Civ V game discussion

Civ V game discussion

PLEASE: No Steamworks discussion here. There's already a thread for that. Let's try to keep this thread to gameplay. :)

Gamespot has some E3 coverage on Civ V. Some of it is still pretty thin, but I like what I'm seeing so far. Particularly now that there's a more visual look at how the one unit per hex & ranged combat systems will work (along with zone of control!), it seems like defending a border will be a lot more practical now.

Also some neat thingsa bout how the AI can react to units massing on the border, how city-states impact gameplay (such as the ability to join alliances with them, or liberate ones others conquered), and the replacement of annoying modal dialogs with notifications.

Any other thoughts?

I'm passing until a demo is release. If it's dumbed down I don't want to waste my time/money on it.

The demo comes out on the 21st. Give that a try and see how it runs.

Or maybe it's just good? People actually do put out good games now and then. :|

A fair bit of information is out now. Here's a list of unique units, being done as a countdown. There's still a few not on the list, but most are explained.

Here's a thread with a bunch of info on normal units, and Civs and their special bonuses.

And finally, here's a site with info and analysis on almost everything. Enjoy!

Yesssssss @ giant death robot. Looking forward to a polished game with day 1 multiplayer. O:)

So there are the civilization bonuses, that's what I was most interested in because it's new and it makes them a little more distinct then before. As to be expected some definitely seem better or more interesting then others, though obviously hard to evaluate without playing the actual game. Certainly the game would have to have changed a lot before extra rewards for beating sea barbarians would be something I cared about!

Shacknews - 4.5/5

All in all, Civilization V is an amazing game. Firaxis has changed so many things, but manages to keep the feel of what makes this a Civilization title. There's a major level of polish across all facets of the game and it is absolutely gorgeous. It can be a bit of a resource hog as games progress, but it won't require a top of the line rig. Series veterans will find welcome changes and newcomers should enjoy learning Civ in this version.
Destructoid - 9.5/10

Civilization V makes huge advances to the series that do nothing but enhance the essential experience. Improvements to the user interface and AI at all levels result in it being more approachable for newcomers without losing any of the strategic depth that long-time fans crave. It vastly improves combat, making the micro-level gameplay both more complex and entertaining. It trims all the fat, leaving only decision-making, strategic planning, and the sheer joy of crushing your enemies. Civ V is the pinnacle of the franchise to date.
Wired - 8/10

In a sea of shooters with pounding soundtracks and frenetic gameplay, Civilization V is one of the few games to challenge players’ minds — to have them sit back and analyze situations methodically. If Halo: Reach is heaven on earth for twitch-gamers everywhere, then Civilization V is the thinking man’s paradise.
Gaming Nexus - 5/5

Civilization V is, once again, going to consume countless hours of my life in turn-based bliss. With the "boardgame" feel and the slick, polished features, I know I'm in for many sleep-deprived mornings. Fans of the series, or turn-based 4X games in general, will have a blast with this for a long time to come. And while it might be a little daunting to newcomers, Civilization V is also a great place for those who might want to wet their feet in the 4X pool.

Joystiq - 5/5
quote:
Whether you're a veteran of the whole series, a convert from Revolution or someone totally new to the franchise, understand this: Civilization 5 is a game that needed to happen. For a game so very, very large, it delivers everything in an easy to understand package no matter what route you take to playing it. The core Civilization experience is still there, but it's like an efficiency expert came in and streamlined everything that had gotten clunky with the series. It's a "friendly" strategy game. Can one even call a strategy game friendly? Well, I just did.
The Escapist - 5/5

My favorite Civilization to date. Hex tiles and no stacking makes combat fun and more tactical. The new systems work incredibly well without altering what makes the game Civilization. Civ V is an excellent game.

TBH, I just stole a few posts from another forum I frequent, haha. But that's what the internet it. Spread of information~

I'll keep all the scores in one post though. And if anyone wants to put them in the OP, that'd be fine, too.

It's "liberated". ;)

The manual has been released early. I'd suggest saving it rather then opening it in a browser, as it's quite large (233 pages, 25MB).

I recant my earlier post, after reading the manual and PC Gamer review, my pre-order is downloading as I type this. Combat sounds fan-freaking-tastic.

1. This manual is the most impressive I have ever seen. Being version 1.0 implies it will get updated from time to time. Add to that the Civilopedia in game and all the other in game info goodness. Sigh. I recanted on waiting for the demo. Mine is now downloaded and ready to go.

2. Apologies if someone already mentioned it. But there is a nice 28 minute video of the live stream that Gamespot did yesterday available.

That's a nice manual. I wish it verified a few more things on MP, but maybe that's just my new response to MP after Paradox and Stardock MP disasters. I will assume it's the same as it has always been, lots of options and robust.

So the manual finally answers my question about how research beekers are generated. It's interesting that it's completely tied to population now and not in any way related to gold/trade. It will change the game a lot to be able to have gold to spend without having to give up research to do so, as well as by potentially being able to suffer through crippling upkeep for awhile without science grinding to a halt.

If you have questions about MP post them. Some of info is already available.

Some info which isnt in this thread (AFAIK):

PBEM and Hotseat will be available some time after release

Default MP lobby setting is for simultaneous turns, but "normal" turns are also option.

Steamcloud support (for 10 saves) was also confirmed.

Well it's difficult to post a question about what has not changed. I've been playing Civ for... a long time and certain things just seem "normal" to me at this point.

Typically how I play is with 1-3 people as separative civs who do not start as team play but eventually team up when we "find" each other and cooperate against the AI. So it's team play without actually being in a team from the get go. As long as we can do that, have the AI to play against, I am pretty much happy. Having the AI in MP seems available from the one page on MP. Being able to team up and win together, maybe not. Or in many cases we just don't compete directly but there is still one winner.

We are typically not local, and I also have a Steam account so I am a bit aware of how it works on that front. Basically if MP is setup up like Civ IV, then that has all we want.

I don't want to imagine the marks of Civ V when it gets released and gets the 0-day patch :p
