That doesn't look like a crucifix on his back...

edit: lol, I figured, Cross+Jesus=Crucifix

Ok, what about this - I can't see the crown of thorns on his head (yeah, I know it's a silhouette, but the crown of thorns was meant to be practically a bush of brambles covering the head, not a ring as most pieces of art depict it)

He carried the cross, yes. Which was likely just the cross beam itself.
