Multiplayer GalaxyForge Compilation - Third Version Available

As some of you may recall from a recent thread, I've been setting up a compilation of multiplayer GalaxyForge works by multiple authors.  Today, I'm releasing the first version of the compilation, which has 50 works for sampling and discussion.  As I posted originally, the plan is to refine the list down to a small number of popular and suitable multiplayer maps.  I'd like to encourage people to try out some of these maps in multiplayer and discuss the results here so we can make adjustments in future releases.

I intended to have an installer program for the release to deal with some of the nasty install issues.  I hope to have that for the next release. An installer program is now available.

The Third Version is now Available!

Damn some of these maps got slight errors in them! Its a pain clicking skip x 10 :/

the four maps that have errors are

5v5 red crush v03

3v3 ring of risk v03

3v3 gateway to paradise v3

3v3 asteriod belt v3

all of these maps are missing the randomizeStartingPositions FALSE line after isFirstCapitalShipIsFlagship TRUE

All of those are DirtySanchez maps.  I'll leave it up to him to make any necessary changes.  Otherwise I'll exclude any bugged maps from the next release.

What?  They worked for Entrenchment v1.03.  Guess I'll have to look into this.  Those maps aren't supposed to have random starting spots--the players are supposed to start near their allies.  I tried one and it ran fine for me on my rig with v1.04.

dirtysanchezz,

the line randomizeStartingPositions FALSE if true gives the random start position, but when false fixes the players to the position AND IS REQUIRED in the maps, have you played with showerrors TRUE in your settings? this is how I identified the file and line that was missing, and I would expect astex to also use the show errors TRUE otherwise the player does not have to click on any boxes or buttons, but there is a chance that the game could crash

I'm really not that sophisticated; I just create the maps in Galaxy Forge and don't mess around with the text files themselves.

which version of galaxy forge do you use?

in my experience galaxyforge 3 does place the randomizeStartingPositions line usually with TRUE which means that each player can end up at any home planet, but it can also be changed to FALSE so that each player is at one planet only which helps with team planing & layout, but I have found during teseting that true is a good test map balance test, but it does have to be played several times

A bit late, but would Saturday be a good day for a Galaxyforge match? I'd love to play one of these maps for a 2v2, for example. ^_^

Now that the hot-fix is live and there won't be another patch for a while, I'm going to offer 1 karma for replays of multiplayer matches on these maps.  Limit of 1 per customer while supplies last.

ps; I'll definitely be around over the weekend.

I'm on Galaxy Forge 3.  My maps have been successfully played online in Entrenchment v1.03.

just a questions as I'm newb.  If you join a multiplayer game and its a custom map does the map download to the person that does not have it or does the map forcefully have to change to something that everyone has?

Sadly, custom maps--Galaxy Forge-made maps--will not auto-download.  You have to manually install them.  (However, "Map Designer-made maps will auto-download but they normally suck so they are rarely played online.)  This really isn't that big a deal; it's very easy to add custom maps once you've figured out how to do it the first time.  Also, they are tiny little text files and they download quickly.

The installer program means that you don't even need to figure it out for yourself.  Unfortunately, it's still difficult for me to get a galaxyforge game rolling online.  The best I've gotten is a 2v2 a couple of times.  Hopefully we might get a breakthrough one of these days.  Until then, I'll keep trying to host these games every so often and telling people to check out this thread.

I installed manually, as I had more maps that I was working on.  Even without the TGA's they seems to work fine.  I excluded the bugged ones.  I don't play quickstart so if there are quickstart problems on any of my maps just tell me, its easy to fix.  However, while I hoped with Darvin that the patch and 1.181 hotfix would make for some stability in a balanced version of the game, which would allow us to test multiplayer maps, I have been put off by the illuminator bug.  If it's just a one word text bug, what's the issue with having another hotfix?

The discussion on maps that I wanted hasn't really taken off either.  Many of the set maps have no neutral extractors, a major drawback and a reason for a custom pack.  However too many neutrals might also be an issue.  What sort of proportion of planets/asteroids to neutral grav wells with extractors is a balanced one?
