READ BEFORE POSTING - Beta Reporting Guide

Welcome to the Elemental Beta!

If you've beta tested with us before, welcome back. If not, or if you've beta tested other games, please keep in mind that our definition of "beta" is different from others. At this early stage, things are going to be rough and it won't be fun, but with your help and input the game will come together before your very eyes!

So you've found a problem.

First things first: what kind of problem? For the title of your report thread, you'll want to begin with the general category so that particular issues are easier for us to find. Some categories include:

Technical Issues --

[Crash]   The game crashes, hangs, or fails to start.
[Performance]   The game runs poorly, even with sufficient hardware.
[Bug/Graphics]   Graphical anomalies or artifacts.
(ex: the map is just a jumbled mess of lines and static)

Non-technical Issues --

[Bug/Gameplay]   A game mechanic is not working correctly.
(ex: your kingdom's skill bonus does not appear to apply)
[Bug/Interface]   Something in the user interface is not working correctly.
(ex: text or backgrounds are not layered correctly in a menu)
[Bug]   Other not-working-correctly issues outside the above categories.
[Suggestion]   Something you think could be reasonably improved.
(ex: something isn't broken, but could work better or be easier another way)

After figuring out the category, provide a brief but descriptive title. Please refrain from making a post with a mysterious title like "[Bug]" only, or putting an entire post in the title line.

If you have a suggestion which does not involve the game systems that we're focusing on in the current phase, please post them in the Ideas forum rather than under Beta feedback.

Finally, please keep it to one bug per topic. Combining multiple reports into one thread makes it much more difficult to quickly categorize them when we go over them.

What kind of detail should you give?

In the body of the report, please give as much detail about the problem as you can. This includes what the problem is (as best as you can describe it), what you were doing when it happened, and (most importantly) if/how it can be made to happen again.

If it is a technical issue (Crashes, Performance, Graphic Bugs), there are some files you can provide to help. Before we cover them though, take note to use pastebin.com or some other text hosting service (if you have your own website, you can just upload them there) to link any log files externally. These files are usually very long, and if you paste them directly in your post it can become unreadable very quickly. However you upload them, please make sure that the files are readable directly from the link--don't use rapidshare or other such download sites to host them.

Note: If the debug.err file is too large for pastebin, you can split it across multiple pastes or just upload it to dropbox as with memory dumps below.

First and foremost, each time you run the game it will generate a log named debug.err. This file will always be located at My Documents\My Games\Elemental and will be replaced each time you run the game, so make sure to grab it right after the problem happens. Despite the funny extension, it is a plain text file so you can open it with notepad to copy the text out.

Second, also for technical issues, you can provide a dxdiag report. To generate one, go to the Run option in your start menu, type in dxdiag and click OK. It will process for a bit; when it finishes, click the Save All button and save the report someplace you'll remember. You can then open the report with notepad and upload it or post it to pastebin as with the debug.err file. Again, please don't post these directly in your report as they are usually very long.

For crash reports in particular, the most helpful file you can provide is a memory dump that the game will generate when a crash occurs. If you're running Windows XP, there will be a zip file with the memory dump located in Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic. If you're running Windows Vista or 7, the zip file will be located at ProgramData\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic instead.

Due to the high importance of solving crash issues and the need to provide a non-text file, we ask that instead of using third party upload sites or the forums, please submit crash reports with the memory dump zip, your debug.err, and your dxdiag report attached directly to our bug tracking system. Submission of other bugs through that system is optional, but for crashes we do ask that you use it specifically. Although there is a suggestions category there, please keep those to the forums so that it doesn't get too full. There should also be a link to the bug tracker in your start menu should you need to use it.

Update: Unfortunately we've had to close off fogbugz to the general public due to a high volume of spam. For subsequent betas, please post crash reports directly on the forum. For the dumps, we recommend DropBox. Please do not upload dumps to sites such as Rapidshare as the limits on those sites can make gathering large numbers of reports quickly very difficult.

A picture is worth a thousand words...

If you're reporting anything that is most easily illustrated with a picture, we recommend using Jing. This service allows you to post screenshots, annotate them, and host them very easily. For example:

On with the show!

Thanks for reading this guide--now get to playing! If you have any questions about bug reporting or anything is unclear, feel free to ask here.

Is there anything we, as Beta Testers, can/should do towards the end of finding out why Saved Games won't load?  I didn't see anything about that specific issue...

Yep, this is a serious problem still...sometime loading a saved game won't work...in fact I had a save [I've uploaded that one, because it was related to a CTD report], which simply refuses to load. I've tried to reload 5 times in a row...no luck.

Since dump files ain't generated when you kill the game after CTRL-ALT-DEL [saved game failed to load -> Elemental locks up], I think we can only post the debug.err file.

Upload the save in the same manner as you would a dump.

