Real Life for most people is usually boring, depressing or frustrating which is why games have become a larger money generator than movies.  Gamers such as myself will play games to provide intellectual challenge while escaping the average boring life.  Sure I have a great loving wife, a dream career, sweet home, good health & shape, enjoy racquetball, fishing vacations.... RPG and TBS games provide an intellectual challenge which is amazing.

Anyways other people choose these crazy lifestyles... because they want to be different, or seek attention, or searching for purpose, or climbing a pedastal to look down on others.  A few actually cross the crazy barrier when they believe they've become a vampire or they've become a god... etc., etc., .  I knew one lady where she and her husband were financially secure for life.... but she returned to working because they didn't know how to spend their time!     Seriously if I was financially secure for life and lived to be 250 years old  I could easily keep myself busy with learning, traveling, growing my family, inventing, and still play a few PC games. 

You know that makes a lot of sense.  If I'm not doing something work-related or playing a game, I spend my time outside exploring and generally being danger-prone and reckless (see: stupid).

I suppose others have their own ways of coping with the relative monotony of life.  When a hobby becomes an obsession, when the line between reality and fantasy becomes blurred, it makes sense that some would engage in behavior otherwise seen as an oddity.

True enough, but what does "messed up" even mean?  What is it to be messed up?  How does one become messed up?

I'm something of a relativist and I do my best to try to understand other people's points of view.  I don't believe that anyone does something without reason.  There is ALWAYS reason, obscured and unconscious though it may be.

I hope you wern't injured by the obviousness and simplicity of the answer. It has destroyed the minds of many stupid people who don't understand that people can be diffrent from them.

The only thing the Internet changed from the past is that now people have an outlet. In the past people who wanted to do this kind of odd stuff couldn't do so in places where they'd be found out, because the community would react badly.

On the net, there's always someone else who enjoys the same thing, and being anonymous shields you from public scorn. It's humanity unchained.

That's fair, but doesn't quite hit the centre mark of the question.  How does it come about?  It's not like there are classes where one learns they enjoy intercourse with the eye sockets of a corpse.

How does one know they enjoy something without trying it, which begs the question "how did the opportunity to try it come about?"

You usualy just feel 'good' 'right' about something thats 'off the beaten track' - the same as everything 'normal', its just that people TELL you that you should feel that way for those things. I have no experince with corpses so I can't tell you anything about that LOL.

Human emotions and psychology might explain why but does it matter WHY? I mean if you know WHY a hot girl plays WoW errr, I mean has fun with watersports does that make it rational and acceptable to you?

I think the funny part is 99% of WoW players are male and the 1% female players probably carry below average beauty.  I'm sure there's a few hot girl playing WoW, but finding one is as likely as finding a gold coin while walking at a nearby park.

I dont want to turn this into a horrible "girls playing games" thread (I've read oh so many of them) but there is a lot more than 1%. The joke is that finding a hot girl that plays wow seems to be fantasy of many of the other guys I met there. (Hint: Its the male dwarves that don't talk that much - those are the hidden women lol). Thus the switch joke with watersports.
