Welcome to our community.  Your best bet for finding new players is probably on standard vanilla Sins.  There are a number of new players there since the base game was on sale for $4 recently.

the vast majority of players appear to be quite experienced and practically impossible to beat for a new player such as i. when did you people start playing and winning games?

I've decided to try my hand at multiplayer again, too. I played one game, once, like a year ago. Maybe more. It wasn't a horrible experience--more like neutral. There were 2 other players, and nobody said much. It was FFA. One guy quit when he realized how big the other guy's fleet was attacking him, and after a few battles I conceded since I was clearly going to lose. The guy who won wasn't too keen on giving pointers, but he wasn't rude.

It's just I'm very iffy on playing with strangers because of the simple fact that so many people will be jerks online just because they can be.

My handle is Ratbreath, or maybe just Rat. I forget.

Well. I got on Ironclad just after posting that. After about 10 minutes, someone appeared and asked to play 1v1. I told him I was a noob so he offered us v AI. Sure, I says. My ping was a bit iffy but I figured it was worth a shot.

As soon as we start playing it becomes apparent that he has it set on 'faster'. ARG. I'm not used to that, and I was lagging to begin with. Maybe that's what he normally plays on? We played for a little while, and I was sort of starting to get used to the speed when I lost my internet connection. I have satellite, and I lose connection every time it rains.

:\

So next time I guess I should check the forecast, and make sure the game isn't set to superduperfast. I don't like rushing through things. Especially when I'm dealing with lag issues. Bleh.

You must have been on Diplomacy.  Yes, most games are played with the Fast or Faster setting.  Faster feels pretty fast when you're first getting used to it.  It slows down later in the game once lots of ships are out.  The benefit of the faster speed setting is that it reduces the amount of time needed to play a game online, which, when you're talking about games that could last 2 hours, is a concern.

Do note that there are a couple jerks out there, but don't take them seriously and don't let them chase you off the playground.  It's a great game once you learn it and can hold your own.

That sucks.  Do you live out in the sticks where satellite broadband is your only option?  I've always been under the impression that satellite connections get high pings (problem for first person shooters) and just aren't very reliable.

By the way, I think you might find that you'll have a better chance of finding newer players on standard, vanilla Sins.  The pro community is playing on Diplomacy.

Yep, diplomacy. And unfortunately it's not just a matter of adjusting myself to a higher game speed. The combination of my lag and the game speed meant the game was hiccuping unevenly. My clicks would give a response a variable number seconds later, and the game would skip whole chunks at a time.

The last time I got into multiplayer gaming was with the game Dungeon Keeper 2, if anyone here is old enough to remember it. I eventually got good enough that no one could beat me--unless they put the game on the fastest speed possible. I had a dial-up connection at the time, so that made my end of the game quite unplayable.

Yeah, I live deep in the hills in the middle of nowhere. Cell reception blows and satellite is the only option for TV or internet (unless you count dial-up).

I may not be able to do this game multiplayer. :/

Carbon, your link gives me a 404.

THats because he spelled forums wrong in his link.  I don't know if there are other mistakes in it but that is definitely one.

I'll just throw this offer out there...

I have no problem playing with new players...I'm not a pro by any means but I can give some tips and I'm willing to actually play on normal speed...if you're afraid of playing against a human, there is always the option of playing against the AI...

Hope to see more people on ICO :-)

I have seen substantial positive commenting about this mod while lurking around the forums. So far the only mod I've downloaded is the optimization project. Are they compatible? Star Trek and BSG mods also looked neat but they looked like they still needed a lot of work.

Seleuceia: I'm not willing to give up yet, but if my lag issues are just as bad (and not the result of that day's weather) I might find competitive play too aggravating. Actually I might find any online play too aggravating. We will see. :)
