sdmcp.exe hangs explorer.exe on login

About once a month, if that, sdmcp.exe hangs explorer.exe when I try to log in; the system just stops during login until I bring up task manager and kill sdmcp.exe, then everything proceeds normally.  I found another ticket on this that was over 4 years old; the advice given was to go into Stardock Central and uncheck some options; SDCentral no longer exists, so that's not an option anymore.  What's the best solution now?  Are those optional enough there's no reason to run them most of the time, or is it better to put up with the admittedly rare hangs?  What does sdmcp do?

Running Windows XP SP3 with 2G RAM on a Core2 E6400 with McAfee Enterprise 8.5.0i.

My WinXP Pro SP3 32-bit image has had explorer.exe hang on boot lately as well.  Killing explorer.exe and then running it works as well.

Within the registry...

Failing finding the key in the usual HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, it may be under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify

sdmcp wont let my XP bootup finish loading .It hangs explorer and only killing the sdmcp.exe with the taskmanager will allow the pc to finish booting.

I reinstalled WB but no good, didnt help.

Help please.

This problem has made me angry...not because its a pain to kill it but because I spent 2 days trying a hundred other things before I found it was this! X(

About once a month

I don't even know why that would happen unless you're running 'something' once a month. The file is not Digitally Signed, so it could be your security apps screwing with it.

A more likely cause is the Registry. It should hook on boot. The file is in Common File folder. Open MSCONFIG and un-check MCP. Put a shortcut of the .exe in Common File/Stardock to the Startup folder. Re-boot

If you have still Stardock Central installed on your PC, launch it and look up in "tools" / "settings" / "General". Uncheck the two lines where MCP is mentionned  ;)

It's only for tray support as far as I know and I have no idea what you have installed/running....

Open Services, find it and disable it.

Sorry it took me awhile to get back to you Gary...I'm puny some days.

After a few tries,SDC was able to stop the executable from loading. That means I have lost tray support for WB but oh well...quicklaunch is just as good.

Dosnt tell me what was wrong tho...another Stardock mystery.

Thank you mister.
