 6 8 More Maps for 5v5

(See post #21 for more details about the 4 additional maps--they are now part of the AutoInstaller at TinyURL.com/Sins9.)

I have just finished work on a new map pack containing 6 new maps with six starting position variations for five of the maps making for a pack with a total of 31 maps.  Sorry pirate lovers, these maps don't have pirate bases.  I think that The Mosh Pit, Kaleidoscope, Death~a~Whirl, and Circle of Death are the ones most likely to get played.  Death~a~Whirl might be particularly interesting since it offers a workable multistar map for 5v5 where everyone starts at the same star.

The New Maps

The Mosh Pit: This is probably the best of the bunch and it only has one player starting alignment with each team starting on opposite sides of the star.  Theoretically, anyone on the team could go eco as long as people are properly assigned to fight for certain areas on the map.  The action takes place in the middle though it's difficult to designate any particular planets as choke points since ten planets connect to the star.

Kaleidoscope: This is basically just a huge random single star map that might be a candidate to replace the huge random single star for pugs.  This map does have many planets but the home planets are only separated by three asteroids, so putting effort into colonization can make you vulnerable to attack.  Comes with six starting position variations.

Circle of Death: This is a donut map; it's circular and hollow in the middle.  So, if you need to migrate you're probably fucked.  Comes with six starting position variations.

Death~a~Whirl:  Think Circle of Death but with access to the sun and three (!) bonus mini-star system swirls to jazz it up.  Now you can migrate if you need to.  Who will fight along the circle and who will fight for the bonus systems?  Comes with six starting position variations.

Nowhere to Hide:  This is a donut map that is straight and to the point.  You won't find any ice, volcanic, or desert planets here, just home terrans separated from other home terrans by four roids.  It is completely linear in these regards and might be suitable for locked 10-man FFA.

Buzzsaw:  This is like Nowhere to Hide except home terrans are separated by only three asteroids but everyone gets an ice and a volcanic.

Starting Position Variations:

Random

Staggered -- 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2

Suicide -- 1-1-2-1-1-2-2-1-2-2

Team Together -- 1-1-1-1-1-2-2-2-2-2

2-2-3-3 -- 1-1-2-2-1-1-1-2-2-2

Just downloaded this. I can't wait to play these new maps. :)

I love some of those maps, whereas others I'm not so much a fan of.

Nowhere to Hide just irks me (no offense).  It's too straightforward.  Forget nowhere to hide, there's not even room to maneuver.  You have no choice but a direct assault.  Plus no neutrals.  Circle of Death manages to preserve the same heavy choke point frontal-assault layout as Nowhere, but does so with more breathing space for variety, and the choke is a desert which is a little harder to hold than a roid.  I dislike the outer star systems for Death~a~Whirl, but otherwise I like the map.

The other maps are to die for ;-D

Darvin, could you please make an auto-install for all of those for me?  I could host it at my Filefront site or my new mapping site.

Speaking of new maps, I'm just putting the finishing touches on a 4v4 I've been working on for a while.  I can't say until I've finished/played it, but this map looks like it could be a masterpiece.  We should try to arrange some games over the holiday to play these maps.

Not a fan of wormholes Dirty? Some of those donut systems may benefit from an easier way to get from one end to the other without having to go through a ridiculous amount of systems.

Yeah, not really.  I can't say that I'm a big fan of wormholes.  The idea of the donut maps is that you do have to work your way around the circle and since they are team maps it isn't necessary for a single player to take it all.  (However, I do think that locked 10-man FFA might be viable on Nowhere to Hide.)

Special thanks to Darvin for making an auto-install file for me.  An auto-installer is now available!

We played The Mosh Pit last night.  That map can get a little chokey and defensive apparently (on Entrenchment), but it does make for some interesting team strategies and I think people liked it.

The Auto-Installer is a total game changer.  Get custom maps--in 45 seconds--without closing Sins!  No folders to open, no files to move!

Hey Sanchez , I might make a few maps ..was wondering if you wanted to have a look at them and maybe put a few into your next update.

thinking of four designs , which play on addicted qualities of maps

- MicroBond ( a theory I have about small micro maps being uber addictive - as this phenomena occured when I made this map in Homeworld 2. Everyone till this day just kept on hosting and playing this one map which was just squished and close quarters. Its popularity stems from novelty factor and quickgame factor. People arent scared that tey have to proove themselves on a random map and adapt. Its all quick and fun and just the mindless rush players need

- Painted desert ( the theory of uniform skill and map meanuvring. A map tailored to testing the skill of awarness. A very risky design for a game like sins , but a map with no single focus point , but an even spread of focus.

- Green Fields ( the theory of monotonous map design tailoured to tired minds. Many players come on scared to think or to have to adapt. A monotonous green map with nothing prooved addictively popular in a game caled TA Spring . Its popularity stemming from the fact that you feel comfortable playing it because you dont need to think much and our on your side with your allies.

- Wargots Web ( a map of anti-clockwise and clockwise , in homeworld 2 its called Nebula-V2 . Very popular map tho requires thinking.

Sanchez ill pm u the designs later

I'm going to be making a new version of the community compilation soon, and those are exactly the kinds of maps I'd include.

Good to see you around again P5yy.  Sure, I'll have a look.  I think you should also update your older maps so that they'll work with the newer versions of the game.  Harpo99999 made a map updater program that can run on all of your maps.

Four new maps added Dec 26.

They are included as part of the autoinstaller at http://TinyURL.com/Sins9 and include one new .tga file for Warring Systems.

Warring Systems (5v5):  This is a 5v5 version of the standard 2v2 map Systems of War where the teams fight over a large empty star system filled with planets.  Your goal is to take control of part of that system and establish new home worlds (for a better economy) because there isn't much to colonize on your team's starting system.  This is a three star map with each team starting out on its own crappy solar system.  Also, in order to prevent mass starbasing of the stars, each starting system is connected to the central system by three wormholes (so the central system has 6 wormholes).

Gateway to Paradise 4v4:  This is a 4v4 version of the 3v3 map Gateway to Paradise.  I added extra starting positions, added a 2nd team access point to the ring for each team (instead of having a single ice bottleneck you now have two deserts) and added two extra planets to the second star and two more to the strings of the center terrans (one each).

Gateway to Paradise 4v4 v2:  This is an alternate version for 4v4 that uses the center area from the 5v5.

Gateway to Paradise 5v5:  The center area of this version has been modified to reduce the amount of chokeiness that I anticipate for a 5v5 version of this map so that there are more ways to get across the middle.  The bonus star system is a little larger than the 3v3.

July 30, 2010 Update

I have just released an updated version of the auotinstall pack that fixes the borked Death~a~Whirl maps (they have FIXED at the end of the name).  I also modified The Mosh Pit, removing a few asteroids.  The improved map is The Mosh Pit v2.  I also removed a couple planets from Warring Systems, the new map is Warring Systems v3.

You can get it at:
