Some People Can't Be Trusted

Late this afternoon I called in to the office and spoke with one of our dispatchers (mine is on vacation) and requested that a sum of money be transferred to my fuel card. I was pretty much out of cash and needed that money to purchase dinner tonight.

I continued down the road to my planned stop, which I arrived at well after our office had closed. I called the number to check my card balance and found that, despite her assurance that she would transfer the funds, she had failed to put the money on my card.

I had taken her at her word and trusted that she would do as she said and transfer the requested funds. Now I am left without funds and as a result can have no dinner. Needless to say I am less than happy at this point.

A person should follow through on what they say they are going to do. Period.

She will be hearing from me tomorrow monring, but in the meantime I am left hungry and broke. This is unacceptable to me in the extreme. A man who works every day should not be forced to go to bed hungry, especially due to the failure of a co-worker to follow through. There is no excuse for such inattention to one's work.

I will not trust her again and I will be having words with our boss about this incident. I simply can't exuse it. If I have my way she will be looking for a new position come next week. I feel that may well be possible as I have been working for this company several years longer than she.

The problem here is the different relative value of what she was supposed to do.

For her it's just a money transfer that would bother her as much tomorrow as it does today. If she is sufficiently self-focused she wouldn't see what the difference is between now and the next day.

For you, it meant more.

"So you got your money a day later. What's the big deal?" This is what you will hear.

Even if you explain to her, she won't understand. "I couldn't buy dinner because of you" simply doesn't sound like a problem for someone who has never been in such a situation and self-focused people like that girl probably never have been.

Either way, she won't understand what the big deal is. And then she'll go home and have dinner.

Note that that sort of thing probably never happens to her. In my experience the same people (usually women) who work in positions where they are responsible for paying money to other people tend to receive their money from very reliable people one level higher in the company. I have often heard of payroll departments screwing up* but I have never heardof people working in payroll not getting paid in time. And I don't think they understand the problem either.

In general people who get paid on the same day every month don't understand the problems of people who can be victim to not getting paid in time. And it's the same for the dinner issue.

*For example a few months ago payroll moved my payday one week into the future without telling me and I found out Friday afternoon when I had no money in my account.

Sorry to hear this Mason.  This is one of my pet peeves as well.  When a person says something and gives the word I expect it will be done.

My son is dealing with this attitude and is almost on a daily basis firing and hiring 2-3 people because of such attitudes.  The serious hard work ethic and pride in their work is seriously lacking.  I find this unbelieveable especially today with the job market such as it is.  You would think people would be trying to hang onto their jobs.  Instead they whine about how life is unfair to them when they are let go.

If you're ever in my neck of the woods and need a hot homecooked meal.  My door would be open to you.

Thanks. It all worked out in the end, just a skipped meal not the end of the world

Actually she, and the other dispatchers, know full well the importance of these money transfers to drivers out on the road. The money is requested when it's needed and not before.

When I called the that following morning and reminded her of it she apologized immediately and sincerely without making any excuses. She simply got distracted by another problem and forgot about it. As she was honest about her mistake and didn't try to make up excuses I accepted her apology and let the matter drop.
