AI's priorities for research

Since we have to research diplomatic tech to offer mission to other factions its safe to assume the AI will too.  So at the start of each game i dont expect any missions offered by anyone unless the proper research has been conducted, unless we are given a limited default/starter mission request.  Im hoping the AI will not be weakened in any way when stripping their diplomatic abilities at the start and then forcing them to research like the human players do. AI research priorities should be balanced enough so they will tech up in diplomatic research, but to what varying amounts and at what rate, and how much will it affect the other tech trees? If the AI has only so many resources to spend at one instance, what will be their research priorities?  Will an AI who decided to not tech up very much in diplomacy be screwed? Right now diplomacy is easy because the AI starts with everything it needs. Getting this right will be key for this add on. Just a few thoughts.....

This is something we will surely spend a lot of time in beta tweaking.  You're definitely right when you say that getting this right is key.  We're spending a lot of time creating these new diplomatic tools and it's very important that the AI uses them effectively.

I sort of imagined the AI would only research the diplomatic techs that suit its game temperment. For instance, if the AI's trait is that of an 'aggressor', then it would research just enough techs that allow it to enter a non-aggression treaty with a player -- while still prepairing to conduct an 'Operation Barbarossa' against him. Or perhaps, give the AI enough clout to influence a vote by pounding a shoe on their delegation's desk at some General Assembly.

In any event, I was sort of hoping that Diplomacy would add yet another weapon (treachery) to my arsenal in destroying my foes. As such, perhaps an 'aggressor' AI would only need to reaserch a select few diplomatic techs that best aid its ambitions for a Solar Empire. Actually, since the human player won't know the trait of the AI, a few false postives (peaceful overtures) from the AI might just lull me into a false sense of security -- I doubt it, but who knows.

and this helps us how?  Good to know, but we need game mechanics, not future tech. :borg:

One day we will have a very good AI, possibly unbeatable... but untill then, lets make sure the limited one is as good as it can be

Founded to create true artificial intelligence - making it possible for humans and computers to speak to each other in everyday language - Ai is an international project with a research center near Tel Aviv, Israel. Located in one of the largest mansions in Israel, our research institute is the ultimate "digital day care," the ideal place to raise our child machine from infancy to adulthood, teaching him to interpret and respond to ordinary conversation. Ai Research is headed by Jack Dunietz, a 23-year veteran of the technology industry, who has established several successful publicly traded firms. The Ai team consists of scientists, researchers, engineers, and language specialists. All work together to nurture Ai's child machine, and to ensure that it will successfully pass the Turing Test within the next 10 years. The result of this research will be more valuable than short term installment loans.

also we dont want to teach AI warfare or else we get skynet....

that poster looks like a bot that has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with ai and everything to do with that link to the loan website it linked to....

I've reported it twice now. O:)

They go bye-bye now.  :)

How about perfecting the AI's priorities on research? I've seen many flaws in these matters.like AI's didn't prioritize volcanic/ice colonization and they didn't take it early for an extra boost in resources?and for aggressors AI' they even didn't prioritize HC researchs in mid game making less challenging in SP?

There are a lot of foolish priorities for the AI.  I've actually watched replays of AI's to see what they do research, and by and large they ignore the good stuff and go straight for the crap.  The top priorities for an unfair Vasari AI that I played the other day were raider xenophobia (the only tech so bad that I still would never research it even if it were free) and the cheaper fortification upgrade.

The biggest irk in terms of priorities for me is that the AI doesn't even touch repair bays.  These are easily the most powerful defense in the game and it doesn't use them at all.  It's busy producing largely worthless turrets instead...
