Stardock Products

worth buying?

While I like the customization made available in many Stardock products, they are not things I would pay for.  They allow to make your desktop and Windows in general look very cool, yes, but is it worth that kind of money?  It's putting money into a purely aesthetic thing that only I will see.  It's almost akin to paying $50 extra for the Aero feature on Windows Vista rather than using the 'classic' pre-XP look.

I want to use the Stardock customization products, I really do.  I just can't justify to myself spending that kind of money on it.

Isn't Windowblinds still 20 bucks? Small price for all you get in return.

OK.......you're entitled to your opinion. Since the site has 3.6 million individuals registered you might be in the minority.

That's the decision we have all faced when we first saw what the Stardock products allowed use to do with our individual computer interfaces.  You either make the decision to buy the software or not.

There are a few programs that have free version, like Object Dock.  Have you looked at them?

EDIT:  You have been a member since the end of Apri and your profile shows you as a current customer, hmmm.   What do have?

but is it worth that kind of money?

Absolutely. Once you get into skinnin' you'll agree. Try the free versions for now and find out for yourself.

Lantec - clearly, I am a registered individual on the Stardock system.  Not only is your point invalid, it is false (considering there are considerably more than 3.6 million individuals who do not have a Stardock product), and adds absolutely nothing to any kind of discussion.

Philly - I had the IconPackager trial.  Uploaded an icon set with it, and I've had that icon set ever since the trial expired.  I have not tried a trial on any of the other products - I might look into it.

Kona - I am aware of the prices.  I don't really think $20 bucks is worth what seems to amount to color options on Vista with Blinds (understating it, I know)

"What do have?"?  Erm...Demigod, maybe?

He said the site has 3.6 registered users. They don't have to purchase stuff to register.

You don't think 20 bucks is worth all you get in return? Are you nuts?

Vista with blinds? That's a confusing statement.

Primal Zed ... the two features available with Windowblinds, namely roll-up and Z-order control make it entirely worthwhile, even ignoring any aesthetic advantages [naturaly of which there are many].

There are all sorts of things that won't be seen as 'worth the money' to different people, however the reality of GUI customization popularity shows that there are many who DO see the value of [changing] aesthetics...;)

They allow to make your desktop and Windows in general look very cool

You have missed the fuctionality enhancements...Object Dock, DX, Right Click...etc.

You do appreciate the esthetics, but the SD software offers so much more. You might wish to examine that aspect before forming a final judgement, Primal Zed.

"What do have?"? Erm...Demigod, maybe?

In that case, you have answered your own question, assuming you like the game.To each their own,you chose to spend your money on a game while others may choose to purchase WB's or ODNT. Could it be that is what the Personal part of PC means?

Since neither are needed for the PC to operate,it boils down to what you enjoy using.

Lantec - The fact that there are ~3.6 million registered users is true.  It is false to say that anyone outside of these 3.6 million people is a minority, in light of the fact that again there are far more than 3.6 million people who aren't registered with Stardock.  It is also false in saying that I am not part of the 3.6 million registered users.  Thanks for playing, come back if you actually have a point to make.

Kona - To paraphrase my own statement, "Windows Blinds offers color change options to Windows Vista."  Better?

Jafo, DrJBHL, thank you for your comments.  I will give the products another inspection - I did not realize there were real functional changes (mainly looked at screenshots).  Either way, I will wait til I have Windows 7 (using the free voucher) before making any purchases.

Wizard - liking a game and liking their desktop products can be mutually exclusive.  I am sure there are people that like some of X-Box but not Windows (and vice versa).

Not really. Windowblinds does so much more than just change colors...

Quite right Primal!
Why would I want to spend money on software which might of taken months/years to develop only to change some colors around. On a group of programmers who are prepared to give long turn support for their products. I should not have to pay their wages while they come up with ideas like Fences or Object Dock, are they kidding!
Stuff this, lets teach them a lesson and go out and install Linux.
(Sorry its the Linux fanboy coming out of me)

Microsoft has never seen the value of users being able to customize their workspace. Stardock are just fulfilling a gap in the market where people are prepared to pay for the usage of tools to brighten up windows, so they can have that feel good feeling while using a drab OS. I know some kids who love Windowblinds.

Its not for everyone, if you are happy with your windows look, why change it?

I only have Fences and Object Dock on my Vista OS, because it increases my productivity, if you have not given them a try do so, you wont go back :)

Until Microsoft see the value of customization there will always be a place for this type of software.

Thank you Stardock

Some people just download things illegally. Much easier and cheaper. ;o

I don't condone it at all or suggest it.

Yes, it's true...infact i spend only two months for change the "colors of vista" when i make a skin....:annoyed:  (It's ironic)

It's a.....customising site....

I want to use the Stardock customization products, I really do. I just can't justify to myself spending that kind of money on it.

Well, it comes with loads of extras that you can't put a price on....

~ galleries full of free skins to mix and match

~ then you find out....you can dabble at making your own....

~ then...you download and learn graphics programs...

~ then comes the excitement of uploading your first skin and having it accepted into the gallery

~ then...you come to the forums to ask about said programs...

~ then...you discover an amazing community....that you can be a part of...and grow with...

still...the decision is yours....how good do you want your 'puter to look.....how much do you want to involve yourself.... :)

If no one would by it they would sell it cheaper i think.... The demand dictates the price.

All this talk about new skins is making me think about skinning again. It's been so long...

The very fact that you have to ask this question(when it appears you have already made up your mind)...tells me that you probably are not the kind of customer Stardock is looking for.

When it comes to customizing its usually 'I HAVE to do that!'...there isnt normally any trepidation involved. You either get or dont.

And Lantec was saying you are likely in the minority...here...at wincustomize. You should have easily picked up on that rather than lamely attemting to make him look stupid. :dur:
