A Preview of Elemental Beta 3-B

image

Beta 3-B is the big one. It’ll be the first beta build that should start to feel like a game.

First off, there are the major features being enabled in the public beta:

  1. Tactical Battles
  2. Master Quests
  3. Near Final technology tree
  4. Near final city improvement list
  5. Tons of game play tweaks
  6. Lots of bug fixes

This beta will start to show just how much impact the beta community has had on the game.  I’ll be doing a video preview in the next day or so.

Coming up: Tactical Battle Preview

Seconded!

Any word on if we can add special abilities to units from the UI, or do we have to mod them to do that? (eg if I wanted to make a soldier with a "whirlwind" ability where I already modded the whirlwind ability in. Can I build a solider and assign that skill to him, or do I have to mod a custom unit?)

Mmmm, melting faces with fireballs in tactical battles....

You guys are really rolling 3, 3A, and soon 3B?

I thought sleep was a necessity. I'm starting to wonder if Stardock was the right CO Name.. Insomniacs might have made more sense =P j.k Thanks for the update! Looking really forward to 3-B.

Sleep is not something game developers get much of during crunch time. I've got a friend working in the industry who is at that point right now, and his schedule is pretty insane. I tend to refer to him as a slave labourer because the hours he's working would be illegal for me to do. :P

Hey Brad... I'm concerned that we won't see 10,000 man armies anymore. Is that the case?

There won't be 10,000 unit armies in v1.0. It'll probably top out at hundreds instead of thousands in a given fight. We'll look at increasing the limit in the future.

tactical battles... it just sounds... right. \o/   definitely can't wait to see my once-rather-useless magic rip them apart.

Though i won't be able to hear it since my sound driver screws up the beta... so i can't hear the amazing music you guys have put on there

Can't wait. :) Thanks Brad for keeping us so well informed throughout this process. It is very much appreciated.

OOoooo, tactical battles. Can't wait to see them :-). Very curious to see how the Empire plays now as well. Seemed to need a Lot of work done in 3-A. Also.... 3B at around the same time Starcraft2 Phase2 stops. The timing! Perfection :-). Though SC2 beta just doesn't have the interaction of this. As somebody who's worked as a software engineer but never ever on a video-game it's awesome seeing how things come together :-).

Dang. Such a tease Brad! Can't wait to see what you guys have done :)

I have not pre-ordered this game yet but after 3B with tempting battles I simply do not think I will be able to resist any more.

I know i say this all the time but....OMG cant wait!

Well .... if a unit won't go higher than 20+ people, and in a given battle we can see HUNDREDS of people ... sounds cool to me!

(as in tactical battles can be "big" ie a lot of individual units and a large map)

Thank goodness.

Unless companys upgrade into into something larger (Platoons?)  I can't imagine tactical battles of 10,000 units... That's like moving 500 units around on screen.:time:

Yea, we've played around with all kinds of combinations over the past few months to see what is the most fun.  The larger ones make great screenshots but are just not very fun to play or manage.

10,000 guys require 1000 gildar per turn to maintain.
