BETA 3: REPORTING BUGS

BETA 3: REPORTING BUGS

READ THIS!

We're seeing a lot of beta tester bug reports that are not following the reporting guidelines.

As a practical matter, there is only one thing we really need and that is the crash file.

In your c:\programdata\stardock\elemental - war of magic directory are zip files when the game crashes.

Inside those zip files is the debug.err and the .dmp file that when we load it, will actually let us open the game and see the exact place in the code it crashed.

Screenshot of the directory:

http://screencast.com/t/MzE5MmQ1Yz

If you're running Windows XP, it's in the hidden \documents and settings\ directory thing.

Use DropBox (http://www.dropbox.com) to share these files.

There's about 3 separate crash bugs in beta 3 that once fixed should dramatically improve the stability.  I'm not going anywhere for the 4th of July so if I can fix them, I'll put up a new EXE for people to try but I can't do much without those DMP files.

Call me what you want to call me, stupid or paranoïd, but I downloaded Dropbox yesterday and stopped short of using it when I read the Terms of Service and found sentences like:

- YOU CONSENT TO ALLOW DROPBOX TO ACCESS YOUR COMPUTER...

- You acknowledge that if you wish to protect your transmission of data and/or files to Dropbox, it is your responsibility to use a secure encrypted connection to communicate with and/or utilize the Site, Files and Services.

- Your access to and use of the Site, Content, Files and Services and is at your own risk. Dropbox will have no responsibility for any harm to your computer system, loss or corruption of data, or other harm that results from your access to or use of the Site, Content, Files or Services.

- YOU SPECIFICALLY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT DROPBOX IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE DEFAMATORY, OFFENSIVE OR ILLEGAL CONDUCT OF OTHER USERS OR THIRD PARTIES AND THAT THE RISK OF INJURY FROM THE FOREGOING RESTS ENTIRELY WITH YOU.

HELL, NO!

I won't neither allow nor acknowledge anything! For me, all those disclaimers seem just to say "Allow us to bypass your firewall but we won't do any efforts to prevent someone to take opportunity of this situation!" :(O

In these times of hackers, virus, trojans, industrial spying, identity thefts and such, I prefer to limit the access to my computer when I can. Better paranoïd than sorry!

A shame that Pastebin doesn't work anymore, it was just click/paste. No risk at all. Isn't there something similar that we can use? Should I just post my debugg.err in my threads? Can't we just upload or email the notepad file?

how did those other people add the debug file to there reply post? that seemed like a good idea (neither dropbox nor pastebin works for me :annoyed: )

I can't find the link to send you the crash files -jeremy Sr.

I found the files by doing a search of my computer for the files. -jeremy sr.

WARNING I HAVE FIGURED OUT THESE ARE NOT THE FILES YOUR LOOKING FOR:you need to goto control panel folder options and enable the 'show hidden files' to find the right files.

Was having issues opening EoW. Seems Impulse was trying to get an update and failing. It resolved itself (EoW) anyways but now I have had a strange twist.

Crashed -Bad  Zip below.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8370296/Elemental0_806-2010-07-14T11-24-47-870.zip

Reloaded - Good (but)

During the reload of the Map and Elements, I suddenly captured, without any moves/clicks taken, a Fallen Town I did not even know existed until the Pop up showed. I had taken another town earlier before the first crash.

I have added both crashes to see if the anomaly can be detected.

Screenie - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8370296/Elemental_Reload_glitch.jpg

Another note of interest. After this same reload my Sovereign once again had the ability to create another Kingdom. The ICON is re-lit.

Yup. Whatever fools ruined fogbugz for us good citizens put me out of the serious reporting crowd because I'm also 'whatever' about third-party crap and 'free' online services.

Here's hoping that Stardock does well enough, soon enough that they can afford to run something like fogbugz with logins that can keep out the riffraff.

There are so many free website hosting companies out there (in fact most isps offer them) that I am surprised that people don't just upload it to their site and put a link to it here.  Little more work to get it setup then dropbox, but afterwards you have a site.

Just a thought.

Two of those crashes (the third link, and one of the other two, I forget which) involve exploring the encyclopedia after finishing researching a tech.  I was looking around seeing what the unlocked buildings did, and the game CTD'd.  When I load the autosave for that turn, it shows the school as having leveled up, but without a specific tech from that level. (i.e. in the third link I'd just finished Level 5 Civilization but only have 4 techs to show for it).

Edit: also crashes when you hit "continue" in the tech screen.  I noticed that this is in the known bugs list, but figured I'd add a few cases.  Here's 3 more of the same crash from the last hour:

Now I'll admit I am not the most tech savy person here but I have downloaded dropbox put my .dmp files up there now how exactly can I get a hold of that new .exe frogboy was talking about?

While I would like to give you a copy of my .err files, as I have a bunch of them, sadly mcafee reports dropbox as spyware, and I would rather not install it. Do you have a more secure location to upload files to? What about adding an attachement option to the forums?

You can find my v0.90 crashes at http://tinyurl.com/embugz (rar file containing the zips). I'm not entirely sure how I managed to come up with the two first logs. I am sure about the last one, though. I that case I just bought new armor for my leader and tried swapping it on -> crash.

Some of the starting character have too many good attribuyes to be duplicated in a custom character. They shpuld exactly use up the available customization points.

The starting kingdoms should also be checked if and when kingdom customization is added nack.

Well, when you load a Save, the menu disappears and the background moves while its loading ... (default)

currently, once the menu disappears, if the background freezes you know its (actually Working!) .... cause if it keeps moving then that means your load has failed. And it will just sit there perpetually background scrolling, and it sometimes takes a lot of effort to stop the program (and sometimes its easy to stop the program) ... but either way, you have to completely stop the program.

Just saying. This "load failure" happens about 60+% of the time.

How long does Stardock need our dump files for crashes in our  DropBox?  (2Weeks? 3Weeks?)