I find where the dump logs are located but when I try to open a program my computer tries to continually open windows and close them immediately.  Is there a specific program I need so I can actually read the report?  I am running windows 7 on a t8100 computer with 3 gigs of memory.

You should be able to open and look at the debug.err file with Notepad or any text editor.  If you're using Dropbox to share the files with the developers, you don't need to open the dump file, just copy it to the Dropbox public folder.  See earlier posts in this thread for details on how to use Dropbox.

Dropbox appears to require email addresses to share with. Which addresses should we use?

I think that's only if you want to share a whole folder in Dropbox.  What I've been doing is just moving files to my Dropbox "Public" folder, then right mouse button on the file (after it gets the green checkmark), select the "Dropbox" option, then "Copy Public Link".  You can then paste that link into a post on these forums.

When I right click on the public folder and go to Dropbox it only gives me the options of Browse on Dropbox website and View deleted files. How do I get the folder link?

Dropbox isn't an option for me since I use it to share some important and heavy stuff between home and work. Pastebin also didn't work quite well, and pastie won't accept more than 100kb for text files. Any ideas?

Just some quickies... 1Z ended? coz mine just crashed out of the blue. Like if I had process explorer kill it. no, I didn't do it, it's just to ilustrate how fast it closed. The last few lines on debug.err seem normal to me:

Debug Message:  - Ending Turn 327-
Debug Message:  Current Memory Usage: 854892 KB
Debug Message:  Cities in World: 6
Debug Message:  Units in World: 73
Debug Message:  SendEvent with UID 1855541630

I'm not entirely clear on what you're asking.  What I meant was that you open the public folder, select a file in it, right click on that file, and then you'll have the option to copy the public link.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I simply cannot find the debug.err file.

(running Vista) I go to \Documents\My Games\Elemental, but I don't see any debug.err files there.

I also can't find the debug.err file even after showing hidden files. Using Win7. Also can't find the memory dump... I really want to help out with this bug reporting, but I'm having a little trouble...

The only problem is that there is no such option. I wish devs will give a better guide... So far i can't upload a crash report. Also, debug.err doesn't exist either.

As I noted on Brad's release announcement, we noticed at the last minute that it was not being generated in the release build (too late to halt the release). It's one of the top things for the next build, but until then you'll need to just post dxdiag reports for technical issues.

Is the link for the Beta 2 download into the Impulse's browser? And, is it only for the pre-order registrations?

Because, I will test rigourously this game at an every weekend rate and, send you so much info, enough to give you a few headaches for a day or so.B)

I see the end of August approaching rather, really rapidly. A read that a lot of players completed the playing of and entire game, already(200+turns).:time:

By already knowing how many turns it took to finish that beta2 game, could you start on forcing the RMG to make much smaller maps? Finishing the game within the range of merely 60 turns and less. If, it is possible onto that stage of game finishing and polishing.;)

Thanks in advance, for reading this post and, replying to it a.s.a.p.

O:)

Drop box does not allow me to "copy Public Link" either..

Do you have a paid account?

I had to sign up for a free account, and I'm not getting that option in the "right click -> Dropbxo" menu.

Can someone from stardock look into this an suggest a free option of public links are only available through a paid Dropbox account.

Public links are available for free dropbox accounts, but the option isn't available until the upload is finished.  Check to make sure the upload is sync'd (it'll have a green checkmark in the lower left corner of the icon).

First post so be gentle :-).

Running Vista 32, updated with all the latest service packs / patches etc, though with old graphics drivers (who the hell installs the most recent ATI drivers anyway????), every time I alt-tab I hit a "DX Error: Invalid Call" error and have to restart the game.

I had a look on the bug tracking site but couldn't find anything directly related to alt-tabbing.  Let me know and I will provide dxdiags / dumps etc.

Cheers,

5cratch

PS.  Best looking Stardock game I've played for a while, I have high hopes for this, it ticks almost all my boxes.  Just need to get it in space ;-).

Debug.err files are back in Beta 2a, at the original location under My Documents\My Games\Elemental.

Please make new threads of your own for bug reports--this is just an instructions/info thread.

That's correct.  I'm using a free account also.

I just preordered the game today and missed the 18th because I didn't know the game existed.  Any place to still DL the beta? Or is it true I'm able to download beta 3 when it comes out?

I think you're too late for phase 2 but will get in in phase 3 (a few weeks probably).

Remember to check Impulse's 'show pre-release versions' option (the upperleft tab) to see Elemental on your games list.

the upload finished but still the only options are browse on the website and view previous versions

Are sure the file you're linking is within the public folder?

I and my colleagues have been using the free version of dropbox and we can confirm that you do not have to pay to get public links.  Paid accounts are just for adding extra storage.

Do you have "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" selected under Tools->Folder Options->View in Windows Explorer?

If you do, and the folder is still not there, then an uninstall and re-install via Impulse should take care of it.
