with a bunch of naïve followers in these parts.

Hi there

He doesn’t seem particularly friendly. Not to mention he seems a bit more comfortable with the whole ‘ruling’ thing.

Looking back now with a bit more experience, I think this guy is actually only a minor race. Oh well, Muris doesn't know that.

If I’ve learnt anything in this world, it’s that if you can’t protect yourself, you’re as good as dead. Fortunately…

Ruffian

We’re ready to start building ourselves a proper army to do just that. They asked me to pick out the gear myself, can't these people do anything without my direct input? I just tell them to throw on everything they can carry. They look more like a thug than a soldier really, but I can't help but feel that's somewhat appropriate.

The final result

My grand kingdom, as it stands today. The first gold mine is now complete, and the second is under construction. The rest of the town is looking pretty good as well. It’s strange, but I do take a strange sense of pride in it.

Which is just as well, because it's the last thing I saw before the update broke my save file.

I read through this and enjoyed the Thief, Muris, who would become a King. You put a lot of work into this and was wondering what would happen to good-ole' Muris. Would he eventually become that "King" or would his society remain that of thieves and general villainy?

My plan was originally to use landmark in-game events (e.g. the death of his first unit, birth of his first child) to slowly develop him from a selfish nobody into a great and powerful king. It would probably have taken me forever though, as its suprising how long it takes to type out just a few lines of text for a couple of turns of game time!
