Windows would be secure and work one helluva lot better than it does.

Umm, no disrespect to Jorge, he's definetely doing a helluva job, but... I REALLY doubt that. Coding OS security is way different from coding fancy docks and eyecandy. It takes ALOT of time and effort even for the most experienced coders to get enough knowledge in OS security to actually be able to provide something useful into the area. Most never bother, because it's insanely boring. Also, the true experts in computer security have nothing to do with public relations and support, because they've got their heads buried too deep in networking stacks to be even remotely understandable without 4 years of networking classes. Trust me, I've met the guys...

Don't pay any money for this kind of stuff. Even if some think you should.

I assume then that you don't pay money for candy, fast food, cars, bus tickets, washing machines, TVs, computers or anything else that only is about convenience and/or personal enjoyment... Otherwise, let me decide what I put my money on.

Trust you? No way I'll ever trust someone who looks like this, mate!  XD

Good answer above, Mick! Same from me....in fact, I'm gonna renew today even though my subs up in December.

Thats some pretty bad advice.

Installing freeware puts your system at risk. Oh it might work fine now but in the future you will install something and that's when you could regret it. You will get no support and in many many cases people end up having to reformat their system.

It's not all bad, just risky. With paid software you get support and the assurance that it won't mess up your system.

I looked at the winstep and the nexus dock. Your just trying to sell something.

Of course I am. Just like you (unless you're a kid still being supported by your parents, of course) I need money to make a living.

But you're also wrong, because, unlike the way you make it sound like, the goal is not to sell something. That's just the means, the goal is for me to be able to keep on doing what really I love to do. And because other people also benefit from it, it's a win-win situation. :)

The dock is redundant in my opinion. If your surfing on the net, it's stuck behind the browser and your working off your own taskbar. Unless it's on top of the browser and then it's just in the way.

You obviously didn't work with it for very long, did you? And you didn't bother reading the very detailed user guide either, right? Not only can you make it auto-hide, as all you need to do is bump the scren edge the dock is attached to to bring it forward - and because that target is virtually impossible to miss, you can bring the dock up in a fraction of a second.

As for Winstep. It looks like it changes the start menu but not the task bar. It looks pretty cheezy to me..

Doesn't change the task bar?!

Ok, now I'm certain that whatever you tried (if you actually did try something), it wasn't Winstep Xtreme for sure.

I like the fact that I can change my entire theme to look exactly like windows seven and it runs great. I don't know why anyone would pay money for this stuff your peddling.

Possibly because, unlike you, they actually did try Winstep Xtreme and saw how it could benefit them, and because they're honest people who think the hard work of others should be rewarded. They also know that as long as I can make a living out of this, I'll keep on churning new updates which also benefit them - unlike what happens with everything 'free', which always gets abandoned, for one reason or another, sooner rather than later (none of the free docks out there are currently in active development, except ObjectDock, of course, which, like Nexus, is backed up by a commercial company).

There's a reason why Winstep has been churning out new applications/updates for the past 10 years and, God willing, will keep on doing so for many more years.

Yeh you guys just want people too pay for inferior themes. M$ was what someone else wrote. Kind of hypocritical in my opinion. Thats ok keep paying for it lol. My pictures on the first page of this thread prove the point.

I like it alot, it's really nice. I also decided to take the plunge and get myself the whole winstep suite. So prepare for a bunch of suggestions on improvements. As for now, it's mainly small things, but it's the details that makes the masterpiece.

Thanks Mickeko!

And please bring those suggestions forward, listening to constructive criticism and suggestions from its users is the heart and soul of Winstep.

This said, you might want to hold any suggestions related to the current Winstep Xtreme UI until the next release (coming out sometime around the end of this month). :)

100% agreed.

Wow, BCC, why so harsh? I downloaded what it told me to, read the tutorial, looked for what it told me to, couldn't find anything and ended up uninstalling everything.

A HUGE waste of my time. BUT....I have seen what is possible with this so I know it could've been really cool. I just don't get it.  If that's what happened to you [and it sounds like it, based on both Jc's and your comments], why ya' feel the need to take it out on the developers and people who actually enjoy the program?  Move on.....there are always other options available to you. Life's too short to be an azz for no reason,BCC  :-)   I'd include a link for themes that are very easy to install but you probably wouldn't like it, anyway ;-)

Hey Anjilynn, thanks for being the voice of reason. :)

One question: I assume you are talking about either Nexus or Winstep Xtreme, so what do you mean by 'couldn't find anything'?

