Messenger Virus

Thought this needed to be brought to everyones attn....There is an email going around thru MSN messenger. It comes to you from contacts on your Messenger contact list. So far I have recieved it from Doc, Jimbo and Reppiks, none of which actually sent it. And I have sent it to several of my contacts even tho I didnt send it. It asks you to see who has blocked you on Messenger and it appears to come from MSN, I assure you it is not! DO NOT OPEN! My McAffee scan didnt find anything, MALWAREBYTES anti malware found three viruses in my registry. Just wanted to hopefully stop this from happening to anyone else!

I can't stress this enough: NEVER enter any kind of account information on sites you open from an email link. It doesn't matter who the mail comes from, or what site you're connecting to. Always open a browser and enter the site address manually if it's a site you have an account on. This is specially important when it comes to banking.

Thanks for posting this, skinhit. I was thinking about doing it. I think it only hit hotmail/windows live. I tried the Windows malware removal tool, but it didn't catch it nor did ESET Online scanner or Avast.

PDJ/RnD sent me Malwarebytes which caught two viral registry items, and zapped 'em.

Incidentally, I didn't see anything published about it on MSN nor the MS Homepage about this 'gem'.

If I inadvertantly spread this to anyone, I apologize.

Except to skinhit. He deserved it.  ;) XD

Really nice to everyone that falls victim to it! You click the link and it takes you to a login... thus you give your msn info to none other than the Chinese. Ya that is right the site and sign in goes to a website in China also linked to other sites such as freeze.com and so forth.

You will get more than a virus from this email. If you signed in at the login screen be sure to change your msn login password before they do.

In other words you just gave them your login for msn.   :borg:

I got the same email from both jimbo and doc too, but I did follow the link, but had enough sense, having been there, done that, to not install anything. I will change my info too.

I haven't loaded messenger on my new PC yet but I received a few suspicious emails at my live e-mail account from a few fellow skinners that do. A few say follow the link to see who has blocked you on messenger.

It seems to be a good thing that I haven't gotten around to loading messenger yet. :P

Lantec i would do a scan with malwarebytes antimalware or some other malware programs as well. AVG is not perfect. I use it myself and there are plenty of viruses that it misses. :)
