[suggestion] use diplomacy to avoid pirate attack

I would like to be able to engage a negotiation with the pirates to avoid having them wreak havoc on my system.

It may be dependent on the presence o a diplomatic vessel on the gravwell, or simply enabled by technology.

If I just want to avoid the fight, I would like to be able to convince the pirates not to attack by either paying credits/metal/crystal, or by giving ships. The amount would be dependent on the size of the raid (of course), and should be cheaper than the target 'damage cost'.

If the deal is completed, a cease fire would be instantly enforced between the affected player and the pirates, so that the pirates can go freely, without retaliation.

That is an interesting idea but I think it would ruin the whole bidding war mechanic.  I mean, after spending all that money to outbid a foe who wants the pirates to attack me, it would really be annoying to have my foe cancel the attack on him by a second round of one-party negotiations.  Why even bid at all? I just think it would make hiring pirates all too uncertain to be worth the money.

Actually, even if there was a peaceful solution, the affected player would still end up paying monetary damages in what they give the pirates for them to not attack.

If I remember correctly, bounty doesn't only go to the pirates, but also can be collected by the player factions, encouraging everyone to attack whatever faction has the highest bounty.  I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think one of the races has research that up the bounty collected.

My idea is that there is a difference between having your stuff destroyed, then rebuilding them (which takes time) and paying the pirates to save your stuff.

Monetary damage is still there, and (unless the bidding mechanics change) if the attacked player has lost the bidding war, odds are he won't have much money in the coffers.

An alternative could be having a 'bribe' button show up on each pirate ship - as long as some 'pirate ties' tech is developed, for them to be more conversational to you. If you click on that button, you will be bribing that pirate ship out of the fight, It should be a mass-activatable skill (i.e. if you select several pirate ships, you should be able to bribe them all at once).

Oh, and the skill should only be useable when pirates are actually raiding, but not when you are attacking their base, for example.

how about bribing a pirate to attack a specific target?its always boring seeing pirates only attack the enemy's border worlds?its more fun if they just ignored the border worlds and jumps to the enemy's capital planet?

How about having the option to "pay off" the pirates with an amount of credits equal or proportional to your bounty?

Well, if this were to be implemented, pirates would have to become a lot stronger.  Currently after the first few raids, pirates are no longer dangerous and are, if anything, a mixed blessing due to the experience they grant your capital ships.  This would need to be changed so it's more than an annoyance and actually a danger to be the victim of a pirate raid.

I personally want to hear what they have in store for pirates.  The current pirates are more like a predictable round of target practice rather than cunning raiders.  I want to see what the new pirates will offer.
