E3 conference

Is ther anyone besides me watching this besides me and some other game design students? I just sit and dream of the day I can be standing up there demonstrating that latest gams and gaming technology.]

Personally I think that E3 is just that tad bit pointless and needs to go away for a very long time. I mean I'm all up for the show of new tech for games, it's just that at this point I would rather not go for the ultra realism of todays gaming market. I mean who wants realism when you can go across the stars with a little Italian plumber.

In other words you want more fantasy as much of the games they show aren't

I generally don't watch E3, just read about it later; if there's only a couple games I'm interested in, I don't want to sit and watch demos of other junk. I'm particularly excited about Nintendo unveiling the 3DS. If they can actually pull of decent looking 3D without the glasses, that would just be incredible. Plus, if the rumors are true that is is more powerful than the current gen of consoles... wow (I doubt it actually is, but it would be impressive, even more so if they can keep the price down).

Ahhhh! Stupid Microsoft... I got my 360 Elite about a year ago, had to buy the stupid wireless adaptor, and it was less than a month before they announced the price cuts, and now they do this. I hate them a lot right now.

But on the plus side, they finally caught up to everyone else and gave it built in wi-fi. So it took them how many years to do what my first generation DS does, that only cost $150?

Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a hater, I'm just upset that I so much extra money on my Elite when if I had known I could have waited just a little bit longer...:'(

some of the stuff on the kinect is fucking amazing.

Personally, I found Microsoft's conference to be totally underwhelming in every respect.  No reveals, no major announcements, and nearly everything shown that wasn't related to Kinect had been known prior to the show.  I understand that they wanted to give Kinect the spotlight, but the stuff with Kinect, apart from the Dashboard stuff, just looks like controller free versions of Wii titles or games released years ago.  Not a single title announced lived up to the potential of the device that was hinted at last year.  It's very impressive technology used to simply replicate what Nintendo have been doing for years and frankly, for the price tag, it needed to be so much more.
Choosing to dedicate the majority of your E3 Show - where those soley interested in games attend - to a device designed to appeal to non-gamers and expect to walk away with positive impressions is simply a bad move.  Appealing to current 360 gamers - most of whom would already own a Wii to play their casual games on if the wanted to play Casual Games - is a bad sell, and trying to sell a 360 + Kinect to casual gamers who don't already own a 360 is a bad sell when the Wii does just as much for half the price.  They needed to demonstrate how Kinect was going to appeal to everyone, how it was going to change the way we play games, not force us to watch people playing casual games badly.  They had one chance to show what Kinect can do, and failed in nearly every regard.  Sorry Microsoft, I honestly expect Kinect to fail badly after what was shown.

Luckily Ubisoft was around to show Microsoft how to fucking bomb at E3.  Their Lazer Tag game is currently the laughing-stock of the internet and frankly it's the most painfully bad reveal of any E3 I've ever seen.  After the PR disaster that is their Always-On DRM, Ubisoft needed something to bring them back.  They managed to fail harder than anyone else.

I hope the 3DS is as good as Nintendo want it to be, because so far E3 2010 is the worst one of this generation.

Best part is that E3 hasn't even technically started yet. Tuesday is the first "offical" day, but some companies like to get a jump start.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. If Microsoft wants to take part of Nintendo's market, which they obviously do, they're going about it all wrong. The $150 pricetag for Kinect alone proves that. Add $200 for the basic Xbox360 and $60 for a Kinect compatible game, and the Wii is looking even better, especially when you consider none of it's games go over $50. If they wanted to be competitive, Kinect should be under $100 at least, probably less.

Nintendo proved that targeting casual gamers+low pricetag+not quite as amazing hardware can be very successful. MS is trying to do the target the casual gamers part, but they forgot about the rest of that equation. They went for cutting edge technology, which means high cost, which will ultimately drive people away.

All that, huh? I've honestly never paid attention to much of E3, heard about it after fact, sure. For me, if a game looks good, interesting, etc. I'll give it a look, try it out, but my opinion is usually formed from the first few seconds when it comes to inanimate objects. If its quirky, random, awesome etc. it grabs my attention.

The laser tag was not a bad idea, I for one never go out to play it, so I thought it was a bit of nice idea. If played right kenict ca be a nice money maker.  What I was disappointed most about is what the fuck did nintendo do to KIRBY!

The legend of zelda is a nice game.

on another note, zeh; you are kind of wrong, the whole wireless wii is what everyone has been waiting on.

