For Frogboy

Now before I get going, I think your doing a great job keeping us posted on the updates, and what your problems have been and how your trying to fix them.   I also respect you alot for putting up with our complaints and whining etc.   But heres a quote that got me a little angry.

Frogboy said

At least custom games are now largely bullet proof from what I'm seeing and chatting with other people (except, obviously for people who can't connect to anyone).

Ive had the game since Gamestop started selling it 2 days early.  We all had trouble playing the first week,  but I could connect to other people. The 2nd week,  I could host and join games with little trouble.  I never had to fiddle with anything on my D-Link DL-604 router at all up until last week.   After a patch, I started a room and found out I couldnt host anymore.   Unable to connect to Nat provider.  HMMM that sucks.  I know hosting on some games with a router is a no no, so ill just try joining someone elses game.  HMMMMM Unable to connect to nat provider.  Ok so now ill spend a few hours of my life figureing out my router and set up my static IP (THANK YOU MONK) and getting my ports open.  GREAT!! EVERYTHING IS OPEN I CAN PLAY AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or not.

Here are my current woes in the custom game lobby.

Since Friday up until today,  I can host rooms that no longer display the Unable to connect to Nat provider screen.  Doesn't mean anyone can join it.   I can join rooms again.    Of course I  only connect to about 80% of the people.   Which means that in 3v3  i connect to 4 people or 4v4 i connect to about 6 on average.  Sometimes a little higher percentage.  I had a chance to connect to 9 people in a 5v5 today before the 10th person joined and squashed my hopes.  Once he couldnt connect the whole room seemed to crash as about 4 other people simultaniously dropped. But in every 1 out  of 10 tries, I GET IN AN ACTUAL CUSTOM GAME!!! I GET TO PLAY FOR 10 MINUTES AND ITS A GLORIOUS FUNFILLED WONDER!! I LOVE THIS GAME, ILL NEVER STOP PLAYING IT,SOMUCHFUNICANTBELIEVEITSLEGAL!!!!!

Then people start dropping.....               Not rage quiters mind you.  But people who I have had a good time with, and were enjoying the game.    No reason for them to leave.  Just a 30 second delay after say, they make a good kill.   Someone congratulates them.   Then the game pauses...........30 seconds.......they are gone.   That sucks.    You guys gona stay?  I ask.  Yes they say.  They want the favor points.   Well I suppose 3v2 is better than no game at all.    2 Minutes later.............. It pauses again........This time the team that still had 3 people on it (My team)  looses 2 memebers.  Maybe the game itself was trying to balance out the one guy dropping on the other team and just miscounted.   I ask if anyone is still in game.  The other team responds.   I tell them im going to leave too......but i only get halfway thru the message when they inform me of the same idea.  Weeee   theres 3  hours of fun down the poop shoot.  Thats counting the trying to start 20 different games, waiting, crashing, getting booted, not connecting etc....  I talk to some people in the rooms as we wait for a game and ask if they have the same problems i do.  Guess what the majority or so have very similar problems.  Im not sure who you were talking to Frogboy, but my results doen't match yours.

My friends keep asking me how I like this game, and if they should buy it as I spend so much time with it.   Heh, I keep telling  I LOVE the game.  Just dont buy it yet cuz its still to buggy.  So, if any of you are still reading my rant,  PLEASE PLEASE, help me show Frogboy how UNBULLET proof this custom lobby is yet.  I've paid 40 bucks for a game THAT IS BROKEN!!!  As have the rest of you, some of you more.   So all you have to do is reply to this rant(SORRY ABOUT THE LENGTH)   and say DITTO or ME TOO or whatever to let them know they are NOT done with the custom lobby yet.                       Berg

Yesterday I posted this:

http://forums.demigodthegame.com/352771

for more or less the same reasons as you have created this thread.

One thing you should keep in mind though is that connectivity problems in matchmaking and connectivity problems with people dropping after a game starts are not the same issue.  They're not even being handled by the same dev teams.  Matchmaking and lobby problems are for Stardock to fix.  People dropping and lag issues once the game is going is being addressed by GPG itself.

