E:WoM, the Starcraft 2 Beta, Frustration, and it's alleviation...
3:30 AM in my TZ when I'm typing this sentence. (Roughly, anyway.)
I want to talk about life, and how Elemental has factored into my life.
For reference, I'm 20, want to Design Games for a living, love Video Games, and an Insomniac. (That last part's just for explaining what the hell I'm doing up at this hour. =P )
Now, I've spent months, MONTHS, lurking these Forums, waiting for this game... I did finally break down and Pre-Order last week so I could get in on the up-coming Beta Build. I've also spent a month or two watching Live Streams of people playing the Multiplayer Starcraft 2 Beta.....
I'm disappointed...
The 8th Patch of the SC2 Beta came out April 7th. It is the 8th patch in a row that has nerfed Protoss. (I doubt this explanation is needed, but for those who don't know, a 'Nerf' is a detrimental change to a 'Unit,' or a game mechanic involving how the game balances. To be 'Nerfed' is essentially to be weakened.) It's starting to really tick me off. They won't fix what needs to be fixed, and instead, keep doing the same thing that isn't working, (Defined: Idiocy,) and keep making everything worse. Admittedly this last patch did take a single baby step in the right direction, but I've no faith left... That's a sad thing, considering Blizzard is the company, the whole reason, I'm pursuing a career in Game Design...
Now, I used to write articles for a website that brought coverage of the Korean Professional Starcraft: Broodwar League's to Americans and others around the globe. I used to (try) to play SC:BW competitively... When I saw that first teaser trailer from Blizzard, "Damn, it's about time," I nearly browned my shorts.
I play(ed) Zerg.
But let's face it, Blizzard's doing a horrible job. Many people might make the argument that they did fine with Broodwar. They didn't. Blizzard North (BlizzN) did. BlizzN balanced Broodwar, making it even possible for it to be the first 'Real E-Sport.' BlizzN no longer exists. Whether the people from that Branch-Studio were re-integrated into the main Blizzard studio or not, I don't know, but to me, it's obvious they weren't, or they wouldn't stand for this... If they are, then it's because Browder (one of the leads on SC2,) is beating them back with a REALLY big stick. It'd have to be a straight massive stick...
But I didn't make this thread to talk about Starcraft.... Okay, yes I did, but only to whine about it and preface this next part.
For every hour I spend watching people play the SC2 Beta, for every complaint I hear, for every easily fixed problem I see with that game, I die a little inside. I was freakin' 8 years old when Starcraft came out. The first Blizzard game I bought was Diablo back in '96... Meaning I was 6. I've given nearly 3/4's of my life to that company, and hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars... (I have two copies each of Starcraft, SC:Broodwar, and World of WarCrack, and played it for 3 years straight.... And no, that's not a typo.) The only Blizzard games I don't own are 'Warcraft: Orcs VS. Humans (The first one,) and the expansion to Diablo. Blizzard's been going down, down... Downhill... Starting with Diablo 2. (In my opinion, which I will be more than happy to explain.) It's like being a dedicated athlete, and seeing your number one idol become a strung-out junkie right before your very eyes... It's painful.
But I can come to these forums and see something magical happening. I can see a game that doesn't frustrate me, that doesn't kill me inside, and it's no where near as complete as the SC2 Beta claims to be. I can come here and see, actually physically SEE, with my friggen eyeballs, that Stardock does, in fact, play their games, and gives a damn about their community... They care a lot it seems to me.
I love Video Games. I love this community. I love Stardock, and how they approach their business.
So I want to know, what is it about this Beta, Elemental: War of Magic, prior to the new build being released today, that you've loved the most. It doesn't have to be within the game itself, rather, it can be anything dealing with the entire Beta process. What is it about this Beta, community, game, company and all, that you are most pleased with? What is it about this Beta that, for the truly passionate, lifts the weight of life from your shoulders, and for the not-so-truly passionate, that makes you forget about life for a while? What about 1Z do you think you'll love? What will you hate? How would you change those things?
