Winamp works too if you have something other than an iPod. WINAMP

Most of the media players are free or have a free version and many include the ability to connect to music services and download files as well as upload to your mp3 player.

Check HERE for a comparison guide for Media Players.

I have never downloaded a music files using media players. Just play using them. I would download them or any file using FlashGet. I record streaming music using jet audio but I don't record. Its not good quality.

Its good to have fewer media player than having plenty of them. Jet audio or Vlc media players are the best for me as they play almost anything. Another good one is Zoom Player. See  the editor ratings at cnet and no of formats they can play before downloading.

My HP came with Rhapsody, which is free. You get 25 free songs to play each month.but not download. There are many freeware programs around that will let you record them anyway. You will need to enable stereo mix in your recording devices(it's disabled by default) by right clicking the systray volume icon and selecting "Recording Devices" Then R-click on the window that opens and select "Show Disabled Devices" to enable it. This will allow you to record directly off of your soundcard.

The quality will depend on your card and the program you use to record with. I've used this  LINK (not pretty but works ok) Audacity is also rated highly but I haven't tried it.
