Thanks for this one Ed. ![]()
Thank you for pointing us to thsat link. I see my AVG is at the bottom, but you know what...It all depends on our surfing habits. Listen, the possibility of me getting a virus is less by visiting a website like Wincustomize.com than it is visiting xxx.swank.com. Point being, surf safe and you'll be safe, surf the risque' and your chances are 50/50 so live with it...
Personally I don't think this page is an unbaised rating, for some reason. I have read other (3 or 4) that show a complete different story. I think to properly know one should visit as many sites as you can stand, that rate software or Security software in question. They have way to many programs rated "Not Recommended" Like AVG, Avira, Avast. All this is my opinion and I am far from being "the one to go to".
I use Avast, but it is not one of those tested. I have been happy with it, however.
Same here, but this list is for security software, not malware software. I didn't see any anti-virus software in the list.
Nice post Ed but. I have tried many over the years and I think it's what you find that works for you. Take the first one on the list "Comodo Internet Security" and do a review search for it. the results are almost all bad so go figure. Jim most of the Internet packages also include anti-virus such as the one that is on top of the list. I use BitDefender and it's on the Do not Use list. now they did test 2009 and i use 2010 Internet security, but I was always happy with the 2009. So the user, uses what they want and that is the best software for them and this is only my opinion, I'm not an expert.
I apologize. I wasn't specific enough. This mainly deals with firewalls. And I'm sorry to say to w4x: there is no safe surfing. embedded malware are on tons of major legit.sites just waiting for you to click an ad or some of them only need a mouse over.
I have used Online Armor and NOD32, plus A2 as a scanner only for more than 6 years and have had nesx to no problems. The ones I had were my fault.
Np need to apologize Ed. Like I said above it's what works best for the person. I sometimes think that companies pay to get put on top. There are other lists available and some on top of this list are even mentioned on other list, so do like me and don't even try and figure it out. If your puter ain't broke leave it alone. ![]()
And pray others do as well.
I think it's an interesting evaluation. Thanks, Ed!
I've had paid subscriptions to Kaspersky & BitDefender, amoung others, + really, Avast is at par with all of them...(very effective & efficient)....& bonus points, FREE for home users...what MORE could one ask for...(& yeah, top 10 lists ARE relative & one is wise to be cynical & suspect such divergence a la paid ratings as the top recommendations are FAR from universal)....but thx for the food for thought Ed...
And pray others do as well.
I don't have to worry about that doc, but when I did I had a sonic alarm hooked up to it.
I wonder where Scotty lives.
Weird listing.
I wish I were ambitious enough to start an internet security firm in the comfort of my own basement, where I offer paid tests and evaluations to firewall software firms with a proviso that if they pay up and don't like the test results, they can opt to keep them private and unpublished. That matousec guy and his college buddies were pretty sharp. The only thing that would make their operation perfect would be if they published verified, repeatable results using documented testing methodologies.
I currently have both [covers 4 systems]...but in most cases price will be a true indicator of actual worth. You get what you pay for.
Performance and reputation justifies the fee...so 'free' should make you think - twice...;)
I would be interested in seeing a list of Anti Virus apps. I'm sure the free versions such as Avast and AVG are higher in the list then Norton and Mcaffee. There were in a list I saw a few years ago. Norton is horrible.
I use Avast Home Edition and Spybot Search & Destroy with Teatimer with 'real time' protection against unauthorised installations and system immunisation. Combined with Vista's/Win 7's built-in firewall and a hardware firewall in my router, this has worked well for me for 4 - 5 years now... I have been virus/malware free in that time.
Of course it was your own fault... I saw you logged in at xxxbabes.com.

I did think twice! I looked at the 'not free' Norton and McAfee suites and their reputations with many around the world who think they're the bee's knees... and thinked
once about using the free Avast because its performance and reputation were documented as being considerably better than Norton, McAfee and other AV's. So, behind the abovementioned security measures I feel safe and have been infection free since implementing them.... so now I think twice about changing... second time to say no.
That resource hogging, less than effective, damned near impossible to get rid of POS!!! Wouldn't touch it with a 40 foot pole being manipulated by the claws of a Hazmat 'containment' vehicle. ![]()
McAfee isn't much better. Matter of fact when I work on a customer's PC I recommend they get rid of Norton or McAfee ASAP. I can't believe people pay for these programs when all they do is clutter your PC.
(applause)Kona + Starkers...THANK YOU boys for your truly considered opinions....the link provided should illustrate btw the current esteem & worth of 'McAfee'....I won't even BEGIN to eval Norton....
I run Spybot Search and Destroy once a week just to be sure, but it hasn't found any bad items in years... zilch-none, eff all.
Don't need to, Scotty, think I provided an accurate analysis, accentuated by POS![]()
I can't count the number of times while working at Walmart that I saw McAfee AV come across my register to be bought. I told them about Avast and AVG and they saved some money.
I'll bet your boss wasn't too happy, sabotaging sales like that, but hey...

Like I said before, Pat at my local PC store refuses to stock McAfee products. He will order them in if the customer is insistent and pays a deposit, but for the most part he recommends they use Avast. As he said to me, he makes such a little mark-up that it's not worth his while tying up capital to purchase MCAfee products, particularly as they're in such low demand around here.
Don't think he likes Symantec/Norton, either... he just stocks it because local demand is there, but like McAfee, I guess he'd rather not.
Thanks for the link, and looking at the test result I am starting to wonder if I need to change my trusted Zone Alarm Pro with any of those top 3 suggested. Anybody using those top 3 firewall app, could share some good and bad points on those apps? Thanks.

Like a hot rock, used it for a year some time ago (the free version) but had too many issues and changed over when AVG came out.
I run spybot weekly, I use two browsers, IE has first and third party cookie control and FF that does not. yesterday's scan showed 22 tracking cookies all downloaded using firefox. (cookie comment, not a browser comment)
IMHO: If you're using Windows, their firewall protection works just fine.
AVG is upgrading their free version, I know this by the daily nag screen reminding me that the world ends December 1st. I've thought about changing over to Avira or Avast primairly due to the nag but realize that I could be trading for a pig in a poke. I wonder how user friendly and hopefully, less obnoxious these other two programs are. comments welcome.
basj ...I have the Kaspersky 2010 on this machine...[Win 7 Ult 64bit] and it works fine...and painlessly...;)
