I think I am going to go back and play MOM again.

And wait for this game to be complete.  It gets old not being told why something doesn't work or not being able to figure out what something is for.

Destiny's slivers?  What are they for?  Why can one champion equip it and others can't?  Why doesn't the map building tool have a paint brush instead of a stamp?

I'm thinking I'll come back to the game once it hits version 1.1

I don't know I think it's kind of fun to not know things in a world that has lost everything.  It seems pretty good to me now, although I wish the beginning of the game went slower.  World falls to ruin and then before you know it kingdoms and empire influence covers the map.

Plus it's fun to watch how things improve and change with each patch, really makes it feel like a little bit of a different experience with every play through.

I'm still giving EWOM a little more time, but agree I want to revisit MOM. Do you know if DOS Box works any better with Win7 than it did with Vista? I couldn't get MoM to run in vista at all, hoping my luck is better under Win 7

Unofficial MOM patch ftw it's not made by the guy that ran the website, it's done by  kyrub who made the unofficial MOO patch, the thing is the the forums are down for some reason on where kryub orifinally hosted the patch (check the readme for details).

I've also run it on a windows7 64bit machine and even a windows 2000 machine using dosbox and of course the gog version comes with dosbox already set up properly.

I never quit playing Master of Magic. ;)

I suppose this is a good place to reminisce about MoM. And about Stardock attempting to publish a sequel to Master of Magic.

Might and Magic Heroes Kingdom just came out. Free to play. I want Elemental to be great, but it's getting frustrating. I might just go play this and pretend I payed for that instead.

I still can't get get MOM to work with my soundblaster pro and it's been like 15 years.  WHERE IS THE PATCH!

This!

Nowadays every new release of a game is attended by some complainers who are crying for their prequels or any older game similar to it. This becomes more and more tedious. Why can't you accept that Elemental is a NEW game with a NEW engine and not your OLD (and in most cases very far from perfect) MoM? I take it as my pre-poster: Goodbye and if you want to get rid of your Elemental copies I take them...some of my friends would really like to give it a try.

I think Elemental has more potential..  but right now MOM's battles are much more interesting and balanced than Elemental's.  Magic means something.  Units have unique traits (there are a few in Elemental, but unless it's a magical damage ability it's pretty much meaningless right now).  There are no strengths vs. weaknesses to consider.  Enemy movement in tactical combat is so simplistic and easy to predict that you often win battles you probably shouldn't have.  And magic is so broken that it's pointless to use.. My channeller's spell abilities and damage are dwarfed by the fire elemental I summon with my lvl 3 spell.  Enchantment and Summoning spells are great... the rest are broken..

If only Stardock had actually made a sequal to Master of Magic rather than dart off into uncharted territory.  I think ELemental would be in much better shape if they had stuck to more of the core elements of the classic.

And then we would have lots of people complaining about it not being innovative enough or similar stuff. Feels like Dawn of War 2 case or Starcraft 2 case. Both opposites, both with detractors.

Yep, they most certainly would.  But in the end, I think a Master of Magic "clone" would have been a lot more stable than what we've got at the moment.

As derivative as an all out MoM clone would have been, I'd have heartily embraced it...  MoM is one of those rare games I still play to this day.  Other than World of Warcraft (which I've been playing for 7 years this October) it's the longest semi-continuous gaming experience I've had.

Don't get me wrong as I'd have prefer Elemental to have it's own distinct flavor, but as of the current build it's just a very bland sandbox.  It has tremendous potential both from official channels and dedicated modders...  it just has a LONG way to go.

Disagree 100%.

I already have MoM - don't need another one.

agreed there, if elemental was just MOM then what's the point?

The way it is now means both games are still enjoyable, take the xcom clones for example, too much like xcom but not as good so they aren't really worth getting unless you are a diehard xcom addict.  I would rather games be difference from eachother then more of the same or else the 4x genre will turn into the FPS genre with a couple of standouts but mainly just unimaginative clones.

There are elements that EWOM does and can do well, such as questing. There are elements that EWOM does poorly, like the whole unit customization thing. They should have kept the core elements that worked and then innovated on new ones.

Honestly, I'm going to think twice about the next Stardock game I buy. I am disappointed with the fact that they don't understand how to make unique units/techs/buildings/spells. Bland customization and a bunch of percentages are a recurring theme in their games. I don't like that.

EDIT: If you don't mind what I see as blandness, it's okay too. It's a preference.

If you want a change of pace I recommend Age of Wonders:Shadow Magic.  The sequel plays very similar to Elemental but unfortunately less units.  It is an older game but one that got me into 4x rpg games.

Wow, I haven't played Age of Wonders in years. Totally forgot about that game. Never got AoW II or Shadow Magic, though.

The AoW games are no longer produced, and you can only find them as used games. However, a news notice dated August 4, on the Triumph Studios website, said the AoW series will be coming soon as a digital release. No release date was given, and no idea if they'll be on Good Old Games, or packaged for GamersGate, Impulse, Steam, etc.

Good news AndonSage!

AoW appears to be "coming soon" to Steam!

Did you read all the comments in that thread? People are hoping it's not just coming out on Steam, because they hate that service. They want to see it on Impulse, or GamersGate, or GoG :) I'd prefer to see the Age of Wonders Trilogy coming out on Impulse or GamersGate, myself. Those are the two services I use.

Anyway, time to get back to Elemental, I spent too much time in the forum already

GoG is an amazing website, thanks for posting that. They have Blood....BLOOD! I am having flashbacks to my fps days lol. So awesome. Bunch of games on their I may check out...Arcanum I must buy.
