A bit of thanks and a request

I've been meaning to put this up for a while, but I've been a bit busy so haven't really had till now.

Raging Amish, I just wanted to say thanks for keeping me in the match a couple weeks ago. It was obvious that there were more skilled players that you knew better who were begging to get in, so I really appreciate that you let me stay. I also wanted to comment that you appear to be one of the most courteous people I've met in an online game. If you post a reply on this thread, I'll give you some karma.

Likewise, another thanks to both Amish and Derek for your tips on countering LRM in my previous thread. Your advice combined with the knowledge I gained from watching Astax's turtling replay won me a match. The last time I was elected captain of a pug things didn't go so well, so this victory particularly made me happy. I'll post the replay later in case anyone is interested. Likewise, post a reply here and I will + karma.

On a final note, I wasn't able to get a replay out the game that minidumped. I'm still very anxious to see a scout rush pulled off by a skilled player. More + karma to anyone who can post a replay of a good scout rush against a skilled player. Especially if the scout rusher is Raging. I also gathered from the minidump game that Krath is pretty exceptional at the scout rush, so I am also eager to see a good replay where he pulls that tactic.

Lol. You saw Krath do the scout rushing? Man, I'm not surprised. I wonder where he learned it from. ;)

Anyday man. Any day. The quicker a "newb" gets, the better, cause that means there's one more player out there who I'll have on my team anyday of the week. You're a bit inexperienced, but you're actually listening to the vets out there, so you're leaps and bounds ahead of where I was with the amount of time you've played. You're still new, but definitely no newb. You've never been a cobalt spammer, so for that, I am relieved.

Let's just say I may have a "few" replays of the technique *cough, few dozen, cough*, but for the life of me I don't know where to find the game save files nor how to post one. I'll galdly do it. It's just that I'm a simple amishman who doesn't understand these dohicky things called computers.

I wish I had SEEN him scout rush, but I've only heard. In fact, it was that same match. At the end BSC and him were having a an argument and it was clear that Krath had successfully scout rushed him.

I DID encounter it in game the first time the other day though. GrandVeer (aka gugabalog on the foums) successfully pulled off a good timed explosives run on me. I was able to prepare a little ahead of time and minimize some losses, but I wasn't able to counter it effectively. Part of the problem was that by the time my scout had found his hw, he had already amassed around 17 of the little buggers.

I wonder if, as Vasari, I should just tech straight to flak and pump them out. That way I can handle both LRMs and Scouts without too much of a problem. Then just pull out some assailants when I see lfs.

As for posting replays, I can walk you through it if you're willing to give it a shot. Are you using XP or vista?

I've long had an issue with making a fleet of flak. It destroys scouts and long range frigates yes. Basically by being so though that neither has a prayer of beating it. My issue is that you can only aim the front guns. Flak actually do well against Illums because they have "side beams" too, or on flak, ass cannons.

The Vasari flak fires in two ways. In the front, and in the back. The two in the front are linked. The two in teh back are linked. You can only aim the front, so close proximity helps. So do phase missiles. What's sick is 40 flak can take down Capital ships.  They're faster than capital ships, so no cap can get away from them, unlike assailants.

Problem is, flak suck at destroying buildings. You can go straight to flak, but I'd advise mixing in at least some Assailants. You need the DPS they provide. Like, two flak for every assailant wouldn't be bad.

Oh, and get the phase missile techs. Once you max out the fleet on the either the first or second tier of taxation, you should be getting the lvl three phase missiles for 20% bypass. You need it to be effective late game. Plus, it makes any enemy capital ship your bitch.

I'm on Vista. You haven't really seen a scout rush yet. I should mention that scout rushing in my book isn't really supposed to be an offensive technique. The way I use it is I let an opponent build a ton of LRF's first because they always will. Then I let them attack me. I keep a small contingent of scouts for expanding, but once I know an attack is coming my way (position scouts to see what ur enemy is building), I start churning out the scouts for his lrf's. Need two frig factories minimum. Three preforably.

Once I have him on the run, that's when it becomes a scout rush. It's the fleet that I have left over after pushing an enemy back.

Alright, it took a bit of poking around (I have XP), but I found how to do it in Vista:

Step 1: Make Hidden Files viewable:

I copied this directly from http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1521/how_to_view_hidden_and_system_files_and_folders_in_vista/

1. Click the round blue Start thing in the left corner
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Folder Options
4. Click the View tab
5. Click Show hidden files and folders
6. If you want to see system files as well, unclick Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
7. Click OK

Step 2: Open the Sins Data Folder:

Navigate to:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

Where username = your actual user name on the computer. In your case, it might look something like this:

C:\Users\RagingAmish\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

Step 3: Open the Desired Replay Folder:

Within the directory from step 2, there are two different replay folders that you may be interested in: Record-MultiPlayer and AutoRecord-MultiPlayer

The first folder contains any replays you saved as a result of clicking "Record" in the menu while playing a game. Most of the time, I never do this, so this folder doesn't contain many files.

The second folder, AutoRecord-Multiplayer, contains all the replays that the game automatically saves whenever you end a game. This is most likely the one you are looking for, so open this one: AutoRecord-MultiPlayer.

Step 4: Find the Correct Replay

Once you've opened the correct folder, you will find a list of all the replays your game has recorded since the last time you deleted them all (in other words, all the games you've played online if you've never emptied the folder).

You want to sort the files by date, so click on the column heading at the top of the page marked "Date modified." This will sort them by oldest-to-newest, or newest-to-oldest depending on which way the arrow is pointing on the heading. All of the record files should be named according to the day and time you played that game, so just choose the file you want to upload.

What I usually do to make sure I have the correct one, is rename the file and then open up Sins. Go to "Single Player" and "Watch." Then change the save type to "AutoRecord MultiPlayer" and watch the replay you just renamed. If it's not the correct one, choose your next guess and repeat the process.

Step 5: The Next Step

Before I move onto explaining how to upload the file onto a file hosting site, I want to make sure know how to locate the correct file. Let me know if anything was unclear so far so I can clarify.

Once you found the right replay, I can explain how to upload it.