AHHH Thanks for that info.    I mostly  just needed to vent.  Frustrated is all.

ok from what i read which is about 3/4's  your pissed because people drop

then it has something to do with one off these

your  computer can't sim  fast enough  to keep up with the other people  causeing them to   get droped

your  internet  is too unstable to  hold the connection at a steady rate  causing  lag spikes in the  game and they just got pissed off and left

your router if you have one is causing problems  making the connections less stable and causes them to crash

and yes you can cause someone to crash out tioff game it has happened to me a few times

Don't act like you know the cause of people dropping when you don't.

The "reasons" you listed are the same reason that people might drop in any higher end online game (except the simspeed drop, which I think you fabricated entirely). So there should be a similar amount of drops in this game as in other online games. There more unreliability here. Obviously there's something wrong

My bet is p2p architecture rearing its head again. Exponential connections mean exponential increase in problems, which means that DG CANNOT be as reliable of a game as client/server games (which most rts's are, even if the "server" role is played by a peer).

Nearly all RTSs are P2P, not C/S.  The host does not route the traffic.

sythion  sim speed is simulating  aka  howquickly your computer procresses the chances and   it does get droped

Up until last week, i had no problems with hosting,  connecting,  people dropping for no reason.  I dont understand how a problem I DIDNT have before the patches is my fault now.    If I was playing in 5v5 games all the way to the end with no one dropping 2 weeks ago,  I dont see how my router ,internet or computer not simming people is causing me these problems now.  My problems started the MOMENT i downloaded the 5-14-09 patch.

You definitely are garble!

http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/garble.htm

Seriously though, I don't think simspeed attributes to people dropping, just severe choppiness for anyone but the person with low simspeed.

Also, even if it did make people drop, it would be just as likely to happen in any other game with similar system specs.

I was under the impression that there was no need to route traffic in C/S. Doesn't the host have the game state, and simply updates game state from data sent from clients, then send it back?

Simspeed makes the game slow down, not get choppy...

Well perhaps it was a combination of the two

sim speed slows the game but if rthe game gets slowed below a certain point that player is droped so the sim speed can  go back up

it is like haveing 9 people who can run  14 miles in 15 mins  and the 10th guy can only run 4 miles in 15 mins  the other people whill have to slow down but if he got even slower  \then he would stop   and be left behind

This may be the worst analogy I've ever heard. It makes no sense. Why would the runner stop if he was running slower than 4 miles in 15 minutes? Also, people can't even run 14 miles in 15 minutes. That's 56 miles per hour.

Likewise, why would a person get dropped so the simspeed can go up? I've played plenty of games where someone at 0 or -1 simspeed made it through the entire game. Everyone else's play was stuttering, because we all had to play to his simspeed.

no its not

Yes it is! Running slower than 16 miles per hour does not make someone stop.

True. It's not relevent to the OP really anyway. I just can't help myself sometimes. Sigh.

if a runner who can run 16 in a min   running 4 in a min wouldn'ty get tierd while the person who can run 4 in a min would   so

the 4 in a min would  stop  because he is too tierd to continued   the people get droped because the computer can't  keep up if u think that doesn't matter then your a moron

Talk about owned. I was gonna say something but you made it unnecessary.

Anyways, the same thing happens to me on skirmish. Mid-game people get disconnected from each other for no reason. Then I get stuck against the AI, who can hardly even walk properly, let alone fight.

The game is synchronous, IE it sync's game states with every other machine.  That means that everyone runs as slow as the the slowest machine in the game, not "run away ahead" of the slow machine.  SimSpeed is a measurement of just how fast given machine can process the game states as the game stands at that moment and not a measure of how far behind a given machine is.  A low SimSpeed doesn't "lag" you out of the game as you're not behind anyways - just setting the maximum pace.  What it does do is cause the game to slow for everyone involved, which while annoying, is not the same thing and does not cause a player to drop out involuntarily.

And no, a computer does not get tired.  It continues doing what it is told until it is told to stop or there is a catastrophic failure.  Catastrophic failures do not happen unless the instructions (software) are unclear or erroneously written.  Overheating is a physical failure and is not the same thing as getting tired/running out of gas.  If you really want to stick to the flawed analogy I was replying to in the first place it would be more like a runner breaking a leg rather than tiring out.

But by all means, if a discussion of the matter here revolves around inaccurate analogies and tossing out insults when someone points out the obvious flaw then by all means continue...
