I think that if your character doesn't carry any weapons (s)he should be able to wear 10 rings.. if the character is wielding a sword and shield (s)he should be limited to 4 rings or something like that. 

Then it's an advantage to some characters to not use a sword/shield.

Please, not silly D&D limits... XD Four would seem fine. Maybe six and I don't think that more than 8 would be wise. And in addition to the limitation of number of rings by Champion/Sovereign, (some) rings could be limited to 1 of each type.