So apperently the 3DS actually does work as advertised. Now we just need a price and release date. And looking at the release titles... wow, I'm impressed.

And now I'm watching the Sony press confrence. Seems to me like it's mostly a whole lot of subtle and not so subtle jabs at Nintendo and Microsoft. So far, I am very unimpressed with Move. Yay Wii rip-off! And look, a Sports Champion game! And a demo of Tiger Woods. First of all, why are they still using him to market anything? And second of all, how many more motion golf games to we need?

Some of the demo videos show people playing with two lollipo... I mean Move controllers. So they're going to make you buy two of them to play some games? And they're $50 each...

Oh, and speaking of rip-offs, Sorcery totally screamed "Harry Potter" to me.

3D for the PS3 is almost a good idea, but you still need to buy a 3D TV, so add a couple hundred dollars in addition to the overly expensive PS3. Not to mention the 3DS one-uped them. Portable, no glasses, and probably a couple hundrend dollars cheaper.

Overall, I'd say Sony's is much more underwleming than Microsoft's. At least MS showed off some genuinely new tech, even if it is also over priced.

EDIT: Little Big Planet 2 does look pretty good, though. Not surprised at all that they're announcing a subscription service.

EDIT 2: mmm, Portal 2. How much did Sony have to pay Valve to get that in their conference?

EDIT 3: Holy ****! There might be a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the 3DS! http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101392-Nintendo-Remaking-Legendary-Zelda-Ocarina-of-Time-For-3DS

Well, I've managed to watch them all now.

Holy crap, Nintendo is back in a big way.  I'm almost tempted to pick up a Wii now, though I'll still probably not, however they've sold me on the 3DS completely.  The line up of Third Party Support is massive and from the general impressions I've read it sounds like Nintendo have freaking nailed the 3D and use it to create a truley unique and immersive experience that their competitors will, once again, be left scrambling to catch up to.  It's got everything I want and more, and if the price is right I'll add yet another Nintendo hand-held to my collection.

I thought Microsoft was going to be the loser this year, however luckily Sony swept in there and showed them how to do it properly.  While nowhere near as laughingly bad as Ubisoft's piss-poor attempt at a conference, Sony underwhelmed on everything.  Instead of showing the world what Playstation 3 is all about and how the next year is going to be a great year to own a Playstation, they instead detailed what Nintendo and Microsoft are doing on their consoles and then showed their efforts to replicate that as best as they could.  Playstation, as a brand, just lost some serious points.  They're just copying everyone else, and badly.  How sad.

Microsoft, in respect to the other conferences, didn't really do anything wrong, however they didn't excel.  They're the middleman in this generation, and they almost seem to be wanting to keep that position.

And Valve signing up with PS3?  Jesus, let the Valve monopoly begin.  How long before Console games need an internet connection to 'activate'?  I'm quite seriously concerned and shaken by this annoucement.

3DS version of the Ocarina of Time has been confirmed. Please, please give us a release date and pricing now. There are so many games to add to my wishlist now:drool:

Well at this point they have absolutely no hope of catching Nintendo, unless Kinect turns out to be as popular as owning a PC, which probably won't happen. So the only place they have to go is down, which I can't imagine they want to do:P . But it certainly helps that Sony has made every effort to gimp themselves this generation of consoles.

After looking at all the info flooding around regarding the 3DS, it's literally the most impressive console I've ever seen.  If Nintendo can secure half of the titles hinted at for launch in 2011, they'll have one of the greatest launch line ups of all time.  It's strange when a new Handheld is vastly more impressive than the major consoles, and packs games that look to be a lot more fun!  Mario Kart 3DS?  Sign me the hell up!

Don't say 2011! There's still a little hope for a release later this year, although the fact that they haven't given us a date yet to me implies that probably won't happen:P

Even though I don't console game anymore i still pay some attention to E3 for all the new gimmicks and such. The gimmicks though were the downside this year. At this point the consoles are getting old, sales rates are slowing and obviously MS and Sony have no new real hardware to show. Instead we get Kinect with things like Kinect Sports(sound familiar?) and an almost blatant ripoff of the Wiimote in Sony's Move. Nintendo is the only one that seems on the ball showing not only new hardware, but an upcoming lineup of all their winning franchises. I wish Sega were still around. They may have had some outlandish and undoable(for the time)tech, but at least they weren't showing things that have been done for years and calling it new.
