So according to these definitions a weapon is anything the human mind can put to use. So therefore any and all of us are threats to others.

Yes it is unfortunate. Man has dominated man to his injury for millennium. But man has done that since the time when we used sticks and stones for weapons. The man with the biggest club was the boss.

Would that really minimize the threat? Or make the issue worse? Example in Mexico. The drug cartels are running rabid with guns that are banned. Why? No one else can truly fight back except the military and police and half of them are corrupt. Do they try to come here? Yes and often promptly get shot at by others (whether gun-toting gang bangers or citizen who are just tired of it all) so they keep quiet and you don't have quite the blood shed going on.
Ironically one of the safest countries in the world is Switzerland where everyone is excepted to own a gun by law and is trained to use it properly. Everyone has a gun and no one wants to mess with one another.
In conclusion guns are not the true issue. Never have been, never will be. To bring an end to violence, humans must be taught not to resort to violence as an answer unless absolutely necessary, as in someone else forgets that violence is a poor answer and needs to be stopped. Nothing else will work.

First, by accepting something as impossible, you have already failed in any hope to accomplish the task.

Second, it's in nature (not human nature) to be violent. There are no creatures which are not capable of violence. Despite the rhetoric of some, animals do kill out of pleasure.

Third, why would you rather be knifed? The most capable serial murderers and string killers in history have used knives, thus proving their effectiveness as greater than a firearm. Your chances are actually equal in survivability, as the location of the injury is more important than the method of injury.

I don't disagree that violence is bad, but I prefer to approach it in the matter that Ryat does.

Well, I've said my piece. I do believe that ones can be taught to strive to practice non-violence. I myself strive to practice non-violence even in video games where if I can do something peaceful I usually go that direction. I have seen others who have come from violent natures to become peaceable. The issue is that some don't want to be peaceable. And taking away their guns solves nothing.

Plus I agree with Draakjacht. Gun wound, knife wound, both are painful, destructive and can be lethal.

I actually know a guy who can put a throwing knife in a 5 inch diameter from probably 20 feet away. Pretty scary shit.

and the simplest way to reduce violence is distance( the larger the less violent, the closer the more violent)
