Regulus Snipe: Lack of interaction undermines multiplayer spirit

Regulus Snipe: Lack of interaction undermines multiplayer spirit

**PLEASE NOTE!  I am not discussing whether Reggie is balanced (he is).  I'm discussing whether Reggie is fun to play against

If you choose to reply to this thread, please answer this question to ensure we stay on topic:  Do you enjoy playing against a Reggie who relies almost exclusively on Snipe/Mines and never engages in direct combat (Shy Reggie)?

----------

I love the idea of Reggie's snipe.  And I love using it.  Very satisfying skill.

But playing against it is miserable, especially if you're playing against 3 of them.

If I'm playing a versus game, I want to interact with my opponent.  If Regulus never comes to the line and fights, I never interact with him.  Fighting a Reggie who just uses snipe is like playing single player with a constant 50ish HP per second drain.

In an effort to encourage Reggie to come out and play, I'd add an additional effect:  2 seconds after being hit with Snipe, you gain back all of the Snipe damage.  Reggie can still kill off fleeing DGs but he can't spend all of his time at the tower never showing his face.

i really hate to play against coward regs. trying to fight with him on a lane is just impossible. hell just hit and run, being unreachable for you, while slowly draining your life. he's a pretty fucked up hero. would be cool if he would've never been taken in to the game. his design is ridiculously gay as well^^ (mr british goodsir on steroids).

Although not really related to this discussion, I have to emphatically agree.  I almost didn't buy the game because I looked at Reg and was worried the entire thing would be a big cheese stick.

Haha! So true!  I would like to see him as a mid range fighter in unreal tournament style rather than like he is now.

Now he is just a mixture of the two most hated characters of dota: A killstealing sniper and a raggequit-creating mine layer.

I feel Snipe should have a starting range just past his regular and increase as points are put into it. Giving him such crazy range right from the start is nuts.

I agree - Snipe is too lame with infinite range.

The game is a big cheese stick. Have you listened to the things the characters say? It's hilarious--and intentionally cheesy. Esp. TB and Reg.

Ya, that's pretty true.  I actually like TB's lines.  Reg?  Not so much.

Nope.

If there is a regulus player on the other team ( and if he is a good one ) always watch
your HP not to be too low so you can get snipe and die.

First: Snipe has not infinite range. But on smaller maps it is from across the whole map (right to left) or from your crystal to the middle.

But in my humble opinion it is even than too lame.

If I can get away with 300 HP and no other demigod can kill me on my way to the crystal then this is fair. Because they had their chance to kill be but I realised the danger and run away early enough.

BUT any Regulus on the enemy team makes the whole tactic of staying alive rediculous: If I get away with 300 HP and no other demigod is able to kill me, regulus is able in 90% of the time. Just snipe - kill. Snipe deals on lvl 1 ~500 damage and can rack up even more with skill points in it. That goes to the point where you need to run even if you have the slightest damage and need to run. So the game is never a measure of skill, tactic and stratregy but only a measure of how quick you run and THAT you run everytime you get a liitle bit more dmg.

Without a Regulus ingame you can risk more, stay longer in the lane , and overall the battles are more thrilling.

And with more than one Ergulus ingame these problems exponentialy increase.

ViViDGear,

When game starts:
- regulus sniping damage is weak.
- I only use snipe helping other demigod kill other demigod by lowering his HP.
- If there is a new player that is not considering regulus sniping and after 1 min playing he has 150
HP trying to fight other demigod, when he'll runaway to the crystal a good regulus will
be aware of that and snipe him.

Middle game:
You should have atleast 1 heal potion (not consider healing equipment that make your HP lot higher to survive) to use, small one is enough so when you are low on HP use it to avoid dying by sniping on your way to the crystal.
 - 4 level sniping is 700HP, far distance sniping is 1000 maybe a little bit more. It's like any other high level demigod skill (TB - fireball, Sedna pounce). So you should consider everything to survive.

OK.  So I've been complaining about how **boring** it is to play against a hypothetical shy Reggie.  The legitimate problem (that many people have noted) is that being a shy Reggie isn't a feasible way to win a game.

I played a couple rounds today with a Shy Reggie build and preformed well.  Team won both times and I got the most favor points at each round.

Shy Reggie build

The big idea

This build leverages Staff of Renewal and mana regen to pump out a constant stream of damage from Snipe and mines.  It uses cost-efficient health gear and Sniper Scope early game to stay out of direct combat.  Mid game, Journeyman's Treads and Wand of Speed are used to stay out of combat.

Unlike the hypothetical Shy Reggie that many envision, he doesn't stay near base.  He goes out and caps flags.  But he doesn't over extend.  If you keep dying, you're overextending. Sometimes, especially against chain stunners, you can't help it.  Shy Reggie loses.  Nobody's perfect!

Feel free to join a 2v1 battle.  But if you see any DG focus on you, turn tail and run.  Don't try to absorb the hits because you'll be ganked.

He likes to stay in the middle to maximize his Snipe coverage, provided he is levelling at pace with everyone else.  Angelic Fury plus Snipe kills/assists are used to level.

He doesn't spend points in Mark of the Betrayer because he can't get close enough to land it and survive.  Same applies to Maim.

Ability progression

  1. Angelic Fury
  2. Sniper Scope
  3. Snipe I
  4. Snipe II
  5. Mines I
  6. Mines II
  7. Snipe III
  8. Mines III
  9. Tracking Device
  10. Snipe IV
  11. Mines IV

Items

Favor:  Staff of Renewal (-20% cooldowns)

Starting:  Scalemail, Banded Armor, Totem of Revelation

Level 3ish:  Vlemish Faceguard

Level 5ish:  Plenor Battlecrown (Spam Snipe and Mines now)

Level 6ish:  Wand of Speed

Level 9ish:  Journeyman's Treads

Our starting theory was that, for death to be a positive experience, players had to feel like they could have avoided dying if they'd done something different. We found two factors that seemed to be important in light of that theory:

  • The first was whether or not you understand what killed you. If you don't know what killed you, that death is failing in providing you the feedback it's supposed to, and you won't be able to figure out what you could have done differently. Unsurprisingly, we saw that these deaths were highly aggravating to players, and in sufficient number caused new players to stop playing entirely. Trying to reduce the number of these deaths in TF2 was done through a variety of changes. It was one of the reasons why we chose to remove the hand-held grenades that each class had in TFC, which were one of the primary causes of these deaths. It was one of several goals that led to the creation of the freezecam.
  • The second was whether you felt you were actually engaged with the person who killed you. Dying to someone you weren't engaged with, especially when you were already engaged with someone else, was aggravating. Even worse was dying to someone who you couldn't have engaged with, even if you chose to. In that case, you're very unlikely to believe you could have done anything differently to survive.

As others mentioned, my stating Snipes' range as infinite was incorrect.  I was mostly pointing out that I agreed with nobalkain that it should be shorter, ramping up with skill points invested would be better.

However, VividGear put it better than I did.  Reg changes the entire game with one level one skill point invested.  It's cool that he has that power, I just think it needs tweaked.

$0.02 from a noob, take it for what you will.
