a person who lives on a desert or ice planet would definitely be angry at the use of the term "terran" to describe all humans. it would be akin to calling all inhabitants of earth today "americans," just because our economy drives the world

edit: goddamn quotes!

If an American moves to Australia, then they'd still be American. Also, sometimes people refer to their roots or ancestry.

what about his grandchildren? his grandchildren's grandchildren? are they american? i am not polish, despite the fact that my grandmother is from poland

I always thought it was navy, but we'll probably all be proved wrong whenever they tell us. Until then we can make that acronym whatever we want it to be. }:)

Hence the reference to ancestry. The Advent prefer desert worlds because of the history of their ancestors. I am American, but I could just as easily refer to the component ethnicities of my ancestors: French, Irish, English, Scottish, Italian, and so forth. My last name is French, Fournier, so I could most easily give myself the appellation of "French" in a sense if I wanted to. However, the Advent in the game would probably want to associate more with their ancestors which were exiled from their desert planet, rather than associating with the rest of their ancestors who exiled them.

As for the game though, the T in TDN most likely stands for Trader. The suggestion for Terran, or Terrestrial, or even Tellurian, would be more to the effect if the acronym were representative of Latin words, as the words translating from English "trader" do not start with a "T" in Latin.

I was thinking it might all be latin, but then I thought to hell with that idea! Trader Defense Network all the way.

Their specialty is economy, so who knows. Perhaps each capital ship has a broadcast center onboard, and that may be why they deplete enemy culture. Sure beats Picard saying "I am Captain Jean Luc Picard of the United Star Ship Enterprise..." back in one of the shows of the first or second season. It's like, United Star Ship? How lame.

^---- pretty much sums up this thread at this point.

If were gonna break this arguement down to bigger texts.........then I win. but if were going to actually make an arguement for either Navy or Network...........Please lets see some remarks that fit.

TRADER DEFENSE NAVY..........FTW.

Navy is more likely, just due to the whole Battleship, Battlecrusier, Carrier, and even Dreadnaught nomenclature, which are all nautical terms. Though if there's going to be a dispute, how 'bout TDNN, Trader Defense Naval Network.

TDN2!

that would solve all our problems, if there was a second N.

or Trader Nautical Defense Network.

Nah, nautical implies oceans are involved. For that matter, so does navy.

Nautical implies sailing or being related to sailors or their duties. The word nautical comes from Nauta, meaning "sailor".

Like Allegiance86 said, Navy is connotative of ships, not water. Navy is from Navis, the word for "ship" in Latin, as Nauta is "sailor" in Latin.

Usually more to do with Television, but it would be appropriate if the Capital ships had broadcast centers.

The Akkan Battlecrusier does have the networking ability to add range and accuracy to a fleet.

True but Network does not imply anything military minded, it seems "geekish" (yeah I know I am a bit of a geek) while navy or its space equivelant seems more martial, like something design to bring hurt on whatever target it is pointed at.

if Network was used to describe anything in the TEC arsenal it would be their SB's, Hanger Bays, and Defensive Platforms. That would be a network moreso then the actual Fleets.
