Yeah, the earliest tanks were put out with the simple purpose of defeating barbed wire and such barriers, while practically eliminating the need for infantry. This worked as long as both sides kept to the Cult of the Offensive. I have to give Hitler (and all the guys around him and which steadily developed the system) points for understanding that warfare would greatly improve with the proper use of tanks (which I feel the quality end still matters) and that infantry would never be in disuse, rather must be trained to compete with such machines (hence part of the reason armor quality had to be improved).

And tesb, you're right. Before Rommel employed them against British tanks in North Africa, he did use them in France where he got to test out the theories laid out in the Spanish Civil War. Forgot about that.

a more fitting term would be invasion by an outside force under a spanish general with the support of the church  (it was the last war the church deemed holy afaik)

hitler himself had little to do with the new tank concepts, most of them were worked out by the generals in particular guderian. hilter was educated in the trenches of ww1 and therefore had more of a defensive infantry mindset.
