Turn off the pirates. and just keep trying, lose a few rounds, try new things.

You could also, take a few rounds without the enemy and just play a game all by yourself, just to learn how to deal with pirates

Have you gone through the tutorials? They kinda suck, but they help give you ideas of how to play the game. Otherwise, do what mooster said and turn of pirates. And i recommend building your first (free, if u didnt no) capital ship as soon as possible, and make it the one with colonizing powers.

Start building better infrastructure on your first few planets ie population; this will increase your income.  Don't overextend yourself too early this will only cost you money since underpopulated planets cost you money.  Defensive structures if well placed can save you lots of ships.  keep your capital ships and their entourage on the front so you are getting the most use out of them.  And if the pirates are such a problem then start bribing them to attack your enemy for a few rounds (not all though since they are a great way to level up your caps).  Really you are only scratching the surface of what this game has to offer.  It would be really ill advised to quit now but if you're looking for a quick game this one really won't be for you since most games even on small maps when you're a beginner will take a while to complete.  Just keep at it cause as a rts fan I really think this is one of the greatest out there.

Play the tutorials if you haven't already.

After that, then follow this advice:

First, make sure the AI is on "easy".  From what I recall, easy doesn't send stuff out very early.  On planets you do colonize, get a repair bay and a few turrets and stick close to those while defending with your fleet (try building all your structures in a tight cluster for easy defense).  It will boost your survival by a large margin.  Remember to upgrade your newly colonized planet's infrastructure otherwise you will take a massive penalty to your credit income.  Your first capital ship is free, if you get a colonizing capital ship, it can generally go out on its own and kill the neutral garrisons and capture planets without any support (just remember to run if the neutrals are overwhelming).  Reasearch your race's "Long range fire" units pretty early: Javelis LRM Frigate (TEC), Illuminator Vessel (Advent), Kanrak Assailant (Vasari) and pump a few of them out.

There's many more advanced strategies I could go into, but if you follow a few of those guidelines, you should be stomping comps in no time. :D

I just picked up the game at retail store and have experienced the same thing: hammered by the pirates!  This is my first look at the internet site (at the office, no home internet).  It appears that the option to turn off pirates was a patch add-on.  Is this the case?  It also looked like one patch dumbed down the AI a bit too?  I already had AI on easy but somehow the pirates must have limitless resorces and top notch ship yards as they appear to be able to crank out was of large fleets quite rapidly.  What is the deal with that?  Does pirate AI start with a ready made fleet and ship yards?

NEED SOME HELP TURNING OFF THE PIRATES, CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT. IM A BIT RETARED WITH MY COMPUTER

The Pirate AI gets X number of ships based on Y amount of money and Z number of orbital buildings

As for a patch that turns off the pirates I am not aware of because I could always turn them off when I start a new game (in game options in senario selection point).

If you wish to get the latest updates, go to www.impulseanywhere.com. This allows you to download the latest patched game on to anything (it will be over a gig) and move to your computer.

When seting up a game, either during the time when you're choosing a map or selecting the difficulty of the Ai, there will be a button near the bottom that says game settings, in it you should have the options to set speeds for different game aspects (ship movement, income rate etc) You should also see a setting for fleet sizes, lock/unlock teams and pirates (active or inactive).

Note* Turning pirates off does not remove them from the map, but will prevent them from raiding your planets, there will still be a Pirate Base that you should avoid without a sizeable and advanced fleet.

Also when first starting, lock teams and give yourself an Ai ally. It'll keep your opponent busy for you and you can get tips and pointers by watching what it does.

Also check for strategies on the forums, there's tons of useful info there.

yeah, before you start a new game, go to game settings and turn off pirates, its not a patch add-on or anything, i played the retail version for about 6 months before i updated and i could always turn offf pirates.

other thing, set enemy AI to easy, maybe play a multi-star map to give you some time to develop at your own place (Derelict is good, thats what i played my first game on... it has 2 stars and a wormhole (i think)... i actually moved a fleet to a planet next door to my home planet, saw the militia there and got scared because i thought it was the enemy (it was a desert planet) so i retreated until i had a much bigger fleet than necessary... haha, loved that first game)

also, set AI behaviour to foritfier or economist, those two are the least dangerous, as they will rarely attack you and, if they are on easy, their fortifications will be easy to break. When playing TEC i always go for an Akkan and 5 Cobalts, then tech up (as in, build sufficient military labs to research LRF) to Javelis frigates. that will usually work for a few planets, but regardless, the more planets you take the more ships you need to defend it.

Lastly, as TEC there are a few things you need to research, when you get two civilian labs. Modular Architecture, Expedited Permits, Volcanic and Arctic Exploitation (two different upgrades) and Orbital Commerce (Trade Ports). You will usually want to research them in this order, though depending on if you have ice or volcanic planets close to your home world, you will want to research those as soon as possible.

Lastly, when you colonise planets, you need to do two things: you have to upgrade the planets infrastructure (the first button top left when you click on planet upgrades) until its maxed or at least until you are breaking even (underdeveloped planets cost you money). The second thing is you have to remember to build extractors at all your planets with resource asteroids, otherwise you wont get resource income. there is a setting in the menu that sets extractors to auto-place (as in, click the button and they will be placed and built automatically), i suggest you enable that, it just saves time.

other than that, just read the info for each piece of research, determine if its worth diverting resources and giving up building another ship, plan well, and never over extend yourself (once for an experiment, i researched alot of fleet supply (the thing that lets you build more ships, which has its own taxes on your income. this is another thing you shouldnt research until its absolutely necessary) and colonised about 4 planets without upgrading infrastructure, i had 700 credits and maybe 300 metal/crystal, and i was actually losing money out of my coffers.) so be careful when you expand.

sometimes, you can expand to a good chokepoint by destroying all militas along the way, but not colonising the planets, move to the chokepoint, colonise that, then work your way backwards at your leisure.

Good Luck!

Apologies if someone mentioned it, but "-" on your keyboard slows down the game in steps, while the "=" key beside it speeds it back up. And Pause key on your keyboard should pause the game.

Like the guys above state, you got to try new things, trial and error is the name of the game, but also just think logically, Having a diverse multi role fleet, early on picking easy targets, capturing and holding bottlenecks. Like real life momentum and initiative are powerful things. Also knowledge is power, Scout as much as you can so there are no nasty surprises.

Also dont forget your first capital ship is free and you can build this from the get go.