Bud...I think you're confused. You can't be thinking/writing about Winstep...or you're trying to pull everyone's chain. If not...well, try the 250,000 mg. chill pill.

Anyway, the whole Winstep Xtreme suite should be featuring this UI (and the same level of simplicity) just before the end of the month - I've been activelly working on it even as I prepared the 9.5 version (which is out since the begining of June but still features the old UI) for release.

Because of this, and ONLY until then, if you click on the Winstep Xtreme link in the About tab of Nexus Preferences you get a nice 50% off promotion.

So, if you want to put your hands on Winstep Xtreme for only $19.95 (and still get the same cool Nexus-style UI before the end of the month), now is your chance!!!

Thanks for the info, JcRabbit, I just placed my order at the incredible price of $19.95!!! To do that I went to the link you provided, downloaded the Nexus free version. Installed it then right-clicked on the Nexus icon on the dock, clicked on preferences, went to the 'About' tab and at the bottom clicked on 'Click here to learn more about Winstep Extreme'. It took me to the Winstep website and at the top there is an ad to click on that says 'Limited time offer, 50% off Winstep Extreme - only $19.95'. Clicked on that and followed the easy instructions and placed my order. Thanks again!

My order was processed in about an hour - very painless process!

np, J - It is completely not your fault that some of us can't make things that seem simple to other people work for us :) I can make a mean Martini but dpi, skin, bitmap, etc all make me say 'huh?!'

Your ?.....

I don't know what Nexus is [plz don't tell me, I am NOT going to Google anymore today!!]

I get themes from Any Color - very simple & straightforward, even for an oldie like me :)

I think this site/program is something WAYYYYY bigger than what I was looking for!!  it told me I had to download * ummmm* an 'I' program & install it so I did but the tutorial here said to find a tab 'look & feel' maybe.........didn't exist, was just some commercial-like pages to buy stuff......lol, you get it...I just don't understand what to do but I got it all uninstalled now and am glad I tried. At least now I will appreciate the themes I have more!!!

Anyhooooo, I was just wandering around to see if there was a simple solution to my lack of understanding before I hit the uninstall button & happened on BCC's post.  Just from what I saw when I was looking through the pages was enough to know that he is talking out of something other than knoweledge.   It is all  beyond me but I think there is some very cool stuff here - keep up the good work!!   Anji

eta: duhhhh, I just realized - I use a Firefox add-on and can modify those with my own pics and colors...I just got to wandering while looking for cursors. duhhh, me

Actually, it doesn't.

The whole point with windowblinds is that you don't need to be a computer wizard to make your own theme. That explains why not all skins are "top notch". Anyone with a slight knowledge can put together a skin. That can certainly not be said about glazz hack styles, which is why we don't see as much of the less perfect skins, it's just not worth the effort of trying to make one if you can't do it right.

Also, pretty much ALL skinners who do styles for glazz hacked computers has started out with windowblinds to learn how to make a good looking usable UI.

If you're too cheap to pay for someones effort, by all means, keep using glazz styles, they're there for you.

I'll use windowblinds, because I can easily change things I don't like with nearly all skins easily. I have the choice of installing pretty much any imaginable kind of theme on my computer. Sometimes I install a butt ugly skin to annoy my friends, sometimes it's something funny and sometimes it's holiday related... You don't have that choice.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if you run some pirate version of windowblinds to be able to use some of the awesome stuff available, and then sit here blabbering on about how much better the free world is... And if that's not being hypocritical, then nothing is.

There's a whole lot more to winstep and object desktop than just the basic skinning too. Your argument has as much valid points as saying "why use Excel when there are free office suites out there"... It just shows that you know NOTHING about the products in question.

Hear, hear!

The problem with most of those in the 'free' crowd is that they seem to think the world owes them something, but NOT ONE OF THEM would ever work for free. We all need to eat, after all.

All very vocal, all full of 'I wants', and always trying to avoid responsability for their role in the world.

People, free things are a GIFT. They are not your God given right, so stop acting like if they were.

Short-cut keys.  This is actually a great addition to any desktop.  Even if you already use ObjectDock.  Really.  They work great together.

The Nexus dock discussed above is FREE!!  Just try it.  You'll like it.

I use both- 'Windows Blinds' as well custom WindowsVisual Styles but can surely say that WindowsBlinds has much more to offer.

you can check it out yourself at my screenshots gallery.
